“The debate over the U.S.-Israel campaign against Iran is mostly organized around the politics of one man rather than the war itself, which deserves serious study on its own terms. The Iran war is the first large-scale U.S. operation in a generation to abandon ‘escalation management’ and ‘proportional response’ in favor of front-loaded, overwhelming force. It has been executed with restraint toward civilians. This will be a major part of this war’s legacy.
For decades, proportional response functioned less as a strategy than a ritual: hit a transmitter, strike a barracks. This theory, codified in Cold War deterrence doctrine, held that matching force with roughly equal force would control the so-called escalation ladder. These rules of engagement protected enemy sanctuaries.
The early phase of Epic Fury discarded that playbook. Nearly 900 strikes in 12 hours targeted Iranian military infrastructure, air defenses, and regime leadership simultaneously.
This showed overwhelming superiority, delivered as an opening blast. Iran attempted to re-escalate by threatening the Strait of Hormuz and striking nearby Arab states, but those measures failed to change the battlefield calculus. The doctrine of controlled escalation, with its tit-for-tat approach, had been set aside as the U.S. military imposed a strategic ceiling the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps couldn’t breach...
“Whatever one thinks of Operation Epic Fury, the signal is unambiguous: The U.S. is willing to apply overwhelming force, with deliberate restraint toward civilian infrastructure and without escalation anxiety. That is a different America from the one Iran and China have been modeling. They are updating their models now.
The media will keep covering this war as a story about Donald Trump. That is their prerogative and their loss. The actual story is bigger than any one president and will outlast this news cycle by a generation.”
Pewter-grey and orangey brown--who would think they could look so good together?
Speaking of getting old, I had to show ID today and the clerk pointed out that my drivers license was expired. Sure enough I've been driving around for about five weeks in blithe ignorance of jeopardy. If asked about renewal, I would have thought it centered on my birthday, but that's weeks away.
I suppose I could have missed something mailed to me about renewal.
I've forgotten my wallet with the DL a couple of times in the last year too--something I used never to do, speaking of getting old.
Free Speech question for the Althouse community: Should I lose my license to practice law because I criticized the Knox County Sheriff based upon publicly available information and the fact that I had the written consent of the Knox County Board?
If you comment, bear in mind that the former Knox County Attorney who wrote the grievance against me (but he had the Sheriff sign and file it) is now a reader of the Althouse blog.
I used to think Free Speech was protected in America, but now I’m not so sure.

Only dead person is the shooter, so far. Speaker Johnson, Vance, Trump evacuated. But they're preparing to resume the event, apparently with the VIPs present. But the gunfire was apparently heard in the hall.

President Donald Trump was uninjured and other top leaders of the United States were evacuated from an annual dinner of White House correspondents on Saturday night after an unspecified threat. There did not immediately appear to be any injuries, and one law-enforcement official said a shooter had opened fire.
Authorities said the incident occurred outside the ballroom where Trump and other guests were seated. It was not immediately clear what happened.

Officer shot in bullet-resistant vest at correspondents’ dinner but is expected to be OK, law enforcement official says
the trolling scum on this blog must be happy. What happened tonight at the White House is a natural progression of the hate, racism, and bigotry the leftists push, 24/7 for 10 years. This is the society they want to create, and have created in Calif, Mn, NY etc. And not one of them can defend the policies they promote. NOT ONE It is always 6th grade insults, and talking points given to them by their masters. disgusting scum, all of you who promote death and destruction fueled by hate. fuck you The SS is doing a wonderful job, for a DEI, feminist infused institution. that's sarcasm for the leftists.
Also- but I've not seen confirmed elsewhere: Laura Loomer @LauraLoomer Protestor who attempted to ram President Trump’s vehicle motorcade while the shooting took place tonight at WHCD was wearing a Keffiyeh.
If this was a Muslim inspired shooting by a Palestinian or Iranian, people must be made to pay severely.
Related or unrelated to the shooting? Makes a difference. In many ways.
Tangentially related to the topic at hand, Bill Glahn at Powerline points out the Democrat-lead DHS shutdown over ICE/CBP (according to them) actually impacts on other DHS sub-agencies such as the Coast Guard and Secret Service since ICE/CBP were funded under other appropriations bills.
Fucking Carol Leonnig is on MSCOW in her ball gown, telling Stephanie Ruhle in her ball gown all the problems she saw in the security arrangements. GFY. CC, JSM
I think it is fair to say that even conservative "correspondents" (the few, the proud) as well as liberal may be excused for "cowering" when confined, unarmed, in a venue where shots are being fired and the most controversial person on the planet is on the dais. They may be "correspondents" but they are not complete idiots.
so, the democrats and the media both conspired to attempt to assassinate The President, AGAIN tonight. I'm NOT Sure what else we would expect from them.
Every few months, Americans are asked to resume their banquet and pretend a shooting didn't just happen. Well, in fairness, that's what we ask of school kids.
The WH Press Room is filled with newsies in black tie and ball gowns. And you know half of them were drunk off their asses when this thing happened. Might have sobered them up a bit. CC, JSM
Karoline Leavitt is hugely pregnant. She held her last prenatal WH briefing yesterday, but she went to tonight's event. Her thinking must be very concentrated right now. CC, JSM
Trump is joking around with the head of the Correspondents Association. He said he had a hell of a speech ready, but now it's probably inappropriate. When they redo the dinner in 30 days, his new speech will be boring. He did kind of a head-tilt-shake-smile thing that reminded me of Reagan. Just trying to make common cause with this gal. Charming AF, less than an hour after someone tried to kill him.
The left and the RINOs missed out on what could have been 8 years of constructive dealmaking. And it's not even going to be worth it for them, because he is dismantling all the systems they live off. CC, JSM
On Truth Social, Trump posted a pic of the shooter proned out and cuffed, with his shirt off. Also there's video, I guess from the hotel security cams. USSS people are standing around (because all the reporters are already in the event), and then the shooter comes running through. Action is faster than reaction. CC, JSM
The suspect in the White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting has been identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California. He graduated from Cal Tech with an engineering degree in 2017 and earned a master's in computer science in 2025.
Law enforcement presser going on now. The boss of the FBI Washington Field Office is in a tux. That's weird. Why TF was he attending the event? The USSS director is in a golf sweater, as he properly was not attending. Similar with the DC Mayor. CC, JSM
Judge Pirro was attending, because she was a newsie until last year - nice dress. She made a nice remark about how all the newsies in the ballroom got down when the shots were fired, and all the LE officers in the room stood up. CC, JSM
Fox's Jacqui Heinrich, who is going to be the next president of the Correspondents Association, just said "I never expected to be crawling in a ball gown tonight."
Excellent trigger discipline on the part of the USSS, by the way. About a dozen mofos cleared leather on the dude, but no one shot, because they would have had to shoot toward the ballroom and the president. CC, JSM
"Excellent trigger discipline on the part of the USSS, by the way. About a dozen mofos cleared leather on the dude, but no one shot, because they would have had to shoot toward the ballroom and the president."
There were (reportedly) 4 shots. Who was shooting and what was he shooting at?
Mr. T and doctrev: Are you saying the shooter's "white" seriously, or ironically? Because his teacher portrait makes it clear that he he's not so much "black" - he's quite pale - as mixed-race, with features typical of someone with one-quarter or one-eighth African ancestry. Not in fact a stereotypical white man.
"Free Speech question for the Althouse community: Should I lose my license to practice law because I criticized the Knox County Sheriff based upon publicly available information and the fact that I had the written consent of the Knox County Board?" Umm ... No. You shouldn't. But I suspect there is something else involved.
I am hoping, Achilles, that at least a few of the Democrats - the few who have an admittedly tenuous hold on reality - use this as an opportunity to tone down the hateful vitriol, insane, inexcusable behavior and show some leadership, loyalty to and affection for America.
Heather Heyer’s family should be fielding legal teams to sue the SPLC right now. She died when James Alex Fields Jr. drove his car into the crowd of demonstrators at the Charlottesville march in 2017. The dozen people who were injured as well should be suing SPLC also.
“I knew he would do that. That’s what I voted for, a dude who will use an attempt on his life to sell his vision.“ A dude who never lets anything get in his way. A dude who is goal oriented no matter what the circumstances are - even when his own life is in danger.
Forgetting politics, you had to feel for RFK Jr. He had been sitting in a place where it looked a bit harder to get him out fast. The agents had to practically carry him over at least one table.
He looked decades older and lost in far too many pasts.
If the plaintiff group in the WH ballroom case was composed of halfway decent people, they’d dismiss the case today. But that won’t happen because…… Trump.
The shooter’s neighbor said the guy “is on the spectrum.” The defense begins.
And more likely than not, the shooter drove through Nebraska on his way to DC.
"She died when James Alex Fields Jr. drove his car into the crowd of demonstrators at the Charlottesville march in 2017. The dozen people who were injured as well should be suing SPLC also."
I'm all for anyone suing the SPLC. Fields was sentenced to life for panicking and hitting someone while trying to flee a bunch of antifa attacking him in his car. He should have gone to jail but it vehical manslaughter not 1st degree murder. He got life in jail because of his politics.
As for Heyer, she was antifa and showed up to "Punch Nazis" . Like the crazy lesbian who took on ICE in Minneapolis things didn't turn out as she expected. When you decide to incite violence you're not always safe.
The wouldbee assassian is black and 10-1 he's Gay. Another weirdo loner and a school teacher. Wow, shocking. How he was allowed to bring guns, knives etc into the hotel and assemble them in his hotel room is anyone's guess.
There seems to be endless supply of weirdo violent Leftists with nothing to do with their lives except try to kill people they don't like. The Left seems to give them a place to feel wanted and special. They used to have a phrase "He found a home in the Army" for losers who joined an organization that gave their lives meaning. I guess that's what the liberal/left does.
For the past ten years, I've been waiting for some pyscho leftists politican or journalist to use their special status to take a shot at Trump. Thankfully, it hasn't happened.
Something I did not know but found out tonight: if you have a business you have to make your website ADA compliant (“actively implementing improvements to achieve full compliance for blind and low-vision users”)
It'd be a lot better for all of us, if instead of capturing these assassians the SS would simply shoot them. maybe we'd have fewer assassians if they knew they'd be paying with their lives.
Cole Tomas (T.) Allen, the 31-year-old of Torrance, California, is registered as No Party Preference (NPP) in Los Angeles County. Somehow that appears a to be appropriate.
Blake Neff @BlakeSNeff · 4h The left will simultaneously stand outside an event with signs promoting political murder, hysterically scream about impending fascism, do podcast interviews explaining why political murder is justified, and explain why assassination victims had it coming, then also confidently declare that when one of their own takes them literally and attempts an assassination, that it must be staged.
I’m glad everyone’s fine, no one seriously injured. There is one overlooked casualty, though. Trump’s roasting speech of the media apparently will be relegated to an archive somewhere. That is sad.
A bit pedantic but, per Steve Sailer, Cole Tomas Allen is (was?) employed by a test prep and tutoring company so saying he's a teacher is using a pretty loose definition of the term. He also noted that such an employment trajectory as bit downwardly mobile for a CalTech computer science grad.
“wendybar, if you cared about violent rhetoric you would call out Achilles when he speaks the same thing here.“ Nonsense. Calling people names isn’t violent rhetoric.
Begley, does the NE Bar have some rule about not impugning the character of other bar members? Is that what they're trying to do you for?
The new DA in SF has been done for that. She obviously survived it professionally.
Reminds me of the rule in the House of Commons that you can't call another MP a liar. Two Reform Party members have been kicked out of the chamber for calling Starmer a liar. The Tory leader danced very close by saying "I'm not going to call the Prime Minister a liar...." CC, JSM
Really the nerve. People on the left are breaking laws, threatening ICE agents, keying Teslas, ripping people’s MAGA hats off their heads - criticize your lefties. But I’ll tell you why you don’t - you’re as afraid if them as everyone else.
Maxine Waters: 2018: “If you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere.”
Mark said... wendybar, if you cared about violent rhetoric you would call out Achilles when he speaks the same thing here.
4/26/26, 5:06 AM
But you see Marky....Achilles wasn't standing outside where an assassination attempt just happened, with a sign spewing Progressive hate chant "DEATH TO ALL OF THEM" like one of YOU people did last night...
Eva Marie said... “If security is the paramount concern, the White House ballroom should be built somewhere other than the White House.” "Is that a joke?"
“How in the Bleeding Hell did someone smuggle a gun into an event filled with top administration officials? I guess we won’t know for a while, but it is another black eye for thec secret Service.”
The alleged shooter was apparently a guest of the hotel. And apparently, the ballroom there is hard to secure from hotel guests, according to Josh Blackman at Volokh.
A week ago, we had the Big Guy spend the night at his namesake hotel in Las Vegas. And the SS was out in force, along with the LVMPD. And, yes, I have had a gun (or two) in the same building that the President is in, including an AR-!5 (short barreled) pistol. And know someone who had a couple of legal machine guns there, and knew how to use them. Though hotel guests aren’t supposed to be armed, there might be hundreds of firearms in the hotel, at the annual SHOT show (Jr was a regular there).
Non-employees, who weren’t staying there, were banned from the premises while the BG was there. Hotel security was working extra shifts for just this reason - identifying hotel guests and employees.
The guy was a hotel guest. The gun-check security perimeter was diminished significantly for what may be the first time right to the entrance to the 'crappy banquet hall,' a very accurate description. Still, they excelled.
Every other First-World country and even well-enough-off third-world hellholes have better protected leadership residences with size-appropriate facilities for hosting such events. The White House has not been size and protection adequate for more than half a century.
Mark said... wendybar, that could be Achilles wishing death on all the journalists as he has done on this blog in the past.
Trump could be Hitler. But he isn’t. And Achilles wasn’t wishing death to journalists. Start living in the real world instead of the world of your imagination.
Mark, I always know when someone on the right has been violently attacked because lefties come out of the woodwork asking for apologies from conservatives about sone perceived past slight. You folks are such predictable jerks.
But also true that as a republic, we have a tradition of presidents going out to events to participate in that res publica. You have your annual Widget Salesmen Convention and you decide one year to invite the President, and then surprise, he accepts. That's a deep American tradition. Would be a shame to let bad guys make us abandon it.
One of the chief drawbacks of protecting a temporary site like a journalists' or widget salesmen's convention is that you can't really build obstacles. The WH complex not only has lots of officers - the entrances are built with turnstiles, rotating subway-type gates, and other physical barriers. The fence has been jumped, but very few times, by rather fit people (or walked through by very tiny people). And even that has been improved.
In contrast, at a temporary site, all you really have are agents and officers acting as defensemen, helped by some ropelines or temporary curtains to suggest which way people are supposed to go. Every so often they will zig instead of zag and a bad guy will get through.
Now just like we improved onstage security by bringing glass to every outdoor or even just big indoor site, you could improve the security of entrances by bringing stuff like those 8-foot climb-resistant mesh fence sections, or water-fillable plastic barriers, or maybe even portable turnstiles, to every site. But that will increase cost and prep time. And make your events look like bunkers. And it still won't be foolproof: 2 or 3 bad guys could do the "give me a boost" thing to get one over the fence, for example. Your average DC teenager can vault the turnstile. Etc.
The idea you can make something 100% safe is an idea of the left. It is a fond thing, and vain. CC, JSM
Even though it’s called the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the event is not a government function. It’s a private fundraiser for journalism scholarships and awards, organized by the WHCA — a nonprofit group of reporters who cover the White House. Because it’s a private event with hundreds of journalists, celebrities, and officials, it’s been held for decades at large venues like the Washington Hilton. There’s no rule saying it couldn’t be held at the White House, but logistically it would be nearly impossible — too many people, too much security, and it’s not a government-sponsored event. The President an invited guest. The President is formally invited by the WHCA each year. The WHCA president explicitly said they were “happy the president has accepted our invitation and look forward to hosting him.” Security at this event was sorely lacking especially with final entry into the room, that will be investigated. The WHCD is not government event unless everything is changed up..To be cont.... SECURITY ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL it will come out the flaws in the coverage but always after the fact. Trump uninjured after security incident at White House correspondents dinner; no injuries reported (AP News)

This is the society they want to create, and have created in Calif, Mn, NY etc. And not one of them can defend the policies they promote. NOT ONE
It is always 6th grade insults, and talking points given to them by their masters. disgusting scum, all of you who promote death and destruction fueled by hate. fuck you
The SS is doing a wonderful job, for a DEI, feminist infused institution. that's sarcasm for the leftists.

Shots fired at Correspondents Dinner. Trump rushed out. Video

Leftist loons are already sure it was all staged. Are we surprised?

But a federal judge won’t allow that. Reasons.

Protestor who attempted to ram President Trump’s vehicle motorcade while the shooting took place tonight at WHCD was wearing a Keffiyeh.
If this was a Muslim inspired shooting by a Palestinian or Iranian, people must be made to pay severely.
Related or unrelated to the shooting? Makes a difference. In many ways.
Now that the gunman has been apprehended, I'm going to put my first amendment pocket square back in.

No security screen to get into the hotel only to get into the dinner. So someone could have walked into the hotel with a bomb.

CC, JSM

Why?
Democrats have proven over and over that they are violent evil murderous pieces of shit and nothing ever happens to them.
That last one was a joke, Eva Marie. 😬
"Democrats have proven over and over that they are violent evil murderous pieces of shit and nothing ever happens to them."
You left out their fondness for engaging in fraud. And nothing ever happens to them for that, either.
And the left's response to this has been entirely predictable. He deserved it and/or it was staged.
I am hoping, Achilles, that at least a few of the Democrats - the few who have an admittedly tenuous hold on reality - use this as an opportunity to tone down the hateful vitriol, insane, inexcusable behavior and show some leadership, loyalty to and affection for America.
I have a dream…
Democrats were caught red handed not just lying about what Trump said about Charlottesville, but also about paying both sides to be there.
The democrats bought the tiki torches and they paid for all of the failing neo-nazi groups.
All so they could justify killing Trump and persecuting us. Ann wont talk about any of that.
But Democrats have nothing to fear from any of you people.
It is sad to watch people get outraged at this and clutch their pearls. There is no common ground with anyone who still supports the Democrat part.
“They need to finish the White House ballroom and hold the event there where it will be secure and not trapped in some dingy basement ballroom.”
If security is the paramount concern, the White House ballroom should be built somewhere other than the White House.
Heather Heyer’s family should be fielding legal teams to sue the SPLC right now. She died when James Alex Fields Jr. drove his car into the crowd of demonstrators at the Charlottesville march in 2017. The dozen people who were injured as well should be suing SPLC also.
“If security is the paramount concern, the White House ballroom should be built somewhere other than the White House.”
Is that a joke?

I knew he would do that. That’s what I voted for, a dude who will use an attempt on his life to sell his vision.

You want to explain that?
“I knew he would do that. That’s what I voted for, a dude who will use an attempt on his life to sell his vision.“
A dude who never lets anything get in his way. A dude who is goal oriented no matter what the circumstances are - even when his own life is in danger.
If security is the paramount concern, the White House ballroom should be built somewhere other than the White House.
You got a place in mind more secure than the White House?

There's Cheyenne Mountain, I guess.
Forgetting politics, you had to feel for RFK Jr. He had been sitting in a place where it looked a bit harder to get him out fast. The agents had to practically carry him over at least one table.

Gadfly, that’s low even for you.
It'd be a lot better for all of us, if instead of capturing these assassians the SS would simply shoot them. maybe we'd have fewer assassians if they knew they'd be paying with their lives.

The left will simultaneously stand outside an event with signs promoting political murder, hysterically scream about impending fascism, do podcast interviews explaining why political murder is justified, and explain why assassination victims had it coming, then also confidently declare that when one of their own takes them literally and attempts an assassination, that it must be staged.

wendybar, if you cared about violent rhetoric you would call out Achilles when he speaks the same thing here.
“The shooter’s neighbor said the guy “is on the spectrum.” The defense begins.“
Thinking you can rush past a USSS post and get to your quarry is clearly not a Mensa level strategy.
“wendybar, if you cared about violent rhetoric you would call out Achilles when he speaks the same thing here.“
Nonsense.
Let’s not forget disrupting church proceedings, murdering peaceful leaders on the right, attacking synagogues.
People were afraid to put Menorahs in their windows, wear Trump shirts, - and you lefties said nothing. Fix your Democrat Party.

He didn't think it through, did he. Typical.
Hotel security was working extra shifts for just this reason - identifying hotel guests and employees.
wendybar, that could be Achilles wishing death on all the journalists as he has done on this blog in the past.
Buckham Palace: 15 times larger than the White House. France, Spain, Vatican City ... The list goes on, no matter how hard AI tries to conceal it.

Trump could be Hitler. But he isn’t. And Achilles wasn’t wishing death to journalists.

Mark, I always know when someone on the right has been violently attacked because lefties come out of the woodwork asking for apologies from conservatives about sone perceived past slight. You folks are such predictable jerks.

Trump is paying for the ballroom and the corrupt evil vile shit left and their corrupt judges have tantrums.
True that we need the big EW ballroom.
