"There’s just mutual headshaking. It’s like you lock eyes and you shake heads and you move on"/"It’s a sense of betrayal, like, who are you? Were you always like this? I don’t know you anymore!"

Said unnamed acquaintances of Cheryl Hines, quoted in "Cheryl Hines’s MAGA Makeover Has Her Hollywood Colleagues Scratching Their Heads: 'I Don’t Know You Anymore!'/'It’s a sense of betrayal, like, who are you?' says one industry insider, of the Curb Your Enthusiasm star and wife of RFK" (Vanity Fair).
“Whatever her reasons for staying with that weird, imbecilic husband and whether or not she subscribes to his inane positions is of no real consequence,” [an unnamed "Hollywood heavyweight"] says disdainfully. "It isn’t as though we’re talking about Zendaya, whom one would desperately want to get into their movie.'...
One of the few close pals to publicly speak up about Hines in the Trump 2.0 era is Tig Notaro, who once cohosted a podcast with Hines called Tig and Cheryl: True Story.... “My friendship with Cheryl predated her marriage to Bobby.... And then he endorsed Trump, and then it just got hard.... It’s really sad, because Cheryl did bring me so much joy.”..
Sometimes it seems like Hines is living out some dementedly cringed-out Curb episode, where ordinary events spiral out of control. As Notaro pointed out, it was one thing when RFK Jr. was a free-floating conspiracy theorist (“a gnat on the arm,” as she put it); it’s quite another now that he wields so much power over the health of the American populace.

Remember how sometimes the rule is you never — ever — liken a person to an insect? That rule comes and goes, but I will deal with my dismay by savoring the small pleasure of using the "insect politics" tag one more time.

Try this AI prompt (I did): Tell me about the idea that it is very wrong to compare a human being to an insect, that once you start saying people are gnats or flies or something in need of swatting, you're going down a slippery slope to Auschwitz... or something like that.

When I was in high school I had no idea about the inner dynamics of the varsity cheerleading squad, although I was vaguely aware that some of them had boyfriends on the football team.

It's discouraging to think my youthful interest in Greek mythology was some sort of functional equivalent.

In all fairness to myself, that episode of Star Trek where Apollo is a real live spaceman was pretty awesome.

The class politics interests me more than their continual violations of alleged norms that they selectively apply as needed. The enforcers of class and status really want to other Hines, taken at face value because she will not divorce at their command.

This bullying is so typical of the left it is reported without comment here. Telling. And if accuracy means anything then MAHA is the subject, not MAGA, and the term is specifically misused so as to inflame their leftist readers even more.

I am reminded of the reaction of former friends when someone leaves one religious community for another. Yesterday they sang his praises; today no accusation is too vile to make. They are willing to believe the worst of their former friend. It's cult-like behavior.

And of course the progressives loved RFK Jr. when he was a gadfly bugging the Establishment and encouraging lefty proto-hippies to be skeptical of vaccines. My lefty nieces loved him “speaking truth to power.”

But now he is in power and the same truth is not so palatable anymore. He must be smeared, tagged with the hated MAGA red letter and now no democrat anywhere in America is saying “follow the science.”

So many people claim to be free and independent (“I don’t live by other’s rules”) but they are clearly in bondage to what other people think and say, because they don’t want to, themselves, be cast out of the crowd. They do what they want when it comes to living God‘s laws and their status as his friend, but they certainly don’t do what they want when it comes to losing their status or membership in the local “in group”. They’ve build their house on the sand of shifting popular opinion and the fleeting whims of others around them.

"Remember how sometimes the rule is you never — ever — liken a person to an insect?" Nicely put: for progs, "sometimes" the rule is to do the right thing, i.e., only when convenient. For progs, rules are handy suggestions, to be used at will.

As the post implies and other comments have already noted, the Hines treatment also nicely illustrates politics-ueber-alles Trump-allergic prog intolerance. Can't speak for Hines, but it's just possible that she loves her husband more than the former friends who so eagerly denounce her and him.

I don't know about the "insects" thing, Althouse. It's not dehumanizing to call someone a "pest," or to say they're "busy as a bee." Or to say to an adversary, "I'll squish you like a bug!" Or to describe someone as "bug-eyed." None of that is beyond the pale.

It's really the cockroach slur that gets you on the downward slope to Auschwitz.

I asked that and then asked a follow-up: Now do "clump of cells" "parasite", etc. for the unborn.

Summary from Grok:

Final Answer

Yes — calling the unborn “clump of cells,” “parasite,” or “tissue” is a textbook form of dehumanization.
It’s not “just science.”
It’s moral disengagement.
It enables the largest-scale termination of human life in history (~1.5 billion abortions globally since 1980).

The same warning applies:

Once you stop calling a human a human, anything becomes permissible.

I've seen a few bits of Cheryl Hines on podcasts, recently. The latest was on Tucker Carlson. She seems to be doing well, if a little weary of the inquiries about her old "friends."
