An artist can use a panoramic format (a wide, sweeping view) to create a landscape that feels like a real place from a distance, but as you get closer, the details dissolve into the "abstract impressionist" style—thick palette knife strokes, drips, and patches of color that don't actually look like trees or rocks."

This anecdote comes from a 2002 NASA oral history interview with Cleave. Early in her time at Johnson Space Center, right after the Shuttle program was ramping up (and the program was short-staffed), veteran astronaut John W. Young (who had commanded the Shuttle’s maiden voyage, STS-1) personally assigned her a critical task: fix the Shuttle’s toilet (known as "the head"), which had failed on the first flight and was a major life-support issue.
Cleave, whose expertise was in sanitary/environmental engineering (dealing with fluid flow, pipes, Reynolds numbers, etc.), responded by noting that she was used to working on the other end of the pipe (i.e., wastewater treatment on the ground, not spacecraft sanitation systems).
Young replied: “You’re a smart girl. You’ll figure this out.” And handed her the assignment.
She did figure it out—leading a “tiger team” (a focused problem-solving group) that resolved the issue. In the same interview, she recounted how this made her one of the first in her astronaut class to get a “real job,” and how she’d introduce herself at press conferences as “Mary Cleave, sanitary engineer,” drawing puzzled looks from reporters expecting fighter pilots and test pilots. She jokingly earned nicknames like “first space plumber” or the “sanitary fairy.”
Whatever happens in Iran, one thing is for certain: the word 'decimated' is a casualty.
Everyone on all sides has been throwing it around as a synonym for total destruction. When of course it literally means a 10% loss. Which can sometimes be a pretty good day in war. I remember Army training standards that listed 'no more than 10% casualties" as one measure of success.
Heck, the Romans decimated themselves, as group punishment for underperforming legions. The 90% of guys remaining would be more motivated to accomplish the mission.
I guess we can say 'decimate' has been decimated....CC, JSM
Watching High and Low. Just amazing, particularly the first half. Arguably Mifune’s finest performance. The emotional stress that he is under. Wow. He absolutely refuses to pay that ransom. Or so he says.
There’s a big drop-off in the second half, when Mifune disappears, and it becomes a police procedural. Later in the movie, we see him cutting the grass. And he’s so happy. He’s a free man.
It’s a flawed masterpiece. But probably the strongest Kurosawa movie set in the modern era.

God has a sense of humor, He has chosen me (LOL) to be the one to tell humanity... let this go. We know the etymology but, just like "literally", the term has come to mean it's opposite.
Decimate now means to destroy 90%.
Do I have to raise an army, ride down the Librarians, martyr myself before a convocation of English Majors? Because that seems like a lot of drama. Haec credam a deo pio? A deo iusto? A deo scito?
Regardless of what decimate meant in Latin (and perhaps even there it didn't always strictly mean “kill a tenth by lot”), today in English that meaning lies far down the list. For example, at dictionary.com: {quoting…}
decimate [des-uh-meyt]
Definition for decimate (1 of 1) verb used with object dec·i·mat·ed, dec·i·mat·ing
1. to kill or destroy a great number or proportion of: The population was decimated by a plague.
2. to greatly reduce in number or amount: From 1975-1981, our country was not driving the space exploration agenda, and our aerospace workforce was decimated.
3. to cause to suffer great loss or harm: The constant eruptions that spewed forth decimated the forest and turned it to ash.
4. to select by lot and kill every tenth person of.
5. Obsolete. to take a tenth of or from.

Rigidly requiring only the use of meaning 4 above in modern English is much like critiquing use of the word (emotional) “hysteria” because it doesn't strictly refer to a woman's uterus (hystéra in Greek).
In an expletive-laden post overnight, Donald Trump, a 'for sure crazy bastard," vowed to strike Iran's power plants and bridges if the country's leaders don't reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Waikato University Professor Al Gillespie told Radio New Zealand such actions would technically amount to war crimes, but he believed there was a deeper strategy at play.
"Madman Theory" was a strategy brought in by Nixon in an unsuccessful attempt to end the Vietnam War, Gillespie said.
The strategy involves behaving irrationally and in a threatening manner to go to extreme lengths to end a war or conflict.
"That really happened with the recent incident regarding a downed U.S. airman whose case for rescue was made that much more dangerous by a leaker on the U.S. side, who alerted the Iranian goons of his presence on Iranian soil and got them hunting for him.
But the news was not all bad. Something unexpected happened -- in a spontaneous gesture, the Iranian villagers rushed in to protect him from capture by the Revolutionary Guard goons who were looking for him to capture. It was not without risk -- some may die as a result with angry mullah goons now looking for them. But it was the price of freedom, a price they were willing to pay."

I’m always going to put Seven Samurai at the top of my Kurosawa list.
Hollywood did a remake that's pretty fun, The Magnificent Seven. Kurosawa sent Sturges a gift of a samurai sword. But there was also a behind-the-scenes battle that's pretty interesting.
I'm sure Kurosawa was flattered that Americans were copying Japanese art.
I like both movies a lot. Kurosawa's movie is slow in the beginning, at least to me. And then the finale in the rain is astounding. The western is funny and I like the music and the acting. Kurosawa is a genius and a true artist. Sturges is more of a master craftsman (and a copycat).
A couple of decades later, Kurosawa and Mifune had a major falling-out, and they refused to work together again, or even speak to each other. It's kind of like Hitchcock wrecking the career of Tippi and his own career at the same time. Kurosawa tried to kill himself at one point.
After Star Wars, George Lucas used the Force to resurrect Kurosawa's career, which is beyond cool.

That's what Hitler said about Poland, "It's there for the taking, only stupid people would turn down the opportunity?"
Remember that Trump and Hegseth were preaching from the Book of Esther on Easter weekend, you know the book that celebrates preventive genocide on the Persians, and taking the "spoils," which in this case is oil.
Franklin Graham: Thank you. Let us pray. Father, you tell us in the book of Esther that the Persians, the Iranians were wanting to kill every Jew woman, child and do it all in one day but you raised up Esther to save the Jewish people. Father, we thank you. Today the Iranians, the wicked regime of the -- of this government wants to kill every Jew and destroy them with an atomic fire.
But you have raised up President Trump. You've raised him up for such a time as this and, Father, we pray that you'll give him victory. Father, we pray for our military that you'd watch over and protect them. Father, we pray for the -- the people of Iran who want freedom to be set free from these Islamic lunatics. - Trump's prayer breakfast on Easter Sunday
Who, exactly are the religious lunatics?
There is no war crime so hideous, such as bombing women's dorms in their universities, no crime so heinous that we can't imagine that if we don't do it first, they will surely do it to us.
What Hitler did to the Germans, made them hate a race because they "controlled all of the money" which, you know, the Germans should control, is just as easy to do if a nation controls all of the oil, which, you know, we should control.
High and Low is based on Ed McBain’s 87th Precinct novel King’s Ransom. One of McBain’s best, a bit different from the movie. I watched it after seeing Spike Lee’s 2025 remake Highest 2 Lowest with Denzel Washington. Definitely not in Spike Lee’s top 10.
7 Samurai is great (inspiration for the Magnificent 7 western) as is Kurasawa in general, but I'm also exceedingly fond of Inagaki and his 3 Samurai series films, together with Chushingura (47 Ronin: my ultimate favorite samurai movie).
Samuri fans absolutely ought to watch Harakiri (1962). It's amazing.
This samurai shows up in a lord's courtyard. "I am going to kill myself in your courtyard. But first, you will hear my story." So you got to listen, right? And the tension builds and builds. What you find out is this samurai is up to something. He's got an agenda. He's really unhappy about what happened to the last samurai who showed up at this house. And there will be a reckoning.
It's a very cool movie, with awesome cinematography. One thing that's fun about Japanese samurai flicks--you hear this a lot in Kurosawa, too--is the classic Japanese score. I don't know what they're doing. They're making Japanese sounds that sound foreign as hell. "Bong. Clock. Ticka-ticka-ticka." I can't really write out Japanese music, you have to hear it.
It's a very foreign movie, with ritual suicide and the Japanese obsession with honor. But the film is also an attack on that very system. It's an attack on the samurai code and a plea for human sympathy and charity. Yet this movie attacks the samurai system like a samurai. With rigid shots and startling cuts and very little movement in the frame. The stillness in this movie is disquieting, because there's so much tension. The film is a study in tension. And that music is amazing. It's such a Japanese movie. It's hard, and beautiful, and very sad.

Pooping on, pooping on the moon
Some may say
I squeeze the Charmin way too much
Or some such
And if it’s my crutch in hand

A Fistful of Dollars is a remake of Yojimbo. Spaghetti is okay but you really want to taste the ramen first.

Kurosawa's version of Shakespeare is the best I've ever seen, in my opinion. It's a very loose adaptation, of course.
The Scottish play
(not in Scotland)
High and Low is based on Ed McBain’s 87th Precinct novel King’s Ransom. One of McBain’s best, a bit different from the movie. I watched it after seeing Spike Lee’s 2025 remake Highest 2 Lowest with Denzel Washington. Definitely not in Spike Lee’s top 10.
Well they are universal themes
I'm a Zatoichi fan.
Zatoichi and the Chess Expert
Now I remember. The last pic reminds me of Akira (1988)
What do people notice first. A beautiful face or the bright red zit encamped there? Maybe I’m weird that way.
The 47 Ronin
You really got to love Japanese cinema to watch it.
