"F*ck ICE. Free Palestine. Up the Hearts. Solidarity forever."

So writes Graham Platner, closing his letter formally withdrawing as a Senate candidate.

He says he "seek[s] to further the movement we have built together." The movement is better without him. But why? There's nothing in his letter expressing penitence or regret for anything he's done.

"Up the Hearts" — which struck me as a possible euphemism for an obscenity — is a rallying cry for the Portland Maine soccer team, the Hearts of Pine.

He stomps off — "F*ck ICE. Free Palestine. Up the Hearts. Solidarity forever."

I’ll try to say something nice about Platner: whereas the prophet Muhammad hated dogs and considered them evil, Graham Platner has a black Lab named Zevon and a shepherd mix named Gryffin/Griffin. In the Book of Meade, that’s one point for Platner (although even Hitler had a dog so there is that.)

I asked AI what “up the hearts” means
Up the Hearts” is a supporters’ chant for Bohemian FC (“Bohs”), Ireland’s oldest and only 100% fan-owned football club, based in Dublin.
Why it appears next to “Free Palestine”:
Bohs has become internationally known for using its jerseys and platform for social causes, especially Palestinian solidarity. The club donates jersey profits to Medical Aid for Palestinians. They also promote causes like refugee rights, anti-ICE messaging, climate justice, and anti-homelessness.

Do you think he ever, in his own head, tries to reconcile his support for 10-20 million illegals remaining in this country with his supposed championing of the economic welfare of working-class Americans? Hearts can also refer to Heart of Midlothian Football Club, a soccer team in Edinburgh. Their players and fans enlisted en masse in a pals battalion for WW1. Marillion has a great song called Heart of Lothian, detailing their original lead singer’s love for his hometown.

The thing is, is that the Israeli portion of Palestine is relatively free. It’s just not Muslim controlled, where the only ones with full rights are Muslim. Arabs living there are much freer than they would be under rule by Muslim terrorists, like the ones controlling Gaza.

Which is why we know that “Free Palestine” is a propaganda slogan, and not anything that very many of the Arabs living there want.

RCOcean, trying to add pagans via affirmative action is kind of an embarrassing argument to make, yes? Our republic and Plato's republic have very little in common.

Plato = big fan of slavery
Judeo-Christianity = not big fans of slavery

Plato = viability doctrine, abandon babies to die
Judeo-Christianity = love your babies, do not kill them

Plato = democracy is bad and voting is worthless
Judeo-Christianity = voting is good, educate people

I could go on and on. But most notable is your failure to deny that a lot of Democrats seem to be taking their ideology from the Palestinians. That includes mobs out in the streets, lying journalists, anti-Semitism, and the use of death threats, violence, and murder to intimidate political opponents.

There are innocent people in Gaza (of course), but it's ruled by Hamas, an evil terrorist dictatorship.

Smilin' Jack કહ્યું...

As for the Judaic contribution to the topic of slavery, we have Exodus 21:

“ 21 “Now these are the rules that you shall set before them. 2 When you buy a Hebrew slave,[a] he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing. 3 If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. 4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out alone. 5 But if the slave plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ 6 then his master shall bring him to God, and he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost. And his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall be his slave forever.”

That was for Hebrew slaves. For pagan slaves, the rules were considerably more relaxed.

It would have been a useful and apparently a NECESSARY step for Maine Democrats had they elected Platner. Something that might make a dent in their own bloody confusions.

The book of Deuteronomy, which is part of the Pentateuch, the Torah and the Bible, is the most widely quoted document by our Founding Fathers. I mostly agree with you. I would emphasize the Abrahamic religions' insistence on the individual, though. Every soul is equally (un) worthy before God, which leads to the idea that every vote is equal, every dollar is equal, every party in court is equal, etc. The other influences (and tbh original Judaism) were more about the relationships between groups: leading families in Greece/Rome, tribes in Germanic Europe. And if you weren't in one of the competing elite groups, you were nothing, in the eyes of society and the gods.

Also, the heart of the law is logic. And to take another lap on one of my hobbyhorses, logic comes from monks and rabbis trying to solve theological problems. CC, JSM

Platner who?

Meade કહ્યું...

“I would emphasize the Abrahamic religions' insistence on the individual, though.”

Of course, Abrahamic religions include Islam. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam shaped Western ethics, law, and culture through transmission, adaptation, and interaction. Each has gone through controversies, corruptions, and reformations. It might be more accurate to say Western Civilization has its basis in the ancient Israelites, out of whom came Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Saint Croix કહ્યું...

Hmm…Jesus grew up in the Roman Empire. Would have been surrounded by slaves; never said a word about it.

There are Christians who made that argument in the South. But those same people got mad at Yankees who came down here to teach the slaves to read, and baptized them and gave them Bibles. The Jews were enslaved by the Romans, of course, and the Bible is filled with stories about people seeking freedom. Big inspiration for the Christian preacher, Nat Turner and his rebellion.

Christ was a big inspiration for the abolitionist movement. John Newton, the former slave-trader, wrote Amazing Grace. And of course Christ inspired Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement.

It's like the people who say Christ never condemned abortion. He teaches us to love, and how to love, and the opposition to atrocities flow from that. In the original draft of our Declaration of Independence, Jefferson mocks the King of England for his support of the slave trade, while pretending to be a Christian. The deaths and atrocities were obvious to men with eyes that can see and ears that can hear. Lincoln was another powerful Christian.

Saint Croix કહ્યું...

See also "Christ never condemned the Nazis" or "Christ never condemned the Communists." And yet you find followers of Christ who do condemn the Nazis, and do condemn the Communists. It's almost like we learn from our rabbi how to think. Meanwhile the atheists brag about how they are secular humanists. More like free riders on the Christ train.
