"Secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier that President Trump might deliver positive news about negotiations over the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran 'a little bit later today.'"

"He added that the world could learn 'over the next few hours' about progress on resolving the shipping crisis in the Strait of Hormuz and also about a 'process' on other major issues, including Iran’s nuclear program. Rubio, speaking at a news conference with his Indian counterpart in Delhi, said that 'significant progress, although not final progress,' had been made in negotiations."

The NYT reported 55 minutes ago.

15 hours ago, Trump posted this at Truth Social:
I am in the Oval Office at the White House where we just had a very good call with President Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, of The United Arab Emirates, Emir Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, and Minister Ali al-Thawadi, of Qatar, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah, of Pakistan, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, of Türkiye, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, of Egypt, King Abdullah II, of Jordan, and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, of Bahrain, concerning the Islamic Republic of Iran, and all things related to a Memorandum of Understanding pertaining to PEACE. An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other Countries, as listed. Separately, I had a call with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel, which, likewise, went very well. Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly. In addition to many other elements of the Agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP

If that is the goal of the war, it was always for naught. There are no nukes to be gone. At worst, Iran has enough enriched uranium, that still is bomb grade, which it could enrich further to make a few nukes.

God bless. I hope we get rid of the material.

I know it's off-mission, but I personally would love it if we had regime-change in Iran. It would be nice if we could free up all of their money that is frozen. Over $100 billion. It would be nice if we could re-establish diplomatic relations. And the terrorists and war criminals are captured or killed.

The arrest of IRGC head, Ahmad Vahidi, would be a big step. The people of Iran have suffered for a long time. I hope that we can help them overthrow the regime. I am sure they would prefer to be a free state and part of the international community.

I'm also hoping many of the surrounding states in the region will sign the Abraham Accords. Recognizing Israel's right to exist is the key step to peace. The urge to wipe out the Jewish state has caused a lot of death and unhappiness.

I don't think Democrats will fight Islamic terrorism anymore.

Osama went to Israel and kissed the wailing wall.

I don't think Democrats will visit Jerusalem or say nice things about Israel anymore. They are all promising to cut financial ties to AIPAC.

What's next, a call to boycott Israel and cut them off from banking and other sources? When will the Democrats call for Israeli assets to be seized?

Democrats reject the idea that we ought to blame Islamic terrorism for all the deaths in the Middle East. Instead they blame one country, Israel, and heap scorn and hatred on it. More and more, they are a party who is mad at the Jews.

People talk about the Jewish state, like they've never heard of an Islamic state.

There are multiple Islamic states around the world. You can tell by their flags.

People say the leadership is secular. Maybe so. Not in Iran, and not in other places. But Pakistan (who does have nukes), yes, they are secular. And the Jews who run Israel are secular.

So now the question is, for all those people who are opposed to the Jewish state -- why? Why is this one state the one that you hate and despise?

People try to defend themselves by saying they are anti-Zionist. They don't hate the Jews. Just the Jewish state. Why is that the one state that you hate? What is the difference that you see there, and nowhere else?

Iran has two friends in the world now, Putin and Xi. Putin because Iran is Putin’s only friend, and Xi because they could get cheap oil from Iran because they could ignore sanctions. After shooting missiles at all the other Middle East nations Iran will become the Little Rocket Mullah of South Asia.

All Iran has left is the oil plant, which was not destroyed. Oil and the privilege of killing 30k civilians including teen age girls. Other countries want that oil, so the US should consider that over the desire to go in and clean out the rat infestation that is Iranian leadership.

I would be emotionally satisfied with the purging and total defeat of the perps in Iran, but it’s a big world with lots of partners and I’m willing to be pragmatic in this. Similar to the Cartels in Mexico or the mob gangs in big cities you can’t fixate on purity, you can reasonably only apply countermeasures that require periodic maintenance.

I would draw the line at getting the 40kg of 60% U235 they have, and having navigation in Hormuz free, and then let Iran live in the world they have created. Then we will see what happens next.

There is no military solution here—a reality some Americans still struggle to accept.

Meanwhile, Trump still is trying figure out what he’s actually doing in the Middle East, beyond keeping Netanyahu and his influential American supporters happy. At this point, they seem to exert outsized control over U.S. politics.

The fantasist problem in Washington has reached epic proportions. Billionaires fund endless war scenarios pushed by aging ideological adolescents, while their political stooges carry them out. These aren’t serious strategies—they’re video game scripts.

This war, like most before it, has been enthusiastically cheered on by think-tank fantasists.

For the American people, restoring prosperity now requires a clear-eyed decision: leave the Middle East. The U.S. needs to execute another Afghanistan-style withdrawal, but on a much larger scale. Remaking the region has proven to be a fool’s errand. The other inescapable conclusion is this: America will never restore its international credibility and leadership until it disengages from the Middle East. That reckoning is finally coming home to roost.

Netanyahu and Trump went looking for a war that served their careers. Both lost. The bill went to everyone else.

mikee કહ્યું...

When this started I commented on an Althouse post that unconditional surrender should be the required response from Iran, and it should be accepted after about a week of begging while destruction of their regime continued. Let me say it again. That regime needs to be eliminated more thoroughly than the Nazis were destroyed, and without leftovers like when the Soviet Communists were disempowered. Convince the Iranian government that their behavior for the past five decades should never be repeated. Ropes and steet lamps would be the best way for the Iranian people to handle the post war remnants of the Iranian regime.

What I don't understand is how the people of Iran are profiting from these struggles, many of which they initiated or supported.......I don't think the women of Afghanistan especially rejoiced in our departure. The millions of Vietnamese people forced into exile or re-education camps after the Communist victory were less enthusiastic about the Communist victory there than Bill Ayers.......I think the record shows that those countries in the Middle East that have worked out a living arrangement with the USA and Israel fare better than those who don't.

Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ along with $1.8bn of Kleptocracy કહ્યું...

@Mikee: So the list of demands from both sides, which have been tossed back and forth over the last many weeks is broadly summarized below.

Even a casual glance over the list shows the maximalist nature of the demands being made by both sides, along with a steadfast refusal to tone them down even to a minor extent.

Given this situation, and the vital necessity for both sides to show their respective domestic constituencies that they have "won a great victory" and completely vanquished their enemy, it seems difficult that a via-media solution is feasible.

The Trump administration appears to have mostly lost the appetite for further military confrontation, given the proclivity of Iran to hit-out at the key energy infrastructure of all its neighbors in the region, again and again.

One genuinely wonders what precisely are the Pakistani negotiators actually negotiating, with all this back-and-forth, when both sides are so deeply entrenched.

So the US first halted imminent further strikes because Pakistan requested them to do so, then they halted imminent further strikes because Saudi, UAE and Qatar requested them to do so, then they will halt imminent further strikes because Afghanistan, Egypt and Somalia requested them to do so, then they will halt imminent further strikes because the Cayman Islands, Granada and Tonga requested them to do so and so on.

And the Iranians will continue to choke the flow of all shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and continue with their promises to rain fire and brimstone on all their neighbors and even on those who are not their neighbors, unless all their demands are promptly fulfilled and the world bows to them and to their delusions of power.

All the while, the rest of the world continues to suffer, with shortages of fuel, fertilizers, chemicals and other material that transits through the Strait.

Who will break this malevolent gridlock, despite the periodic rose-tinted prognostications emerging from the Trump administration?

Main Demands:

Iran:
Control of Strait of Hormuz and recognition of Iran's sovereign authority over Strait
End of US naval blockade of Strait of Hormuz
End of all conflicts including Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen
Binding international guarantees backed by UNSC to ensure Iran is not attacked again
Withdrawal of US forces from the region
Reparations to Iran for war damages
Lifting of all sanctions on Iran
Release of all frozen funds of Iran
Iran to retain its right to enrich Uranium as NPT signatory

US:
Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz fully to ensure free flow of shipping
Complete repudiation of all Iranian attempts at tolls, tariffs, fees on shipping
Dismantling of key Iranian nuclear facilities in Natanz, Isfahan and Fordow
Commitment from Iran to not enrich Uranium for at least 20 years
Iran to surrender its entire stockpile of enriched Uranium
Iran to end support to all its proxies in Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen and Syria
Strict and verifiable caps on number and range of Iranian ballistic missiles and drones
Permanent ban on Iran attacking regional energy infrastructures in Gulf

IMO the best that can be said is that both sides appear to believe that the costs of renewed escalation are extraordinarily high, that there does not appear to be a major risk that diplomacy is about to break down but that there remains a huge gap between the two sides demands that suggests no deal is currently in the offing.

The Art of the Deal
Iran says the now fully leaked “Memorandum of Understanding” does not include any obligation for Tehran to surrender nuclear stockpiles, dismantle equipment, close nuclear facilities, or formally agree not to pursue a nuclear weapon, contradicting U.S. claims, per Fars News.

According to the report, all nuclear-related matters would instead be postponed to a 60-day negotiation period following the agreement’s signing.

Iranian officials reportedly say the U.S. would first need to accept zero upfront nuclear concessions from Iran, unfreeze $100 billion in Iranian assets, end the naval blockade, suspend all oil and petrochemical sanctions during negotiations, pay $270 billion in war reparations, and recognize the Strait of Hormuz under full Iranian sovereignty and control with no U.S. presence and pre-war shipping traffic restored.

Hard to tell whether he's reacting to the deafening TACO backlash or the fact that the Iranians aren't budging on nukes or the Strait.

One of the worst deals ever made by our Country was the Iran Nuclear Deal, put forth and signed into existence by Barack Hussein Obama and the rank amateurs of the Obama Administration. It was a direct path to Iran developing a Nuclear Weapon. Not so with the transaction currently being negotiated with Iran by the Trump Administration - THE EXACT OPPOSITE, in fact! The negotiations are proceeding in an orderly and constructive manner, and I have informed my representatives not to rush into a deal in that time is on our side. The Blockade will remain in full force and effect until an agreement is reached, certified, and signed. Both sides must take their time and get it right. There can be no mistakes! Our relationship with Iran is becoming a much more professional and productive one. They must understand, however, that they cannot develop or procure a Nuclear Weapon or Bomb. I would like to thank, thus far, all of the countries of the Middle East for their support and cooperation, which will be further enhanced and strengthened by their joining the Nations of the historic Abraham Accords and, who knows, perhaps the Islamic Republic of Iran would like to join, as well! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP

Just because you are too stupid to understand what is happening doesn't mean we are or Trump is.

Trump is in no hurry because the straight of Hormuz being closed doesn't hurt the US like it hurts the rest of the world. We just got everything we wanted from China because the strait is closed.

The longer the strait is closed the more oil the US pumps and the more our economy produces. Oil will continue to descend to 70$ a barrel whether the strait is opened up or not.

Netanyahu did not trick America. He found, in the MAGA movement, a partner that wanted to be used. A president with no strategic compass of his own, vain, bored by detail, surrounded by men chosen for loyalty over competence. And a movement that had turned fealty to Netanyahu’s government into a test of ideological purity, so total that AIPAC and the Republican Jewish Coalition spent millions to purge Thomas Massie, the one Republican who called this war unconstitutional. MAGA was not dragged to the war. It cleared its own party of anyone who objected to it.

And what did MAGA get for its loyalty. Gas at 4.56 a gallon. Six American soldiers killed at a makeshift command post near Shuaiba. An Iranian F-5, an aircraft older than most of the pilots who fear it, penetrating the layered defenses of Camp Buehring and completing a bombing run on an American base.

A war launched in March to reopen the Strait of Hormuz that three months later still had not reopened it, so that “reopening Hormuz” sits in Trump’s weekend peace announcement as a thing still to be achieved.

Netanyahu found the perfect instrument for his doctrine. The instrument was the most incompetent man in world politics,
and it broke in his hands, and it took the prestige of American power down with it. Two men went looking for a war that served their careers. Both lost. The bill went to everyone else.
Netanyahu, this time can hardly be considered the lesser fool.
