They depend on a charismatic figure head to cover up their lack of a coherent program, poor organization, and lack of a talent pipeline. Dems need to understand:
- They have a variety of flagrant liars in their party and they cannot continue to promote them and push them forward as public speakers for the party (Schiff, Brennan, Abrams).
- They have a variety of criminals in their party and they operate as if with enough time it'll go away, rather than they need to be seen as leading the investigation and addressing the corruption.
- Dems have huge boondoggle projects like the high-speed rail in CA that they simply keep doubling down on, showing they are neither serious about governing nor about addressing obvious graft.
- Dems have had many major scandals now across Russiagate, Biden's mental incompetence, how they handled Harris being installed as their candidate without a primary, and more....and they avoid it like the plague.
- Dems national party has been in disarray since Wikileaks showed Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the DNC actively conspired to promote Hillary and push out Bernie. She resigned and was hired by the Clinton campaign and the merry-go-round went on.
I could continue. My point being Dem's at a party level have fundamentally lacked leadership and the ability to address issues within their own party, states, representatives, or executives and that hasn't changed and won't magically change in 18 months.

Carter and Clinton both made the cover of Time magazine, very early on, when that was something like a ceremonial anointment. Obama was recognized as "The One" early on. Yes, they had to fight for their nominations and things could have ended up differently, but the retrospective throughline is a powerful one. If you have a good enough team, they can make you appear to be so much the obvious choice that the other contenders fade into the background.
I don't think a D leader is needed now. When I recall the 2006 thumping R's took, there was no D leader at that point. Things moved quickly after Nov 2006.

He gave the opening speech at the 1988 convention, and there had been speculation that he'd run in 1988. So he was also on the radar screen by 1989. There's no one comparable now for the Democrats. Can anyone even remember who spoke at the 2024 DNC?
