"In one particularly revealing passage from 'Good Energy,' she wrote: 'I felt myself as part of an infinite and unbroken series of cosmic nesting dolls of millions of mothers and babies before me from the beginning of life.'"

I'm reading "The danger of letting a mystic lead public health/A look at Casey Means shows the weakness of her nomination and the surgeon general position itself" (WaPo)(gift link).
The Means nomination exposes how unserious the role really is. In her book “Good Energy,” Means recounts hearing an “internal voice that whispered” to her that it was time to try psilocybin — commonly known as magic mushrooms — which she began using in 2021. She described the experience as offering “a doorway to a different reality.”...

"Internal voice that whispered"? — in other words, her thoughts. She thought it was time to try psilocybin, and presumably that worked out well for her. What is unscientific there? What about that makes her unreliable?

She was appointed by Trump. That’s the problem.

But WaPo was perfectly fine with a mentally ill transexual in the same position.

Wasn't it Jocelyn Elders who thought young boys needed to be taught how to jack off?

Mystical thinking is believing a man can wish himself into being a woman.

After the half-assed people Biden had in place, Democrats have little room to criticize anyone Trump puts up.

I've listened to multiple long interviews with Casey Means. She's quite brilliant, and also strongly opinionated. But not a mystic. She's a Trump selection and that's enough for WaPo to diminish her.
Imagine WaPo looking up to diminish anyone.

Anyway...it's not like we need a Surgeon General. But if we're to have one, I love our guy here in Florida, Dr. Joseph Ladapo. Florida's Surgeon General. He'd make heads explode nationally- for all the right reasons.

Democrats think they have a winning issue in opposing Casey Means as surgeon general. But the median voter also does not have a medical license and also has never completed a medical residency, so these things may make her more relatable.

Doctors don't respect her because she didn't finish her residency. In fact she went mental and crashed out.

Means has said she dropped out of her surgical residency in because she was frustrated and alarmed that she was cutting people open instead of "understanding why they were sick in the first place."

If that was the case, she should have completed a residency in a primary care field, such as family medicine or internal medicine and focused on preventive care and population health. And on top of that, she could have subsequently sought certification by the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine.

That she did not pursue opportunities to train in fields that focus on "understanding why they were sick in the first place" and, instead, chose not to complete her training at all, is a serious indictment of her commitment to evidence-based medicine.

Ha! Nice words to cover the reality that the modern healthcare system treats preventive medicine as an elective in which one can Minor.

The Donk world is all about credentials and credentialism. It costs a lot of money to buy your Harvard or UCLA MD, so clearly that matters far more than any concerns of the hoi polloi, who are always and everywhere suspected of the thoughtcrime of anti-intellectualism. And Trumpworld's greatest sin is always and everywhere apostasy.

As an aside, if Bezos really wants to make the world a better place, he ought to provide all the people he cans from Wapo a copy of Eric Hoffer's "The True Believer" and a mirror. Bari Weiss could do the same.

Someone who has graduated from medical school and progressed no further is not really a doctor and will have mastered only a tiny fraction of the factual knowledge and wisdom a working MD acquires in post-graduate training and throughout her career.

I’ve read accounts that Means started a residency in surgery but dropped out less than two years in. People who knew her at the time report that her stated reasons for quitting had more to do with unmanageable anxiety about her work than any philosophical rejection of allopathic medicine. That’s fine. Not everyone is cut out to be a surgeon. Having patients’ lives literally in your hands is indeed stressful. But to react to what was likely a painful personal setback by attacking the institutions that gave you any kind of a career seems pathological.

Today’s influencer culture is what creates figures like Dr. Means. (Dr. Oz is another prime example). Everyone needs to have an “edge” to gain followers, popularity, and profits, and it usually means selling snake oil and rejecting wholesale anything established. Because everyday policy is boring. I’m sure if I made “burn it down” social media videos they’d be far more popular than videos outlining the technical ways we can change our legal and justice systems.

"Trust the experts’ is not a feature of science or democracy; it’s a feature of religion and totalitarianism." ~ RFK Jr

That's the big lie right there.

Now, if you don't trust the experts, who do you trust? Some leader's gut feeling? That is authoritarianism right there.

"Read her book. Very well written. Replete with references to scientific studies."

In a chapter in her book titled “Trust Yourself, Not Your Doctor,” Dr. Means writes that “when it comes to preventing and managing chronic disease, you should not trust the medical system” (emphasis hers). She believes Americans need to lean into lifestyle changes to stop the chronic disease epidemic: whole-food diets free of added sugar and seed oils, frequent exercise, consistent sleep, decreased exposure to toxins"

Is any doctor standing in the way of anyone adopting this lifestyle?

What Means and RFK Jr are telling people won’t do anything to improve Americans health because other than the weird lies about seed oils (which are better for you than animal fats, setting aside that all cooking fats are probably not great due to the high calorie content), they’re saying absolutely basic pablum doctors have been saying for decades, with the only problem being people don’t follow them.

Earnest Prole বলেছেন...

Now, if you don't trust the experts, who do you trust?

Across the room from me, among many books of recipes, I can see the University of California’s Wellness Lowfat Cookbook, devoted to the fervent belief that saturated fat is evil and the constant consumption of carbohydrates is good. A little more than thirty years after it was published, it’s clear there was no scientific basis whatsoever for its recommendations. If experts can be wrong about the most fact of life, human metabolism, why can’t they be wrong about other things?

Howard বলেছেন...

Eat your seed oils, Little Excursion. I'm sure it's fine.

Based on the oil content of corn, it takes approximately 12 to 14 pounds of corn kernels to produce 1 quart of corn oil. While a bushel of corn (56 pounds) yields roughly 1.7 to 1.9 pounds of oil, high-efficiency industrial processes are needed to extract this amount from the germ of the kernel.
