Come on and find it.

ADDED: I have never been able to understand the words to that song — "Come and Get Your Love." I'm reading the words today for the first time, and I still had trouble understanding it. "Get it from the main vine"? Meade thought it was a drug reference — like "main line." And I thought it was phallic.

But Grok says: "According to explanations tied to the band—particularly co-founder Lolly Vegas (who sang lead on the track)— 'main vine' is a metaphor rooted in the band's Native American heritage (Redbone's members had Yaqui, Shoshone, and other Indigenous ancestry). It symbolizes Mother Earth or the primary, fundamental source of life, love, and spiritual connection."

The line I used for the post title is: "What's the matter with your mind.... Nothing the matter with your head, baby, find it/Come on and find it...." The chorus makes it clear that "it" is love. Whether that's sexual love or something grandly spiritual is in the ears of the listener.

"Love" is the all-purpose word. It can mean everything and so means nothing.

Red, aka, Native American. Bone, aka, heh heh, heh heh.

I always assumed the song is about one lover noticing another is not mentally feeling well, as in unhappy or depressed, perhaps with themselves. The singer is telling them they have love, and if the unhappy person wants it, just come and get it.

Sort of like that woman holding the baby and crying. You could see her attitude change as meaning she wants to have lots of sex, because that's how you have babies. Or you could see it as she wants to have the shared love between a mom and child. Or you could assume she sees the child as a tax deduction, future labor, and a shot at welfare. Your interpretation says less about the person being interpreted and more about you.

I always assumed it meant come and get your blueberry pancake. While it’s still hot.

Althouse, those are some impressive stone steps you deal with to get to what must be one of your favorite vantage points to take photos of the sunrise. I'm a few years older than you and I'm at the "look down" stage when I descend those kind of stairways. Be safe!!

Since my son was little (he's 19 now) whenever I make him his lunch, either for school or at home, I sing the chorus of that song as "Come and get your lunch!"

Don't really have to delve into native spirituality for the vine metaphor. "I Heard It Thru The Grapevine" was about 10 years before. CC, JSM

They've been covered in ice and snow for the last couple months. They were much easier today.

Thanks for the pancake, Meade.

Here in Oklahoma, a big casino uses that song for a television commercial, with the lyrics changed to "come and get your luck!" Don't really know how that affects this discussion but, well, there you go.

That is an insanely good video, props for rising earlier, braving the elements, and capturing that amazing scene.

But my one critique is that I hated that song (from AM radio overplay) as a kid, then had to endure it again when the movie Guardians of the Galaxy resurrected it.

It’s about sex.

In which we learn today the coded sex talk between Ann and Meade.

And there's the remake by Real McCoy in the 90s. Not bad at all ...

I didn't realize that disco song was from Redbone. It's surprisingly upbeat. I was more familiar with their political songs, "We Were All Wounded at Wounded Knee" and "Wovoka," both downers.

Some of the band's members were Mexican-American, and so "native" in some sense, but not in another.

Nowadays I can't not see Chris Pratt on Morag dancing around and singing into a lizard microphone when I hear that song.

bagoh20 বলেছেন...

All this innuendo, and metaphors and symbolism just confuses me. I thought I knew it once, but now I have no idea what this thing is people call "sex". It's very mysterious. Anybody have a link that explains it clearly? I'm a visual learner.

Ficta বলেছেন...

Yep. This song absolutely reads as Chris Pratt singing into a lizard for me at this point. Always makes me smile.

Yep. when every phone conversation with any body ends with "love you", cheapens it. Kinda like "fuck" becoming so common. Removes much of the value.

Guardians of the Galaxy resurrected this song.

"Its about Sex" "Its about drugs"

Pretty much covers 90 percent of 60s and 70s Rock n' roll.

RCOCEAN II বলেছেন...

I love how Althouse wants to "understand the lyrics". Half the time you can't even understand what Rock and Roll lyrics are. No Rock and roller was ever accused of "Over Pronunciation"

The other thing is that people dont remember most of the lyrics. That's why "Born in the USA" is considered patriotic. People just like belting out "Born in the USA". Same with "Here comes the sun" most people remember the first three lines - after that.... a blank.

Leland বলেছেন...

Alton Brown offers another option than pancakes.

One hand I get upset at the Pro-Indian nonsense because its just another way for the Left to attack White American. OTOH, we all have positive feelings toward "native Americans" because they seem cool and were here first.

The whole "Lo, the poor Indians" has been going on for a long time. "last of the mohicans" was 1830s. US Grant was talking about helping the poor indians in his 1872 inaugural.

I've noticed whenever I try to interject some realism in discussion of native americans (Lived for years next to a reservation), boomers would get upset. They want to believe they are the only ones who recognize the plight of the "poor indians" and how we "Stole their land".

narciso বলেছেন...

Its a catchy song, which i had never heard of before guardians

I had no idea it had any indian identification

I’ve always liked that song (I don’t even remember it being in Guardians) but I never paid attention to the lyrics. I usually don’t—voice is just another instrument to me.
