"Today, the Board of Peace reached a HISTORIC agreement for the COMPLETE DISARMAMENT of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza."

"This is a monumental step toward lasting PEACE and SECURITY. This agreement is a critical step towards Gaza finally being governed by a new Palestinian government that will work closely with the Board of Peace to help the Palestinian people. At the same time, Israel will have the security it deserves, with Gaza no longer used as a base for terror attacks."

"This is a major milestone in the implementation of the Trump 20-Point Plan. The agreement will be carried out in carefully structured phases. As disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw, and the International Stabilization Force will work with a new Palestinian police force to take responsibility for Gaza being safe for its residents and its neighbors. One year ago there was a violent raging war, humanitarian crisis and hostages kept in brutal captivity. We have made historic progress and there is still much work to do.... Under this agreement, Gaza will finally be in the hands of a new Palestinian government that serves its PEOPLE. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL ON THIS AMAZING DEVELOPMENT, THAT EVERYBODY SAID COULD NEVER BE ACHIEVED!"

Here's the NYT coverage of the story: "Trump Claims Deal Is Reached to Disarm Hamas in Gaza" (gift link).

Hope springs eternal! And I'm not being ironical - it's kind of a cornerstone of not just Trump's but US foreign policy, ISTM, realpolitik and all. Sometimes it works, more or less, like the Begin-Sadat summit, and the Abraham Accords. But the Middle East is a friggin' tough nut.

Wouldn't it be great, though, if the "Palestinians" really did only want peace and prosperity?

The United States Institute for Peace was established in Washington DC in 1984. The building headquarters were completed in 2011. The Board of Peace for Gaza is also HQed in the USIP.

Trump keeps finding these entities Congress created that have been dormant or repurposed. That’s a fascinating angle to Trump 47. The recent first hearing in the Alien Terrorist Removal Court that has been fully staffed for 30 years but never used until last week is another of those.

Trump has a businessman’s faith in term sheets and MOUs. Lawyers know that “the devil is in the details” is more than a cute phrase. But unlike the media, I am hoping for the best.

These announcements just seem to be invitations to whomever out there hates Trump or the US or Israel enough to commit acts of terrorism in the name of Gaza, preferably near Gaza, so a claim can be made of no deal.

LOL.

These people are just enemies of the United States and everything our country stands for.

They will never stop until they tear our country down by any means possible.

yes asymmetry- Trump knows these agreements are rickety at best but announces them with hope. He’s a Republican so does not get the good intentions discount the way Fauci or any of the media endorsed party get when they manipulate…

The problem is Trump likely hasn't killed enough of the violent animals to make this work.

He is too kind a person.

I’m praying for the success of this peace initiative and for the war, but I’m increasingly skeptical about Trump’s future. The war, gas and grocery prices are crippling him on the domestic front. That $1.99/gal. gas Trump supporters kept predicting doesn’t look likely to happen in time for the Midterms, and the war is not concluding. The Dems are likely to take the House, and Trump is likely to become the lamest of ducks. He might even be facing another impeachment. Of course, Trump has a remarkable ability to rise up from the dead. Can he do it again?

mindnumbrobot বলেছেন...

You gotta give Trump credit, the man thinks big, and really believes we can all just get along. Some may say that's ridiculous considering his decision to attack Iran, but I think it underscores how bad the situation was. Military action was a last resort, and even now he holds on to the hope of peace. It's naive IMHO, but I'll give him credit for trying.

Iran and Hamas only have one hope at this point.

They can lie and stall and hope their democrat traitor allies win the midterms and bail them out.

Temujin বলেছেন...

I wish he would quit declaring 'deals are done' when he's dealing with lying Islamic terrorist groups. Hamas is not going to disarm until they are dead. Period. Everyone knows this except young people protesting in our streets or running for office as Democrats.
It's a nice plan. I hope it works out. But it won't as long as Hamas is a functioning operation in Gaza. A thing is what it is.

Cheerlead the Iranian war all you want, but it has destroyed Trump’s popularity. Israel has bragged about dragging us into this war that Bibi has said that he has wanted for 47 years, Rubio has admitted this. What happened 47 years ago? A popular revolution threw out Mossad’s puppet, the Shah and Iran took back control of their own oil stolen from them by an MI6,CIA, Mossad coup in 1953. BBC did a documentary on it, “A Very British Coup. Go ahead and google this stuff, or is it our patriotic duty as free Americans to believe lies?

As for who is crazy, Iran is hitting military targets, and playing out their hand using game theory, Israel blew up a city block and killed 300 people to kill a single Iranian official. The US and Israel have twice now in the past year killed negotiators during negotiations. I was as big a Trump supporter as you could find on this site, but in the three elections where I voted for him, he never said anything about starting or continuing wars.

Israel’s far right urges Netanyahu to reject Trump’s Gaza plan ~ FT https://giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/actions/redeem/2d6368c5-e432-4e1b-89ff-8b8248a15abd

"Benjamin Netanyahu was under pressure on Friday from far-right members of his government to reject a plan announced by US President Donald Trump under which Hamas would disarm in exchange for a phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza."

"However, US officials made clear that Trump expected both sides to abide by the deal, putting Netanyahu — who is hoping for the US president’s backing ahead of Israeli parliamentary elections later this year — in an uncomfortable position."

“We are not asking Israel to do anything other than agree to the 20-point plan that they agreed to initially, and so we are very confident they will adhere to it,” said one US official.

“If they don’t, obviously President Trump would be very, very disappointed.”

Howard বলেছেন...

As a metaphor, "drawing to an inside straight" means pursuing a risky strategy based on a wild hope with a very low chance of success. It describes building up high expectations for an unlikely outcome instead of following a practical, statistically sound plan.

Wince বলেছেন...

...he never said anything about starting or continuing wars.

The war with Iran has been "continuing" since it "started" over 45 years ago. The Iranian regime has been "playing out their hand using game theory" the entire time. Their strategy has been to use asymmetric warfare tactics while they build their conventional missile and nuclear (including dirty and EMP) warfare forces into an immovable deterrent both globally and regionally. Reflected the IRGC's revulsion at giving up their one remaining strategic card of threatening the straight.

Trump took the initiative and the political risk to interrupt that plan while fighting the battle exercising the patience needed to preserve what is necessary for Iran to emerge from the scourge of the IRGC without using ground forces to occupy the country.

Right now, the IRGC's strategy depends on suppressing domestic dissent and the election of Democrats in November.

Wince বলেছেন...

Dissenters here need to decide whether Trump is a tool of Isreal or not.

Aggie বলেছেন...

I'm as hopeful as anybody else that the deal will come to fruition productively, but privately I think that the only reason Hamas would agree to something like this, is because they've run out of things to break. I suspect the real reason for this is due to Iran's funding running dry, so now they must turn to buying time.

Hamas is ruthless. They do not see themselves as political and social leaders, they see their population as being useful as a tool for getting more money, or shielding their own scruffy necks. They're not going to change their mind and turn over a new leaf, any more than the IRGC is going to. They have to be defeated if you want to see change.

Nobody in the Trump administration believes that Iran or Hamas will faithfully honor any written agreement. That is not why those deals were made.

And of course, we now locked in a forever war with Iran, since we can't keep our agreements, or stop lying and killing their leaders.
