Part of the premise behind Noah Baumbach's film "While We're Young" was that Boomers and X-ers (like Baumbach and the film's lead, Ben Stiller) were trying to catch up with new tech, while Millennials (like Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried) were avoiding it and embracing retro tech. Did that actually happen?

Two articles in my inbox: one about how the AI generation is rejecting AI and another about how Gen Z and Gen Alpha's embrace of AI has led to the collapse of higher education. Is any large group, especially of young people, really going to reject what the tech industry offers.

Iran war hits Americans with $40bn fuel bill ~ FT
"the conflict’s hit to consumers from higher petrol and diesel prices was $41.5bn as of Sunday night — or $316 per US household." https://costsofwar.watson.brown.edu/paper/IranWarEnergyCosts

"The $41.5bn additional fuel outlay exceeds the entire $40bn federal Bridge Investment Program to restore major crossings, the $31.5bn cost of completely redoing the US air traffic control system.

Great comparison against what we could have funded in a month. Also don’t forget the $30-50b in military spend for Iran and lost bases.

Iran will continue to string the US along as long as possible in order to inflict maximum damage on the US economy, Trump’s ratings, US weapon stockpiles, Republican performance in the midterms and the list goes on. And Russia and China are in on the game.

When babies are first becoming capable of responding to what they see, they learn to follow an object with their eyes. Presumably, because the object contrasts strongly with the background. A bright blue ball, say.
Then, when they get a little older, they start to recognize that the object continues to exist, even when it goes behind another object. At this point, we have gone from analyzing the 2D visual field, to conceptualizing a 3D Universe. That is, the 2D sensory input, is easier to organize, and use to make predictions, if you catalogue it in a 3D filing system. Yes?

This corresponds to the transition from a heliocentric Ptolmeaic system of cosmology, which describes what is seen -- a procession of lights on a 2D celestial sphere -- in terms of mathematical objects defined in that 2D space, to a Copernican paradigm, which describes what is seen -- again, a procession of lights on a 2D celestial visual sphere -- as the projection on the 2D visual perception space of motions occurring in a 3D physical space.

Just wanted to chime in with a few more of my favorite novels for whom it may concern:
1. A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich- I ballyhooed this a few months ago but it's worth repeating. This book exceeded all expectations. The daily routine of a prisoner in a Siberian gulag after WWII. Great characters and storytelling, grim misery tempered with dark humor in effortlessly readable working-class prose. One of the rare books that I didn't want to end.
2. Tropic of Capricorn/Tropic of Cancer- A twofer here by Henry Miller. A rapscallion's adventures in Paris and New York City. The protagonist is a struggling ne'er-do-well who is always hustling up some angle to get money, food, booze, or a piece of ass. Crazy characters in desperate situations rendered by a hilarious and irreverent narrator. Great storytelling.
3. The Day of the Locust- A madcap tale of down and out oddballs in depression era Hollywood. Zany, politely raunchy, and absolutely hysterically funny. Storytelling that makes you laugh out loud a lot.
4. Pale Horse, Pale Rider- A collection of three novellas by Katherine Anne Porter, all set in rural Kansas around the time of the first World War. Not a lot of laughs in these ones, just great writing, great storytelling, and some shocking twists touching on love, duty, fate, and death.
5. The Talented Mr. Ripley- A riveting crime novel with superb writing by Patricia Highsmith. A compelling study of a sociopathic character that seduces the reader until you find yourself rooting for wickedness to prevail, or at least get away with murder. Bonus recommendation: The 1960 technicolor movie Purple Noon starring handsome charmer Alain Delon. This flick is just brilliant and beautiful, full of twists and turns, and for those who don't do subtitles, the English-dubbed version was so well done, so seamless, the voices so suitable and perfectly synchronized with the speakers you'd swear the original was filmed in English.

Jupiter বলেছেন...

You might ask, if the 2D Ptolmeaic model describes, and even predicts, the motions of the lights visible in the sky, every bit as well as the much more complicated 3D Copernican model, in what sense is the Copernican model better?
Well. The Ptolmeaic model can tell you where Venus will be. And it can tell you where Luna will be. But when Luna and Venus are both in the same place, as they are this evening, the 2D Ptolmeaic model offers no clue as to which one you will see. Whereas, the 3D Copernican model says that Luna is much, much closer than Venus, and you will always see the celestial object that is closer. Duh.

Also, if you wanted to, say, land a mechanism on Venus, as has been done, the Copernican model will allow you to figure out how to do that. Whereas, in the Ptolmeaic model, it's not even clear what that would mean. The lights in the sky are lights in the sky. No more, no less. They are not objects like the Earth, where it might be possible to "land".

Hemingway published The Sun Also Rises

That's kind of a shock, because it's a very modern novel. It was my favorite book when I was a kid.

Has humanity changed that much since 1926? I would say, not at all! But of course technology has changed quite a bit since then. What we call "progress" is really just understandings of science and technology, the discoveries that we make. Humanity itself is not progressing at all, it seems to me. I don't think art is progressing much either, for that matter. Anyway, classic novel, I ought to read it again.

I'm currently re-reading the #2 book of 1926, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. I know who the killer is, so some of the prime fun is lost to me. But Christie is a very good read. The most popular fiction writer of all-time. I totally get that. Her ability to craft a puzzle is unsurpassed.

It's weird that Hollywood has given up on Hemingway. They made The Sun Also Rise, but it was horrible. (Apparently, I haven't watched it). Christie movies are still getting churned out. And I'm still watching them, even though I know who all the killers are! The first two Kenneth Branagh whodunnits are a lot of fun.

All those stupid reports from the Commerce department--Bam! AI created and published and analyzed in minutes, not months.

Jobs reports from Labor are currently projections that are often wrong and need correction later, but Alakazam! AI could generate detailed information on unemployment, underemployment, and overemployment.

Contracts sent out to bid are right now a huge hassle and the process which is supposed to be fair is really only a corruption and payoff scam for everyone. But a clean process where the government (local, state or fed) could buy the products that it needs from vendors who can make a reasonable profit---think of the savings!

You can continue this list with your own AI idea to make government more efficient. Sort of a 'more perfect union' plan.

But I say honestly that I have not heard a lot of politicians or public servants push this at all. Am I low-information? Just missing the stories out there? No, I think AI would put too many ricebowls out of work.

I have been an observer of the American scene since the the mid 1960’s although with powerful media data quality is a problem. You know who got it right? Archie Bunker did. Not in the insulting blurbs, but in his heart and soul. The meatheads were mere self indulgent know it all dipshits. All societies are infested with fleas that take pleasure in rejecting everything normal that leads to a decent life. At that time the fleas became ascendant, they tipped the balance toward convincing the masses that weakness was strength and it was better to support your foreign enemies than your own culture. I won’t re-litigate Vietnam or the bombs of the weather underground, or or their echos, however from the standpoint of where we are today western society has lost much and has a long road ahead to get back to a forward moving healthy community.

Ho Chi Minh was a winner, the Soviets were the vanguard of a bright future, and China was a 3000 year old civilization that had all the answers. But none of these answers satisfied the human quest of the enlightenment, none gave humanity the intellectual spark of the naieve Americans who started at the bottom and built anew in the face of perfect European societies who knew that royalty was the answer. They led to misery, petty but crushing exercise of power, and poverty.

Why does everyone in the world want to come to the US? Even the children of Chinese and Iranian overlords. Why is there birth tourism? Look at the French, who have studied the world so hard that they know that everything others do is deeply wrong, but can’t make their own house work, except to abandon all to hedonism.

I read James Carville and mainstream democrats and see only a disillusioned mob who have decided to burn the house down on their way out. It’s not a plan, it’s a suicide.

So more of Archie and less of the morally bankrupt meatheads.

I don’t really mean to critique the Basket on every front but just trying to understand why so many buy into things that simply are not true. Up here in the real world, the value is in the facts, policy details, and evidence underneath, not the emotional packaging.

“We couldn’t measure success, so we measured what we were successful at.” ~ Robert McNamara

My favorite quote from the Vietnam War, referring to the obsession with kill ratios. In the end, free trade and capitalism transformed Vietnam far more than bombs ever could. Yet the U.S. still fails to recognize where its real power lies.

Trump has fallen into the same trap: mistaking military superiority for the ability to impose his will on distant nations.

Count the “obliterated” targets. Tally the senior leaders’ bodies. By any measure, Iran has been pounded. Yet threats of more U.S. strikes have yielded no concessions. Trump’s warnings — including bombing Iran “into the Stone Age” — have rung hollow since early March. Repeating a failed tactic and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.

The current spectacle is remarkable only for its earnest performance of a tired farce. Trump isn’t riding a one-trick pony — the pony is leading him by the nose.

The relatively calm equities market belies the absolute rout underway in Treasuries. Trump is highly sensitive to stock prices, but his economic advisors—like Bessent—care far more about bond yields. Those yields are now flashing a major warning sign to the White House. Given oil’s outsized role in driving the rate rise, the pressure in the Treasury market will likely push the administration even harder to find an exit from Iran.

I think we’ve discussed Paul Pelosi, attacks on Democratic officials, J6, Daniel Perry, and other examples before. So I’m struggling with the word “finally” here. It feels like prior examples keep getting reset, minimized, or recategorized once they don’t fit the broader narrative.

Every side tends to do this. The harder question isn’t whether left-wing violence exists (it obviously does), but what standards we apply when violence comes from our own side.

And yes, they could have been nutters. We don’t know but nice escape hatch.

Infinite Ex: " In the end, free trade and capitalism transformed Vietnam far more than bombs ever could. "

Yes, it is ironic that postmodern "Communist" VN is pretty close to a capitalist US ally. But I think the bombs were necessary to reaching this end state.

If we had just abandoned Asia to the ChiComs in 1949, there'd be no ROC, ROK, Thailand, heck maybe no Japan or Australia as we know them. No capitalist examples just over the border. No fear of the US intervening and, win or lose, killing a bunch of your people in the effort. Close to a duplication of the USSR's control of eastern Europe. With no Western norms bubbling under the surface. So nothing to make the system unstable. Nothing to motivate the CCP or any of its client regimes to go capitalist. CC, JSM

Mike (MJB Wolf) বলেছেন...

“What gets measured is what gets done”.

We had a management version that is similar, though phrased as a negative: What can't be measured can't be managed.

It's one of those executive tools that nudge managers into making measurable projections instead of "we'll boost good vibes 20% this quarter," which of course cannot be accurately measured. Upper management needs to know units/sales/ROI or other measurables like manpower or facilities improvements.

But yes, the natural tendency of government agencies is to do everything possible to keep labor-saving devices from saving labor.

I remember when I started in fedgov in the 90s, we had all these clerks whose main job was to type reports from Dictaphone tapes, then file the reports in paper files.

25 years later, with people typing their own reports, no Dictaphones, and electronic files, we had the same number of clerks. CC, JSM

Well I think certified nutjobs like the fellow who shot Gabby Giffords are exempt from this list because of motive. "Political violence" means overt acts taken to nudge political opinion or social change. Almost every presidential would-be assassin does it for political reasons, from Boothe on down.

Only now the WaPo and NYT encourage more of it.

john mosby বলেছেন...

Sanctuary cities started as a law-and-order measure. Mayors and police chiefs could do nothing about the Swiss-cheese border, but they had to deal with the invaders in their cities. Most of the invaders committed no additional crimes and were indeed the primary victims of the minority of violent invaders. But they didn't want to testify or even call 911 in fear of being deported. So cities started telling them they wouldn't ask anything about anyone's immigration status, with the result that they detected and prosecuted more crimes. Similar logic led to invaders being eligible for driver's licenses, since the alternative would be a huge fleet of unlicensed drivers.

Then about 10 years into this movement, Democrats had a Calvin-like (& Hobbes, not John) epiphany and realized what else they could do with the sanctuary policies. CC, JSM

No the Dems started this in the 80s over central america

RJW বলেছেন...

Mike, I’m more of a “show me the receipts” kind a guy and don’t put much into spin from the propaganda machines.

The “Grindr” narrative was investigated and never supported by evidence. It originated online after the attack and persisted despite lack of corroboration. The intruder’s own statements and reported beliefs were widely discussed at the time..

The “J6 was a mostly peaceful protest … we didn’t kill anybody. The dirty cops did” doesn’t fly either. It’s definitional reframing. Rewrite it how you like, or how you’ve been instructed to but it involved forced entry, assaults, injuries, disruption of certification, and explicit political purpose. Whether one thinks it was an insurrection, riot, protest, or mixture is separate from whether political violence occurred.

Your management analogy is actually useful here. “What gets measured gets managed.” Fair enough. But if events keep getting excluded from measurement—Pelosi becomes a possible Grindr story, J6 becomes “mostly peaceful,” mosque shooters become “nutters,” Giffords exempted—then the metric itself becomes biased.

I’m not arguing left-wing violence doesn’t exist. It clearly does. I’m questioning whether the standards are being applied consistently.

If violence is political only when it supports their side and mental illness only when it supports our side, the measurement system is broken before the analysis even starts.
