It's mid-May, the 15th, and we see deep red columbine.

Back home, it's time once again to move the avocado tree back out onto the deck. That's a big production, and I played only a small role in the process, but it was a bit more than just taking this picture:

How long have you grown that avocado for? Mine’s been going for about 5 years and it’s nowhere near that full.

Tim, the big planter center stage is from 7 pits planted in succession over the last 15 years. The 2 stage left are 2 and 3 years old respectively.

I can’t believe that’s in Wisconsin. I love the shape. Are you saying that each of those trunks is from a separate pit?

"I can’t believe that’s in Wisconsin."

Well, it needs to be brought in for most of the year and it never produces fruit. It looks great inside. I really love the big tree in the house.

Come on, we know “time to move the avocado tree” is your household euphemism. CC, JSM

It's striking that just a short time ago it was a frozen tundra there. Just a slight difference in sun angle to make this change.

Walking in 100 degree sun yesterday at a parade on the Vegas Strip, I was thinking about how long the World would last if the sun just suddenly turned off. What strategies would be employed, how nuclear power could sustain some of us, and if anybody would get a refund on those solar panels on the roof.

To grow good avocados one needs compost made from giant sloth poo.

The wild columbine bulbs are sweet as honey when you bite them, but the ones you buy at the store to plant in your garden, with the exotic shades? Taste like wax. Those look pretty good if they are anything like the ones that grew in PA.

“ Are you saying that each of those trunks is from a separate pit?”
Yep. Try it yourself — next time you eat an avocado, instead of tossing out the pit, plant it in a pot of growing medium with excellent drainage. After a shoot emerges, give it a little slow-release fertilizer and saturate soil with water whenever the leaves droop, every 1-2 weeks. Err on the side of under-watering and under-fertilizing. Indirect sun or light shade. Tolerates frost down to 30F.

I like the coleus…and I used to have the bar height version of that table and chairs on my deck in Boston. Kind of miss sitting there…

When does Mr. Avocado tree go back inside, October?

RCOCEAN II বলেছেন...

I never wouldve believed that avocado trees could be brought inside. Maybe you could try a pineapple tree next (harhar).

Does your avocado have a name? Is it Arthur?

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Yes it is Arthur look it up in the archive of this blog and you’ll see

Looks like it might be time to give them a bigger pot.

Wow! Every time I see your avocado tree, I think I should plant one.
