The socialism is coming from inside the MAGA.

I no longer believe the right when it speaks against "socialism." I have come to understand that the right does not actually mean that they hate "socialism" just a certain kind of socialism that takes care of poor mothers and children. The type of socialism that takes care of rich grifters is still on the menu.

The left loves socialism. The right loves socialism. I am the last man left in America that still hates socialism.

“Of course, I want people to have health care,” Vinson [Obama supporter] said. “I just didn’t realize I would be the one who was going to pay for it personally.”

Lather, rinse, repeat. Socialists never learn.

It turns out Mamdani is not as popular as Adams or de Blasio were at this point. Which surprises me. I thought he would be our gateway drug to socialism. That doesn’t seem to be happening and I’m not so sure these grocery stores are going to be as successful as these two gentlemen think.
(With everyone injecting botox nowadays, that one guy’s forehead was too painful? annoying? strange? to watch.)

Mason G বলেছেন...

"and I’m not so sure these grocery stores are going to be as successful as these two gentlemen think."

Those who are able to buy stuff there (before the shelves are emptied) that other people will be forced to help pay for won't be complaining.

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

Yeah, the early days of Communism are always exciting. Free healthcare! Free housing! Free food! And then, once you are on the government tit, good luck getting off of it. And as your society crumbles and the bills aren't paid, that's when bankruptcy comes around.

If private corporations tried to do this, it would be illegal. It is illegal for private corporations to do this. You can't flood a market with underpriced goods to drive your competitors into bankruptcy. These people are demonic.

Aldi's keeps prices low, but they don't have to worry about massive shop lifting.

Convenience stores generally have higher prices than supermarkets, and it costs money to ship things into Manhattan (tolls and taxes and such, not to mention shoplifting). I'm wondering if 1) Mamdani isn't using bodega prices rather than supermarket prices as the standard, and 2) if he's planning to cut the government owned stores a deal on property taxes and such.

Mason G বলেছেন...

"And then, once you are on the government tit, good luck getting off of it."

Good luck getting what you were promised when you signed up for that "warmth of socialism".

Sooner or later we're going to have another Democrat in the White House. And the more Socialist she is, the more our country is in serious trouble.

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

The USA has always been a very moderate country, economically. And a very successful country, economically.

The media has been portraying Trump as an extreme right-winger, which is ridiculous. "He's a Nazi, he's a fascist." Utterly absurd propaganda. But it's had the effect of pushing his opponents farther and farther to the left.

So our economy might be facing some brutal shocks in the future. When people destroy their own economy, they always run here. But if the left successfully destroys this economy? Where do we run?

This will come down to how much someone's time is worth. New Yorkers are already willing to stand in line for an hour for the latest taco shop or viral ice cream treat. It's not hard to imagine three-hour lines for this discount food store. Once they get in, they'll be tempted to buy much more than they need just to make it worth the wait. Will the 30% savings offset the time they've wasted? That depends on their earning potential. College students and others with copious amounts of free time will probably be the best customers --- and also the ones most likely to proclaim that this is the best way to run the economy.

It isn't a shock that Mamdani has no fucking clue how hard it is to run a grocery store.

He is a retard and so is everyone that votes for him.

And his entire administration in New York is run by fucking idiots who have no idea how anything works.

They will buy stuff for people to steal from their stores. Nobody who actually pays for anything will use them.. New York is going to fall apart very fast.

Mamdani was elected by Illegal immigrants. The SAVE act ends any chance of someone like him getting elected even in New York City.

Great grocery stores have always succeeded because of "loss leaders." Theses stores are just. Loss leaders for socialism. Of course they will succeed in their mission.

RCOCEAN II বলেছেন...

How stupid are Americans? Do you live in NYC? I don't. But lots of people all over the USA are in hysterics over "Them thar commies in Noo Yowk".

The public grocery stores will work or they wont. If they provide security and prevent shop lifting they probably will. Otherwise, not.

BTW, Co-op grocery stores are all around the country. And they work. Those damn commies.

RCOCEAN II বলেছেন...

Nothing will get boobish 'muricans to criticize out of control captialism. Even if its monopoly capitalism. Why all them thar billionaries and hedge fund managers are our friends. We'd all starve without their brilliance. LOL.

The Europeans are a little smarter. For example when FIFA tried to sell 20 percent of the world cup to Kushner and private investment firm for billions, the european clubs said hell no. Soccer is about the game not about making $$ they said.

In this country sport is just a plaything of the rich, and they make us pay through the nose to watch it. Or see a million commercials. And 'muricans like it like that.

RCOCEAN II বলেছেন...

The stupidity just goes on and on. Hey, give Amnesty to illegals and invite in 50 millions Zulus, why that's great. Think of the cheap labor! Of wait, once they get here they go on welfare and vote for people like Mandigo in NYC. Whoopsie!

Dave Begley বলেছেন...

Then why did the socialist grocery store in Kansas City fail?

Mason G বলেছেন...

"Even if its monopoly capitalism."

Monopoly capitalism? In the grocery business? You're not really paying attention, are you?

A quick internet search:

"Grocery stores typically have among the lowest profit margins. Large supermarket chains frequently earn around 1–2% net profit, meaning they might make only $1–2 in profit for every $100 in sales."

Maybe they're not doing "monopoly" right?

bagoh20 বলেছেন...

The self-exposing thing about the government groceries and other socialist plans is that they intend to outcompete their private competitors by avoiding the cost of government for the government players. That should tell you something about big government and the people who sell it to you. Even they know it's the problem.

bagoh20 বলেছেন...

I want some of what he's smoking. I need to escape reality now and them.

bagoh20 বলেছেন...

If what he's saying is true, why hasn't this happen already everywhere it was tried? Where are the success stories? Is this supposed to be a brand new idea that nobody ever tried before?
Maybe they can bring back lobotomies and bloodletting too. It just needs an injection of excitement and discount pricing.

Elizabeth Warren stopped the Albertsons Safeway merger - which would have strengthened the business. Now stores are closing. & Now more people are losing jobs at those two companies... and more food deserts are created. Win win! for Commies.

The potemkin grocery stores will work as propaganda. But the overwhelming majority of the seven million people who live in NYC will not get the benefit of these model stores and will suffer the burden of their local stores being run out of town (along with everything that Mamdami doesn't declare to be "free" being taxed to the hilt). Will the propaganda overcome the reality? Is New York California? We shall see, I suppose.
Also--won't most rational New Yorkers (yeah, I know...) take full advantage of the 30 percent discounts to buy that stuff there, and go elsewhere for the rest?

I think the commenter has a good point. People are imagining that the Mamdani Marts are going to be run in competition to regular markets. I'm thinking they won't be. Regular markets are low-margin businesses that have to work hard to break even, and a lot of their material is ultra perishable. It can't stay on the shelf long. And if shoplifting or other losses are bad, they won't have the cash flow to continue. Even big chains struggle with this.

But the Mamdani Marts aren't going to have that problem, are they? They're going to be run as a line item in a fat budget. They're going to be able to absorb huge losses, whether from spoilage, bad management, theft, whatever. All they have to do to make a success story is to keep the shelves stocked. That's it. They' treat it like a film set, like a promotional campaign, because that's exactly what it is. I could easily imagine fully stocked shelves, gleaming aisles, happy freeloaders, and that grinning jihadi, announcing success. Because it's all about promotion, not provision. And there is no profit motive, because the cost is irrelevant.

We'll see

At every chain grocery store in America the shelves are stocked with multiple brands and quality levels competing tooth and nail. I bought some pasta today at one of the 6 or 7 competing grocery chains in my town of approximately 20,000 people; there were no less than 10 different brands in multiple varieties ranging from basic and cheap $.79 a pound to "air dried bronze drawn" stuff at $4.50.* That is just an example; every product has a similar profile.
How is Mamdani going to duplicate that? He's not. Those fully stocked shelves will be stocked with whatever brands come out on top of the graft olympics--you will buy it and you will like it! It won't happen overnight, but the show stores will go to shit pretty quickly.
*I bought the "bronze drawn" stuff on a 2 for one sale. Spending an extra $2 for really good pasta makes a huge difference and it's still a cheap meal.

If there were ever a case in which "public grocery stores" resulted in lower prices and even similar quality to privately owned stores, I'd be a lot more inclined to credit this comment. Add to that the disinclination of those who support "public grocery stores" to prosecute shoplifting, and I think the die is cast.

I read an interesting article about the closure of that store. At the beginning of the article one of the employees noted how pure of heart everyone was because they weren't pursuing a profit. Later someone noted that "nobody really cares" about keeping the store clean or the shelves stocked. Those are two different ways of saying the same thing.
