"I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina."

"This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!"

Signed President DONALD J. TRUMP, at Truth Social.

UPDATE: At the time Trump posted, McMaster had already offered Darline Graham Nordone the position and she had accepted, according to the NYT:
Mr. McMaster said that he has asked Ms. Nordone to fill the seat after they spoke “in the wee hours of Sunday morning” following Mr. Graham’s death, and that she accepted, “through tears.”
“I called the president afterwards, and he thought that it was a great idea,” Mr. McMaster said.
Trump's post went up at 9:43 a.m. today.

Also: "There is a long history in American politics of having the widowed wives of men who die in office finish out their terms. Mr. Graham, who never married, joked when he ran for president that, if he won, maybe his sister would take on the duties of first lady."

Was he a "spy"? From what I've read the Mossad wanted him to take over after the current leadership was destroyed by the sneak attack in February. He left office in 2013 and has been butt-hurt because the IRGG wouldn't let him hold another office. Reports claim he wanted to be another "Boris Yeltsin".

Its as if Iran planned to wipe out all the US leadership and install Mitt Romney as the new President. LOL.

My favorite was Jean Carnahan appointed to the Senate from Missouri.

Her husband died in a plane crash too close to the election to change the ballot. Even so, the dead candidate beat the incumbent, John Ashcroft, 50% to 48%, and the Governor appointed the widow to fill the seat.

When she ran in the special election 2 years later to finish the term, she narrowly lost to the Republican nominee.

If I were a senator and I passed on and they appointed my wife, the voters would be disenfranchised, as her politics are (mostly) diametrically opposed to mine. Which seems to be a common thing. The idea that the political views of a man's wife are the same as his is an ancient fiction.

Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, is viewed as a leading contender for McMaster to name as a temporary replacement for Graham's seat. She maintains strong ties with the governor and received Trump's backing during the primary campaign for governor.

Actually, in the SC GOP governor's race, Trump praised candidates Evette and Alan Wilson, saying, "There are two Highly Respected Candidates running to be your next Governor in the June 23rd Republican Runoff Election ... Both have had amazing careers, and have been with me from the beginning."

In his latest mindless position change, the Demented One said:

"I have somebody that I think would be great, but I don't want to say it now, because it's just, you know, it's too soon with Lindsey," Trump said. "I don't want to even talk about anybody, but I do have somebody that I think is really good."

His qualifications are in fact excellent, so calling him a "Magic Negro" as if he was chosen for his race is ignorant and bigoted. And the 2020 election in Michigan was stuffed with gross irregularities, so it seems likely that his seat was stolen along with Trump's return to the White House. I seem to recall that he was also ahead in the vote until some very suspicious batches of ballots came in. So calling him a "two time . . . loser" is also . . . at best a gross oversimplification. There is a whole media eco-system, built in part by people like Rupert Murdoch, to reinforce the narrative that thing are going great, that Donald Trump is the Messiah, that he is the only force keeping things together. On most of the right-wing media you are never going to hear anything bad about Trump. Trump will never be portrayed in a negative light. A lot of these people are also heavily invested in the idea that Trump is great president. Human nature is what it is, and it is very hard for people who are deeply invested in an idea to admit that they are wrong. This isn't an entirely partisan point either.

The qualified good news is that there were people in 2024 who voted for Trump, not because they have great faith in Trump or are plugged into right wing media, but because they were upset with the state of the economy and hoped that Trump would turn things around. Based on national opinion polls, it is clear that millions of these voters have moved away from Trump. It is an open question whether these voters will move to the Democrats -- some probably will -- however, a larger number will probably just sit out the election.

IEE seems to be under the belief that people haven't heard that leftists don't like Trump and that once people hear all the Democrats's claims about Trump they will stop liking him. That somehow we have all been bamboozled.

Really? Really? It's impossible to go a day without hearing the shrieking of a leftist about how Trump is the most evil human in history and how we'd all be better off if Satan, Hitler, Mao, and Stalin along with a bloodthirsty Aztec priest hell-bent on sacrificing all of us --that evil council would be better as dictators than Trump as an elected president. We hear that every single day, multiple times a day, from every leftist. No on in the world has not heard how much the left hates Trump. So IEE's "Oh, if only people could hear the leftist's view! they wouldn't like Trump then! It's our message that's not getting out!" Is just sheer B.S. We all know how much the left hates Trump and how eager they are to lie and twist everything to smear Trump.

And "Trump will never be portrayed in a negative light!" Talk about false claims! Try the truth: "Trump will never, no matter what, ever, ever be portrayed as anything other than worse than Satan" by places like the NYT, WaPo, Hollywood, etc. We all know that If Trump cured cancer, invented the Tree of Life so we are all immortal, cured world hunger, killed all the terrorists in the world, leftists like Kak and the NYT would still hate him and claim we are worse off and we should all commit suicide to atone for our sins in not screaming OrangeManBad all day, every day.

Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ বলেছেন...

The Republican Party at this point is so closely identified with Donald Trump that it makes no sense for candidates to pretend otherwise.

I remember in 2010 the super-intense anti-Obama backlash, after two massive and very favorable elections for Democrats. Democrats were wiped out in swing districts all over the country despite the fact that the overwhelming majority had been at pains to distance themselves from Obama, and despite the fact that Obama had put up historic numbers two years earlier.

There was a Democrat in Virginia, Tom Periello, who went the opposite direction in 2010, and actually made an effort to align himself with Obama. He lost his seat, but ended up out-performing the national average by a good margin and made things much closer than anyone might have expected. It is likely that several House members who lost seats in much more favorable districts might have held on in 2010 if they had done the same.

The key reason for this is that Obama motivated irregular and first time voters -- people who were Democratic-leaning voters -- but who were more loyal to Obama than to the party. Trump and the Republicans have a similar kind of dynamic. Damage control for Republicans in this cycle is going to turn on motivation. The Democrats do not need extra motivation. The challenge is going to be get people who are loyal to Trump, but not the Republican Party, to show up, even despite the fact that Trump's name is not on the ballot.

I'm still skeptical that this will save the Republicans in the mid-terms, especially if Trump's war against Iran starts to heat up again, and especially with the economic fallout from the war. But there is a kind of logic to what these Republicans candidates are doing. Once you have sold your soul to the devil, there is not really any benefit stopping half-way or trying to convince voters otherwise.

Not a single Democrat spares a thought for the thousands of Christians murdered in Nigeria. Schools and churches set on fire, children and young girls kidnapped and raped and sold as sex slaves. Michelle Obama held up a paper and that was the last time any Democrat said a word about the genocide of Christians by Muslims. But boy, are they all upset when a Muslim dies in an American strike. They are never, ever upset when thousands of Christians or westerners are killed by Muslims.

When white woke leftist Jamie Carney married a Muslim "refugee" from Jordan who stole all her mony and then beat her to death and fled with the money back to Jordan, leaving Carney's 13 year old daughter an orphan... did a Democrat say a word? Yes! They said "This is bad because it might make people not like Muslims!"

So no, I don't weep over any strikes on schools in terrorist Muslim countries. I would prefer we didn't, but if we hit a school that Terrorists are launching military attacks from... so be it. Democrats don't care when Muslims kill us, why should I care if we kill some Muslim terrorists?

Vance বলেছেন...

Actually, this is a good time to ask RCOcean if he has anything at all to say about the Christians being murdered by his good Muslim buddies in Nigeria. He defends Muslim atrocities all over the middle east so I'm sure he has a good excuse ready for why we should praise Muslims who surround Christian churches during Sunday services, spray fuel all over the church, set it on fire, then gun down the people trying to escape. That's Muslim behavior totally not connected with "Da Joooos!" that RC hates so much. Surely he defends his good righteous Muslim buddies while they do that kind of thing. After all, if only America treated the Muslims in Nigeria better, they wouldn't be doing this. Right, RC? Right? Or do you just support them no matter what?

The purpose of Trump accounts is to allow those at the base of the economic ladder to benefit from and understand that capitalism produces the wealth that we all dearly love, enjoy and fight over. Perhaps this understanding may slow down the commies, who ignore history and pretend that all of the exponential and expanding wealth that the past two centuries of capitalist economic systems have generated is simply "stolen" from the local dictatorships which ruled the world in the pre-capitalist era.
But I doubt it. Communism is all about power. Which is eternal. Facts be damned.

Did Platner actually file that letter with the Maine Secretary of State, or just post it? I wouldn't be surprised either way. it was full of "Death to America/the Joooooos!" though.

Your singularly graceless reply just makes you look proud of your nasty ignorance. Do you comment here instead of tweeting on X because there's no block button here?

We had an odd widow-succession in Tennessee's 3rd. A Democratic candidate, Mort Lloyd, was doing well but no shoo-in in 1974. He died in a small plane crash and the Party chose his widow, Marilyn Lloyd, for the ballot. She won (in the Watergate election) against a 2-term incumbent (pretty lackluster) Republican and proceeded to serve until 1995 on the strength of her constituent service (shades of Lindsey) and her generally moderate politics. Oh, and Oak Ridge. She worked hard for TVA and Oak Ridge funding. No one thought Mort would have done so well.
