"I think what’s getting people talking — or rather, why everyone was watching these TikToks obsessively over the weekend and picking them apart — is how regressive the ads seem."

"The line about her having great jeans — several people are suggesting in the comments on Instagram and TikTok that this is a 'pro-eugenics ad.' Whether or not that’s the case, it is part of a wave of imagery of influencers, pop stars and musicians that feels tethered to the values of another time."

From "How American Eagle’s Sydney Sweeney ‘good jeans’ ad went wrong/A provocative new denim campaign featuring the actress leans into retro sexiness — and it’s sparking debate about eugenics and ‘wokeness'" (WaPo).

That's a gift link. My last of the month. In case you want to see the ads people are so worked up about. I've avoided talking about them because I don't want to help make them go viral. But they've obviously gone massively viral, so expect more of the same.

It's a pun: "good genes"/"good jeans." You'd think it would have been noticed, used, and groaned over decades ago and that it would be completely uncool to bring it up now. But what if it's cool precisely because people are sensitive and fearful about a perceived rise in enthusiasm for white supremacy. It's needling those poor souls. It's transgressive. Is that where we are?

By the way, Deepika Padukone used the pun 3 years ago, for Levi's jeans:

Planned parenthood is a wicked solution, a eugenics favor by Choice. DEIsm (e.g. rabid or supremacy) is a bigot's gay indulgence. Progressive or [unqualified] monotonic processes with a liberal (i.e. divergent) bent is a religious avenue to escape or force modern modalities.

I like boobs. I like chicks in jeans. I especially like hot chicks in jeans with a little boob showing. This is quite unremarkable in the history of advertising. It's almost a classic, in that it is far less soft-pornish than the old clothing commercials of the '80s, more like Goldie etc. giggling through a '60s commercial.

What is remarkable is the media's obsession with Sweeney. Like Trump the young lady seems exceedingly blessed with shortsighted and stupid enemies. Who absolutely obsess over her. I don't get it. As Insty hinted at today it's a lot like the old advertising fiction about airbrushing ice cubes and subliminal whispers, only todays sleuthing socialists see Hitler's mustache hidden in every shadow.

If white Americans matched the economic success of Indian Americans, would that bolster the enthusiasm for white supremacy? The NYT and its readers live in a strange, regressive world. On the left it is always 1957, and we are always in Birmingham, Alabama.

I say let Sydney Sweeney and Deepika Padukone do what they do best.

Nothing beats great genes. Or Jeans. If the NY Times is on the case, you can bet the ads are working the way they were intended. They will sell jeans. I guess the Sports Illustrated plus-size swimsuit issue wasn't the hit some hoped it would be. But...there's still plenty of room for plus-sized women in ads. We can never have enough Jardiance dance routines.

Well the Post has nothing about eugenics, so I'm not seeing how the conversation is being steered to that - I see no connection, except that it's another kind of discussion related, incidentally, to genetics. The Post article is complete babble. They're saying she looks slightly 'butch', which is not a vibe I'm picking up from those images at all. Then, they bring up an implication of racism by comparing this blonde woman to another blonde woman, the giant Colombia from Gast's painting, American Progress, that was up here last week.

It would seem they're trying to spin up the story into whole cloth, to make it last and improve sales, so..... yawn.

American Eagle (AEO), like a lot of brick & mortar retailers, is in trouble. It has lost half its value in a year. But the stock is up 20% after or because of the controversy (so-called) over Sydney and her jeans ad. So they are taking a calculated risk and so far the market seems to like it. We've all been thorugh the edgy jeans ads. Recall 15 year old Brooke Shields "nothing comes between me and my Calvins" ad in the 80's. A lot more wrong with that then anything Sydney, an adult, and AEO did here to generate publicity.

Liberals get your mind out of the gutter. The jeans aren’t white. They are blue and lovely to look at. Just like the model. By the way where did the model get her looks. So let’s recap, the ad’s message is that you are noticeable because of your genes but your jeans go a long way in making you even more noticeable.

RCOCEAN II ayon kay ...

I tried to read the "Conversation" in the article, but its so full of leftwing cant and jargon "Male gaze" "Retro-sexiness" and the "GenZ stare". And then there's this:

"The first thing I thought of when I heard the tagline “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans” was the DHS Instagram account, which posted a subtly racist painting a few weeks ago and an explicitly racist painting last week. The latter depicted a gigantic blonde buxom woman chasing away Native people to make way for White settlers. When this is the imagery being promoted by our government, a pun about “genes” hits differently."

This is so insane and crazy its hard to apply logical analysis to it. Once again, everything Trump and his administration does is bad. Also, emphasizes that the MSM sees everything as a race issue. And hates whites people.

Its absurd to counter with "But this isn't about race, if the model was brown it'd be the same ad." because the MSM and the Left doesn't care. They see "color blindness" and "treating everyone the same" as racism. Any positive portrayal of whites or negative portrayal of non-whites is bad and racist.

RCOCEAN II ayon kay ...

The Left and MSM position on race is perfectly illustrated by a far-left US district court judge who ruled outlawing affirmative action (and requiring race neutral admissions to colleges in Michagan) was "racist" and therefore unconstitutional. The Constitution and the civil rights law requires whites to be discriminated against.

People are massively overreacting. (again) This pun has been used since genes and jeans were a thing.

She does have good jeans and she also has good genes when it comes to attractiveness.

Eugenics is the process of intentionally manipulating genes and has nothing to do with this situation, since there is no mention that she got her looks through selective breeding.

It'not like she's claiming to be a genetically engineered super human. She lucked out by randomly having genes that would make her attractive if she also kept in good shape.

I hate it when people try and impose an evil motivation to a totally innocent, accidental and common situation.
