Graham was poisoned by Russia during his recent trip to Ukraine! And, in the telephone game of social media, that has now transitioned from a crazy theory to a verified fact… because people further up the call chain already claimed it. So, it’s verified!
Well. I know a few people who will be not too upset about this.

Sigh...71 seems so young...said from the vantage point of 78. One would think he had the very best of medical preventative care and was on all the right meds to prevent an early fatal cardiac event. I'm not writing that to stir a conspiracy pot...just to acknowledge that death can happen early-ish in spite of everything.

I have an uncle who died at 50 of a heart attack. It was his second in a period of about a week - which meant that he was home with his family and had had a chance, and the motivation, to say everything to them that he wanted to say. He was far too young, but that week was a blessing.
And, a friend of ours had a heart attack at 50 followed by a stroke. He's made it an additional decade so far, for which we're very grateful. Since these events, he's made interesting choices: he's become vegan to try to better his odds (but he doesn't eschew fried foods, alcohol, or sweets, and he doesn't exercise at all and is carrying at least 40 extra pounds), he and his wife are living out as many of their dreams as they can afford, and this year he retired early. Bit of a mixed bag.
A few days ago, Lindsey said he was going to check on Mitch McConnell. He’s a man of his word with this. He’s talking to Mitch right now.

My father and grandfather both ran a dairy and had valve replacements in their early 50's and took blood thinners after that.
Most of our heart disease goes away if we stop eating vegetable oils and a wheat/corn based diet.
These things happen. My brother died suddenly last year with no indication of illness. His heart just stopped. He was 62.
I did not know that Graham was a retired AF officer. JAG, but still, he did deploy to the sandbox at least once. Also, his parents died when he was 21, leaving him to care for his teenage sister, who he adopted.
Sad news. It does seem like Lindsey Graham stopped doing the cable news circuit recently. But I sort of think this was a blood clot after a very long flight.
On the Mitch McConnell front, if his people were determined to fake his death or imminent death, could they use AI to fake his voice? Maybe the conversation Scott Jennings claimed he had was with a computer?

RIP, but I was never a fan - I thought he was one of those worst-stripe politicians, the suck-up kind that always smile, while being true to their own private agenda. I reformed my opinion a bit when I learned of his long military service and his devotion to his birth family and siblings.
The pressure will be on now to get McConnell replaced, who was a worse enemy to the President's plans.
This has got to be personal for a bunch of oldies like the Althouse crew. Lindsey was two years younger than me.
Genetics probably plays a big role. I read that his father died of a heart attack at age 69.

Agree that his work during the Brett Kavanaugh hearing was his finest hour.
Graham was. a mid-Boomer. I've long suspected that we may see more deaths of Boomers and later generations when they hit their 70s. It seems like the explosion of sugar in the diet for Boomer children may have had impacts that those growing up in the depression and war didn't have. Time will tell.
Full disclosure, I'm a late Boomer. But when people say he "died young" I'm not so sure he didn't just lead the trend.

Cardiac medications can lower risk and improve survival in many conditions, but they do not even eliminate the possibility of a fatal event. And 71y/o hardly qualifies as early for a fatal heart attack.

By a coincidence, I was thinking of Graham yesterday. I was scrolling through YouTube and came across "Judy Moonlight", a song made as a joke for a Bad Lip Reading episode with Graham "singing" a bit of it.
Somewhat OT but since it was mentioned, replacing McConnell if necessary is going to be a real pain. Our legislature in KY decided to change a fairly reasonable plan of presenting 3 names to the Governor for appointment to a special election with no interim appointment, and we've already got the general election for McConnell's seat coming up in November.

I'd forgotten how young Lindsey Graham was. He was almost 20 years younger than his idol John McCain. And 13 years younger than Joe Liberman and Mitch the Bitch.
It’s tough to process Graham’s sudden passing, no matter where you stand on his political views. He was to be on Meet the Press the following day, was on the Senate floor three weeks earlier, and even in Kyiv on Friday. Such a suddenness invites us to pause and consider before jumping to conclusions. Graham was a more complex individual than either his critics or the John/Taupin poem might imply. He ran against Trump in 2016, labeling him disqualifying, and then became one of his most trusted allies. He was also, as reported by various sources (see, Sen. Warner’s statement), someone who could work with those who disagreed with him. It’s crucial to remember this for its own sake, without trying to gain a cultural advantage “MAGA” or Woke or turn old tabloid rumors about his personal life into a joke on the same day his family is seeking privacy. RIP
Suprisingly, Miss Lindsey was last seen in Kiev on Friday. No doubt sampling the Gay night life and meeting with Zelensky. So yeah his "brief and sudden illness" was very sudden.

Yep. He's a month younger then me. From the pics I just looked t, rather obese. I think the medical term would be "morbidly obese". Morbidly being a good descriptor.
Probably had multiple indicators of suboptimal health. But were they even looked at? Also had one big predictor of a shorter then average lifespan. He was single. Statistically, that's a killer.
I liked Sen Graham. He didn’t always agree with me but he did mostly. People seem to have a real problem these days allowing anyone to have a single political disagreement. It is childish. RIP Senator Graham.

On sudden early death. I’m 79+ and take no medications, have never spent a day in the hospital. On June 6th my appendix ruptured. I thought I had pulled an ab muscle loading and unloading bags of mulch. I waited two days before going to the hospital. I was in for ten days on massive antibiotics and fluids. Based on comments from the doctors, I could have gone either way and was close to going the wrong way. I still have my ruptured appendix and a cathater drain in my ab. So, yeah, a short illness can kill you.

I don't think Elizabeth Warren was as eloquent in her defense McRapey.

When I saw the news, I wondered which of our commenters would make asses of themselves, and the results are mostly as expected:
First out of the gate, Jaq (7:59am), who encourages suspicions that he's really 'Timofei in Voronezh' by mixing up South and North Carolina. Many Americans mix up the two Dakotas, but nearly all find the Carolinas very different. It is refreshing to see him whining about Israel instead of Ukraine, though Lindsey was just back from Kyiv.
Next comes 'Michael' (9:10am), whoever he is, with a tasteless gay joke.
RCOCEAN II makes up for a late start (9:48am) with a whole string of vicious and stupid posts, starting with a whopper of a lie in the first: "Killing Russians" is not "the murder or killing of innocents", it is an attempt to stop said killing. Russia bombs apartment blocks every night and drones minibuses and civilian cars every day, timing both to increase the casualties. They call the latter "human safari". They rape, torture, murder, and sometimes behead prisoners and civilians, and violate every single provision of the Laws of War, often posting their crimes on social media for the approval of civilians back home. Ukraine strikes only military targets. And the Russian soldiers are nearly all volunteers, so not innocent at all.
Finally, Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ has made a series of unfunny "jokes" starting at 10:35am.
I am pleased and perhaps slightly surprised to see that DINKY DAU 45 (10:52am) is capable of fundamental decency.

As with Trump almost anywhere, Graham visiting Ukraine may well have been wearing body armor, making him look fatter than he was. Alexander Dugin was calling for him to be "flattened" just 4 months ago, and Iran had posters calling for him to be killed in the last week, so it would have been a reasonable precaution. This just in: Lindsey graham claims he and Mitch McConell had a 20 minute conversation on Senate affairs. "We're both dialed in" said Miss Lindsey "But the heat is intense".
Just to clarify, celebrating someone's death seems forgivable if the dead person is so vicious as to be utterly unredeemable. I figure there are 20-30 people in the world at any given time whose deaths I will feel entitled to celebrate with a hearty "Roast in Hell!". However, every one of them is either a brutal mass-murdering tyrant, or a literal serial killer or mass murderer. I was glad when Ceausescu was shot and when Saddam was hanged, and when Jeffrey Dahmer was murdered in jail, when Ted Bundy was electrocuted, and when Charles Manson died in prison. (I would have been gladder if the last hadn't been of natural causes). I will be glad when Assad and Putin and Son of Sam and Dylann Roof die. What can I say? I'm not perfect, and these seem to me venial sins.
But I draw the line at elected leaders, and will find it very easy not to celebrate when Biden, or Obama, or Bill Clinton, or even Hillary Clinton goes, though the last may cause some mental strain and tightened jaw muscles. It amazes me that so many here, and on Twitter, are so openly inhuman.

So if they keep McConnell 'alive' for another three weeks or so, they can keep a special election from happening, which might very well make the man Israel spent $35 million defeating him in his House primary, a US Senator for five months.
Why does RCOCEAN II hate Ukraine so much that he feels entitled to lie about it? Most likely because the top two Jewish heads of state in the world are Netanyahu and Zelenskyy.
Too many long flights? I've had some issues with Lindsey Graham over the years, but only a few. Mostly, even when I disagreed with him I admired his strong stands and seemingly non-stop energy running around to insert himself into the Big Fights. And there's this: agree with his backing Israel and Ukraine or not, he will be missed as a strong GOP Senator when we have so few of them. He was willing to put on the gloves and fight for things. And again, we have so few of them. And he sharp, a smart man.
He died too young. May he rest in peace.

I agree and would add that, if you run for election younger than 70 but the term of office (2, 4, or 6 yrs) you hope to win ends with you being over 70, that's your last election.
71 is young to me but my genes make 90 a possibility. I remember reading when Jim Fixx died there was discussion that he did die young but lived years longer than other family members.

Senator Lindsey Graham was a statesman. I hope that Donald Trump was not the last person he talked to and that the person who called 911 was someone who loved him.
Graham wasnt a conservative he was a neo-con. He was part of the Mccain's Gang of 14 that kept the filibuster for the appeals court and let the Democrats keep conservative justices off the appellete Court.
He was against MAGA in 2015/2016 and called Trump a racist and bigot. He was a massive Amnesty supporter. He wanted J6 protesters "shot in the head". He applauded Lt. Byrd who killed Ashli Babbit and called him a hero.
He was against getting rid of the filibuster and supported keeping the Senate in permenant session so Trump cant make recess appointments.
And he was in favor of non-stop wars. He was Mark Levin's favorite senator. And David French and Jonah Goldberg loved him too. He was everything wrong with the Republican party.
If he was a "Conservative" then you'll understand why Trump and MAGA aren't.

No doubt I could have phrased my comment better. My contempt for Jaq/imTay/Timofei is not only for his name-changing, but for his sneering at a man who's been dead for less than a day because he supported Israel. Supporting Israel against the genocidal subhumans trying to destroy it (Hamas, Hezbollah, Al Qaida, ISIS, and the puppet master Iran) seems like a no-brainer to me. That people on the other side can't even treat it as a subject on which honest men may disagree amazes me.
"McCain didn't give a damn about South Carolina but he sure loved Israel and Ukraine." Did RCOCEAN II write "McCain" when he meant "Graham" or "South Carolina" when he meant "Arizona"? Who can tell? When you have to pause to wipe the spittle off your lips, you tend to make these errors.

They have minimum and maximum standards for age and height, minimums for health, and (in Ukraine's case) they only take honorably-discharged veterans. Which of these disqualify me is none of his business, but I am in fact disqualified. Why doesn't he serve? Perhaps because foul-mouthed morons are also ineligible.

Dr. Weevil, I had much the same thought reading the responses. Events like this really allow people to reveal themselves. The worst commenters were entirely predictable. And DINKY DAO was a pleasant surprise. I’ve been living an isolated hermits life (albeit with Starlink) in rural Ireland the last few weeks and my interest in and tolerance for American political bile has really dropped. Of course, I’m still reading Althouse, just less of it.
The Senate Democrats and the MSM are in deep shock over "conservative" Grahams death. MTP just devoted a whole show to him. They even had Trump on and let him speak without the usual constant interuptions and "gotcha" questions.
Margaret Brennan of "face the nation" wrote about how she had talked to Miss Lindsey twice on Friday while he was in Kiev. Miss Lindsey has estatic because he and Sen. Blumenthal thought their new Russian sanctions were going to pass.
Durbin praised Miss Lindsey for his unflagging support for Amnesty and "the dream act". Sen Shieff on MTP said the same thing, and praised how Bi-partisan Miss Lindsey was. Why whenever you wanted to support massive immigration or to help illegals Miss lindsey was there!

What a childish way to look at politics. Unlike you, I actually care about the country and what we do overseas. Its not about me.
So yes. Its better for the world and the USA in particular that Miss Lindsey no longer in the Senate. Too bad he just didn't retire and go live in Tel Aviv or Kiev, but like McCain and McConnell the only way to get them out was feet first.

I already served in two wars that a piece of shit like you supported but never fought in.
There were many people in Iraq and Afghanistan that I tried to kill who were better people than you.
