Angela Rayner, the Deputy PM of the UK, just resigned from that post and her position as Housing Minister, although she is keeping her seat in the Commons. She caught herself in a taxation problem over a second home, and reported it to the ethics advisory body. When the advisors replied with "yup, you were wrong," she followed the practice of almost every constitutional country but ours and resigned.

She was the Housing Minister, and perhaps should have had more care on issues so close to her bailiwick. But she is also not the typical Oxbridge pol: she left school at 16 with a baby and without any O-levels, and came up through the ranks of the trade unions and the Labour Party. She did get some kind of legal advice when she bought the second home, as she was in the middle of a divorce and was also caring for a special-needs child. Unfortunately, the legal advice boiled down to "we think it's okay, but we're not specialists in this area, so you should get more legal advice to be sure." Which she never did.

The old-time Labour voter might sympathize with being an unsophisticated person caught in a web of sophisticated rules. But of course those are no longer the main body of Labour voters.

I think Rayner could have just said "look, mate, I haven't seen anything I've signed since I was 14." (just do an image search for her) RR, JSM

"When the advisors replied with "yup, you were wrong," she followed the practice of almost every constitutional country but ours and resigned."

That's because we have public servants here. And by "public servant", I mean people who believe that their jobs/positions belong to them and there's nothing the public has to say about that.

Plus... it's really cool to be able to order that "public" about, as if they were- you know- servants.

Somebody here pointed out the Ken Burns Hemingway documentary, and I bought it and gave it a watch. You know there was a huge irony pointed out in that series, there was a clip of John McCain, the master of war, in the Dylan sense, describing how he was inspired to be just like Robert Jordan, in For Whom the Bell Tolls. You know who else was inspired by that book? Who read it to his men when they were organizing their armies in the mountains? Fidel Castro. Hemingway is considered a national hero in Cuba, because Castro took a lot of his tactics from scenes described in that book. So the book, intended as a condemnation of war, ended up inspiring soldiers to fight.

It's like the movie Slapshot, it was supposed to be a takedown of hockey, but hockey fans love that movie. I guess, like the song says, you never can tell.

The fast movement of the Moonlight Sonata on two guitars. It's surprising that anybody would think to try it and it's not done badly.

The thing is that the woman spent a lot of time on makeup for her face, and it doesn't fit with the sort of equality in the music. A musical mistake.

Jaq বলেছেন...

At the time, the serious left threatened Hemingway, because he wrote some brutally honest things about the communists in that book, and they told him that if he kept it up, he would start getting bad reviews, but then Castro used it as a "how to" and voila! Like I said, "you never can tell."

BTW, Hemingway was pretty uncomfortable with the honor of being a hero of the revolution. He liked Cuba the way it was before the revolution, even as he would have been a welcome guest after.

China's Xi steals the limelight in a defiant push against US-led world order ~ BBC

The outlines of an effective illiberal alliance under Chinese leadership are coming into view. Such an alliance, centered on authoritarian powers, will counter the democratic alliance and possibly surpass it as an ordering force in global geopolitics and influence.

What is the central attractive force of the authoritarian alliance? To free member states from unilateral economic aggression by a now hyper-nationalist US and its sanctions and tariffs and trade retaliatory measures. American is perceived as an agent of economic instability. China poses itself as a constructive force for stability.

Where is the American response? The American vision? To ask is almost to answer the question. Fractured, disjointed, incoherent.

Trump is ignorant and instinctive. Primal comes to mind. His principal foreign policy envoy is inept. His secretary of state/national security adviser is servile. This is an overall foreign policy posture with nothing but failure before it -- a path to global retreat, retrenchment, and failure. If America fails to support a now unified Europe in its support of Ukraine staying out of the shadow of Russian suzerainty, then America is done as a global power with any meaningful influence in the entire eastern hemisphere. Kaput.

Other points --

One notices the other authoritarians are standing back from Iran and obviously have little interest in empowering radical islam that is a key feature--and weakness--of the Iranian regime. They align but do not embrace.

Behind all of this is China's emergence as the world's dominant manufacturing power probably presaging its eventual rise to global preeminent economy. If it can orchestrate a new paradigm of international cooperation as western-led multilateral institutions and alliances atrophy under American negligence, then China will be global leader as the US retreats back into its North American quadrant. The western community will have lost its coherence. Mega Maga kaput!

We strengthened China greatly when we drove Russia into their waiting arms. China+Russia have all the resources that they need to survive. We can't blockade them with our navy, they have a huge common border. There was a writer MacKinder, who explained all of this. Joe Biden created the China monster. This is the result of our jihad against Russia.

China is sticking by Russia because China knows that they are next. Russia is sticking by China and North Korea because we cast them out of the West. We have played our hand on a losing path for decades. Sure, Trump might be the guy in power when the consequences of Joe Biden goading Russia to invade Ukraine become manifest.

China just signed a deal for a new pipeline with Russia through Mongolia and will be buying all of the cheap gas that Russia used to sell to Europe before the pipeline was blown up, while Europe pays double the cost, for LNG. We play every hand wrong, Europe opposes Trump at every turn, and just digs the hole deeper. Their plan is to borrow their way to prosperity. Good luck.

Here's my comment on "America was founded on slavery" etc. Just substitute the word "amid" for "on." Amid a world which accepted slavery, America was founded on the proposition that all men are created equal. It isn't surprising that remnants and intrusions from the past amid which the country was founded lingered on.

Pro Publica reports that Bill Pulte, the Federal Housing Finance Agency director, has been accusing Trump opponents of mortgage fraud, while saying nothing about three of Trump’s Cabinet members calling multiple homes their primary residences on mortgages.

Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer entered into two primary-residence mortgages in quick succession, including for a second home near a country club in Arizona, where she’s known to vacation.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has primary residences with mortgages in New Jersey and Washington, D.C.

Lee Zeldin, the Environmental Protection Agency administrator, has a primary residence mortgage in Long Island and another in Washington, D.C., according to loan records.

And I would think that U.S. Senators and Representatives from both parties are likely claiming D.C area properties as primary mortgages while continuing to receive favorable tax benefits from properties in their home states,

US businesses have financed China’s explosive military growth over the past few decades (read: sold out America). The seeds were planted by Nixon and Kissinger. The only way to slow this freight train down is economically. China’s economy is on the edge. Add in their looming demographic problem and we have an opportunity to stick a fork in Xi Jinping Pong. Tariff the living snot out him.

PSA on strewed with hurts: A few days ago, the Prof posted about the Father Ted writer arrested in UK for incitement. Included in the article was a quote from opposition leader Kemi Badenoch on “hurty words.” The Prof then went down an etymological rabbit hole, to include of course the OED, which gives a second meaning for “hurt” as a heraldic dot, and gave an example of a coat of arms “strewed over with hurts.” I suggested that this would make a good masthead motto, and the Prof honored me forever by adopting it. Jamie বলেছেন...

I am feeling frustrated this morning. As I've said elsewhere, my husband's brother and his wife stopped speaking to us (or being in the same room as we are) after the election. Yet... as an example of how things have changed... when their daughter, now almost 8, was born, they followed their crunchy-granola pediatrician's recommendation to "extend" her vaccination regime - not to load up the newborn immune system with so much work all at once.

(I should add that I was a preschool director for seven years or so; "We plan to vaccinate later" or "on a longer schedule" was a common statement from parents who pretty clearly had no intent to vaccinate their kids but didn't want to claim a religious exemption in order to gain entry to school. And further - my brother- and sister-in-law "got married" on a beach in Costa Rica, in no way legally - I know; I officiated and am neither a Catholic priest (obviously) nor a lawyer, the only two professions allowed to marry people in CR at that time, in any case - telling their interested parents that they'd regularize their union at the courthouse when they got back to the US. Of course they never did. So who knows about their daughter's vaccination status?)

Furthermore - my BIL has (or, at this point, possibly "had") very close friends who were legal immigrants from Mexico; they, and because of them, he, were rabidly anti-illegal immigration.

And FURTHERmore - these In-laws of mine are solidly from the working class. My BIL has started several small businesses, each of which has survived for a time but eventually foundered on the rocks of venture capital; my SIL, with no college, worked her way up from floor worker to regional buyer for a major department store, then jumped to the trade side and is now director of marketing for a well-known fashion house. Now, admittedly, she's very worried about how the tariffs will affect the house and her employment (it's Korean, and I have this information second hand since I am persona non grata). But both of them understand the economics of working for a wage in a way that the so-called "elites" do not.

Yet they have entered a pact with several of their friends to cut out all Republicans from their lives. So it's us, most of my SIL's family, very possibly my BIL's best friend and his family... But for the life of us, we don't understand their beef.

Hope those friends - parents of their little daughter's school friends, LA people who think awfully well of themselves - don't set their faces against something these two don't want to go along with. Now, one set of friends we made through our kids remain very close to us now - but if I had to choose between "I'll alienate my family to stay on the good side of these people I met four years ago" and "I'd better maintain the longest relationships of my life; my new friends will probably be ok with that," I know what I'd go with.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

It looks to me like gadfly (2:13am) is repeating a slanderous lie about Lee Zeldin's primary residence. Here's what Zeldin wrote on Twitter (link):

"It’s as if @ProPublica didn’t hear me the first few times…or maybe they are just simply lying hacks.

"I had a primary residence in NY from 2007-2024 when I left active duty.

"Then, my primary residence CHANGED TO DC this past year when I became EPA Administrator.

"The process was completed precisely by the book, notifying my mortgage companies, insurance company and local government of the CHANGE TO MY PRIMARY RESIDENCE.

"CHANGE 👏 TO 👏 MY 👏 PRIMARY 👏 RESIDENCE

"This is exactly why trust in the media is in the toilet. Paint a dishonest spin job with 5% of the background and then ignore the other 95%."

I find Zeldin's explanation extremely plausible, since obviously someone's primary residence can change, so having two different primary residences over a period of time is not illegal. Also because unscrupulous political writers (a group that certainly includes gadfly) will gladly write faleshoods because they're too lazy to look up the boring truth when they can print the garish lies.

I suspect the other two are equally innocent, but if either or both was cheating, by all means throw the book at them. But do your homework first.

A Vietnam-generation officer (which means he was born in the 1940s) told a bunch of us about how he grew up in a small town that used to have a Kraut POW camp. The POWs were rented out to farmers and businesses who had lost their labor forces to the military. One POW worked at the town lumber yard, in spite of the fact he had lost a hand and had one of those "Best Years of Our Lives" hooks instead.

So Fritz wound up romancing the lumber yard owner's daughter. After the war he got a visa to come back and resume work at the lumber yard, and married the daughter. He and the daughter wound up inheriting the business. A little while after that, he started adding to the lumber yard's ads and signs:

"OWNED AND OPERATED BY A VETERAN OF WORLD WAR II."

The local VFW and Legion guys, who were all his buddies, quickly straightened him out on that. RR, JSM

His lawyer says, "Your Honor, I'd like to ask you to be lenient on my client, who is a decorated combat veteran of World War II."

A veteran himself, the judge asks the landlord, "What unit were you with?"

'Ze Ninez Panzer, Your Honor.'

It ought to be true.
