Why are we even reading these texts? They are evidence in a pending criminal case. They should be counter intelligence information in an investigation to root out domestic terrorists.

There is some dispute about this. It may be that it is a transcription error: should be "I" instead of "he." If it's "he," then who is "he?" Presumably a conspirator, though some say it may be a reference to another trans shooter. If "I" then that certainly implicates the lover. My guess is that it doesn't really matter as they likely have a lot of other communications that will be released at the appropriate time.
Time stamps might be relevant along with the times details arose last Wednesday. My memory was that the gun was found fairly quickly and that fact was announced pretty quickly even if not the details about the gun and the ammunition.
IfWalsh is right, it might be shown that Robinson already knew the gun had been recovered and knew that he wasn't going to get away with it and only then wrote the texts to the roommate. If it really was a ruse, it isn't going to work because it is unlikely the two covered all the bases needed to be covered for this ruse to not get unraveled.

Long-time Utah resident here, I don't know anyone that uses "old man" to refer to their father. I've never heard that expression except in movies or books.
The mention of a $2,000 rifle scope grabbed my attention. This falls in the upper range for scopes, and suggests that the Mauser rifle may have been similarly expensive. This would be a very nice upscale setup rather than a cheap modified military rifle. Nor would this be anything like a $500 all-in-one package from Bass Pro Shops.
I have no idea how or why his "old man" would be engraving rifle bullets (cartridges) either -- this is a niche activity at best.
Rifle serial number "not tracing to me" --- errr, if purchased by his father or grandfather it would be easy to find him. This would be a plot suited for gradeschool kids rather than adults.

The online (Discord) discussion that Tyler Robinson was involved in both strongly implies guilt and that people knew he wanted to do this. Although a Discord spokesperson has denied their service was used to plan the murder it's hard for me to believe there weren't people in his circle at least aware he wanted to do this. I think he has been trying to make it look like he acted alone.

This was originally the service rifle made from 1898 to 1935 for the German Army, in 7.92×57mm Mauser caliber - but also done more recently for the US markets in 30.06 caliber. I doubt very much that it wouldn't originally have had a serial number though.
This case comes across as video gamer crazy more than transgender crazy. Gamers spend a lot of time playing superheros and completing fantasy "difficult" shots and objectives per the game rules. The standards for success are set by the game rather than real world physics, and often not nearly as hard are real world standards. His reasoning in the texts does not rise above game logic.

No! I've been a shooter since the mid 1980's and I've never seen any one even write something on a casing with a sharpie marker much less engrave something on one.
I don’t get “engraving” bullets. When I first heard it leaked, I didn’t believe it. You don’t engrave bullets, because you’ll mess up their aerodynamics. I can see maybe writing on them with a Sharpie, but I still haven’t seen that. On bombs yes, but not projectiles. I am also surprised they would get an inscription from the fired round. All this changes if it was the casing that was engraved.
My take is the boyfriend was shocked he went through with it. He ghosts the conversation as soon as the killer confirms he did it. Repeated texts to him got no response. He also called the FBI that NIGHT.

The United States adopted a service rifle with a Mauser pattern action in 1903 in .30-03, most were rechambered to .30-06 in 1906. Many or most people mean loaded cartridges when they say "bullets." Some passive-aggressive salesdudes in stores give buyers a literal box of bullets when they ask for bullets.
The gun culture has shifted heavily toward fantasy role play and gaming in recent decades, as city kids are exposed mainly through games. They are often very fashion conscious and have little sense of function too. The older generations were predominantly from farm, military, or police backgrounds.
Assume it was the casing engraved. Regards the weapon there are numerous variants. The original '98 model was a WWI German weapon also sold in export form to many other countries, especially in South America. Also Turkey iirc. In the interwar period the design was modified, made shorter. This was the k98 of WWII. Lots of them around. Lots converted to 30-06. $2,000 for a scope does seem pricey for what would have been an old, perhaps tired rifle, but possible. Not that anything that this guy says can be trusted.

I would call these exchanges as not so much scripted as stilted. Meaning the shooter (at least) was trying to make sure some points were hit but it wasn't strictly a script.
Guns were expensive and modern high-tech devices back 100 years ago. Gun makers used serial numbers for inventory control and repair service tracking, while the biggest buyers (i.e., police and military) needed serial numbers for inventory control and maintenance too.
The last examples of no-serial-number guns that I heard about were cheap or giveaway "pipe gun" single shot rifles available from rural hardware stores. That practice would have changed with the GCA of 1968.

My dad had a Mauser 98, that his dad picked off the battlefield in WWI. Once, I took multiple shots with it at a target about 100 yds distant. No scope, just iron sights with a range slider on it. It was very accurate, even though it was 100 years old when I fired it. 200 yds is not a long shot at all for this rifle.people that say it took a highly trained sniper to make the shot don't know what they are talking about.

A modern rifle shoots a "cartridge" that consists of a hollow brass "casing" that holds the gunpowder that propels the bullet and a primer that sparks the gunpowder when the trigger is pulled, and a "bullet" that sits at the front end of the casing and is expelled from the casing and down the barrel when the gunpowder is ignited. The casing either remains in the rifle after taking a shot (as would be the case with a bolt-action rifle such as the one used in the shooting) or is expelled out of the opening on the side of the rifle if it is semi-auto or fully automatic. Thus, the casing (which could be engraved or etched, if one wanted to) would remain in the weapon or at the spot where the shot was taken, unless the shooter (or an accomplice) then picked it up; also, the etching would not affect the bullet trajectory, as it is not etched.

Not a case. From what I read several day ago, the spare ammunition was inside the rifle. Even very old rifles often hold 3 to 5 extra cartridges in a magazine hidden inside the stock. This facilitates reloading for additional shots, if needed.
Apparently the shooter fired once and left the empty in the barrel chamber, while the remaining engraved cartridges remained in the magazine.

These texts were released by law enforcement, don’t have timestamps, and may not be the full exchange. At the same time, the investigators have made statements that the roommate didn’t know in advance.
Maybe they are leading the roommate on to get as much information as they can now. Maybe they think they need the roommate’s cooperation and testimony for the prosecution of the shooter. Maybe they haven’t decided yet whether they will charge the roommate too.
Somewhere in those emails, Robinson made mention of just “memes” when it came to the bullet etchings, but those memes are connected to certain groups of the Discord guys, which includes groypers, nihilists, incels and other various weirdos.

I'm with you half way. Some of the strangest left-wing people I met were from conservative areas and had little exposure to the full spectrum of leftism. They knew that they were different from those around them, and hated a lot small town stuff. They saw themselves as rising above their horrid roots and overcorrected. That is like trying to read information into someone who uses Instagram, Facebook, or sends text messages. Him being a member of particular Discord servers might have some reasonable inferences which can be drawn from it. Discord by itself is in no way a monolithic community.

Discord is very popular in the game community. Many games now have dedicated Discord servers in order to provide information and get feedback on games. There is no default political slant to Discord, you can get your fill of politics on many different servers. Discord is centralized so everything is logged, you can't evade the feds if they want the info so it's a very poor platform for doing bad things. Think of Discord like IRC (internet relay chat) on steroids with extra features like voice and video chats.

Good point. There may be earlier comms that appear to implicate the roommate, and it sure looks like the shooting was done for or because of him. These were chosen for charging because they implicate Robinson.
I haven't seen why the original photos of the killer from surveillance video were so poor. The guy's chin looked like it had been deliberately pixelated. How long does it take to enhance an image like they do on TV?

That's a tell for sure. It's hard to imagine the guy running away from the police being more informed that the person sitting at home watching the news. At that point in time **we all** had more information about the manhunt than the killer. This part too "then interrogated someone in similar clothing." What others have said about Discord sums it up, but I'll add one more. Discord also allows audio streaming to a channel, which is why it is preferred by gamers over other similar "chat" systems. You can have a large conference call with gamers you want to play with. When not playing, it works on message board to coordinate when to meet up and play. As you can create "private" groups, it also allows Social Media Influences/Game Streamers the ability to give fans special access through invite only rather than say YouTube's open comment system. Ultimately, it attracts all kinds of people that play games online.

Not sure about your sincerity but here is a primer. Discord is an app that allows a person to set up a pub sub server/client message system where people can sign up for your server and once on your server can be given permissions to enter various channels.
You can give people various levels of access and control over the server including moderators, administrators, members and guests as typical roles.
People with proper roles can create a variety of different channels and groups. There are typically a General Chat, Announcement Channel, a Guest/Signup channel in which most servers have an automated registration system now.
From there you can create an infinite number of topic specific channels. There are also tech support channels where you can set up a ticket and deal with individual issues on the server.
There is a 3rd party bot ecosystem where developers create discord bots that automate many of the tasks associated with running the server.

Sounds like a contingency in case Robinson gets caught. He knew he was caught, his mother noticed his photo and showed it to his father. His father immediately called him. The rifle had been left and he couldn't provide his father with a photo, etc.
