CIA officers aren't well known until they leave the agency and write a book or go on television or get elected to something. But there are plenty of useful sources in the world of intelligence who have become well known, and were in the public eye even before their intelligence connections became known. The Cambridge Four or Five (or more) were familiar to Britons in government or journalism. Journalists have been known to have CIA or MI-5 or KGB connections. Eli Cohen, a key Mossad agent in Syria, was (under an alias) a big man on the Damascus party scene. An important advisor to Sadat who was also Nasser's son in law is also rumored to have worked with Mossad. It's unlikely that Epstein was a trusted insider in any intelligence agency, but hardly impossible that he was made use of by one (or more).
It was always obvious that Podesta was speaking in code in some of those emails. No normal English-speaking person says things like "...I am too tired tonight for cheese pizza."
Obviously the word "cheese" in that sentence is the tell because it's redundant: all pizza is cheese pizza; you only mention cheese if other toppings are being rejected, but he was responding to an email that asked if he wanted "cheese pizza" with no mention of other toppings.
So it was obvious from that email and others (for example, the "pizza associated" scarf or whatever that had a map of Italy) the question was what the code was in reference to.
The "steaks" email might be innocuous and just awkward. The mention of there only being two steaks COULD be a reference to provisions, with the number being a way of emphasizing how low the supplies were. The problem is that a normal person talking about re-stocking the larder would say ONLY "two steaks," and the phrase "new ones" is bizarre when applied to food. "Some more" or "more" is what a normal person would say.
What non-linguists don't realize is that there many unwritten rules in English that people follow without knowing that they are following them. A couple days ago Ann critiqued the less vs. fewer with regard to mass-nouns vs. count-nouns prescriptivism. Prescriptions arise initially because teachers of speech or writing are trying to help their students sound more sophisticated or authoritative by articulating unstated rules. They most commonly have to do this when a distinction starts decaying (like "contact" only applying to physical things, which I found in one Linguistics book from the '60s; or "impact" only referring to physical things, which I found in one Linguistics book from the '80s).
The steak email violates subtle distinctions about referring to items that are consumed vs. items that are replaced. We say "I need to get some more tomato sauce" rather than *"I need to get some new tomato sauce." But we do say "I need to find a new babysitter" or "I need to hire a new lawyer," which implies that the steak was code for a person of some kind.
And at this point, the obvious but disgusting answer seems the most likely one.
