Sigh. I've gained 8, thanks to my knee replacements and our recent pivot to a nomadic life. Taking them off is proving difficult when every new place is replete with restaurants to explore. (And on the road days between pieds-à-terre, somehow it's always burgers. We're trying to share a meal as often as we can because of the high calorie problem, but unfortunately for me my husband is not generally up for sharing a salad...)

George Foreman style grills. Grill steaks and burgers in the hotel. Saves money and time and you lose weight and heal faster.

The easiest way to lose weight and/or not gain weight when you're on the road is to either skip a meal or only eat half of the serving that the restaurant delivers to you. When you have a choice between a salad and fries, take the salad. When they ask what type of toast or biscuit do you want, decline. When they ask at the end of your evening meal if you want dessert, order a a cup of fruit.

The easiest way to lose weight and/or not gain weight when you're on the road is to either skip a meal or only eat half of the serving that the restaurant delivers to you.

Which is what we do - not eat half of the serving, but share one meal (longtime readers may recall that I am married to a reflexively frugal man). We never have dessert, and we eat minimally for 1-2 meals of the day (my "breakfast" is usually the cream in my coffee). If I were 25 again, I'd be underweight right now based on my caloric intake.

As for the advice about cooking on a George Foreman grill in the room - no. A big reason we're living the life we're living now is to see new places and have new experiences, including foods and restaurants. The problem is striking a balance, and we'll get there - the lifestyle is still new and exciting, and it won't stay so much that way forever.

100% - but exercise helps maintain weight, and I'm only recently back to my pre-surgery pace and stamina.

Another challenge we didn't see coming is the difference between fast and slow travel. We're now doing slow - staying in one place for a month, such that I have plenty of time to settle in and prepare healthful meals, while we also have time to explore. But we're coming off about six weeks of fast, staying only a night to a week in a place, which puts pressure on the exploration part of travel.

The question is one of urgency. How important is it for me to lose this right pounds right now? The answer is, not very - but more than it was when I'd just had my second surgery in February.

You may not be able to exercise off weight, but exercise still has two (at least) significant weight-related benefits. First, anything that builds muscle ups your metabolism, which leads to increased fat burning, even where the muscle gain balances out the fat loss. Second, I always found that any endurance-type exercise (for me, running) led to a noticeable decrease in my appetite for several hours post-run.

The other essential thing is that you must be willing to accept that hunger is a normal part of life. You will be hungry every day, not all the time, but quite a lot. Loosing weight is both simple and easy, it's just not effortless.

Everyone makes choices. You choose gaining weight.

Metabolism slows down as you get older for a variety of reasons but the biggest one is that eating carbs particularly grains wears your body down over time because it is poison.

Carbs and alcohol kill you in a very similar manner.

I don't know about you guys but the more I work out and the harder I work more hungry I get. The rub with weight loss as old and slow pointed out is being able to accept being hungry. It sounds simple but it's not easy. Otherwise we wouldn't have a majority obese population.

The math is really simple. To lose a pound of week you need to cut 500 calories per day.

We are all anorexics and we are all gluttons. It is a spectrum and we all share it. Nobody is really special this way. I have been jumping around on the spectrum as work and life stress collide.

But right now I am back to being hungry and being happy about it.

I am a big believer in theobromine right now. My experiments with it are going really well. Caffeine+theobromine works for me better than adderal. The resistance to doing things is way down.

Hee…I guess opinions vary on the meaning of “very easy”.

Anyway, that photo illustrates one of my pet peeves about “big”burgers. There’s no reasonable way to take a bite out of that thing unless you have a dislocatable jaw like a snake. If I want that much burger just give me two normal sized ones.

In any race between your mouth and your legs, your mouth wins everytime. Its the easiest thing in the world to stuff your face with 1000 calories at dinner. that's 3 hours a walking!
