Sunrise — 4:26, 5:23.

The official sunrise time today was 5:20, so that first picture was quite early. Arriving at the vantage point 20 or 30 minutes before the sunrise time can be important in catching the most colorful parts of the very best sunrises, but you can see from the second photo that it was not one of those days. The reason for heading out early today was the hope of catching the Northern Lights. I don't think the light circle you see there has to do with the Northern Lights, though. I think it's the beginning of nautical twilight, and the circle is where the sun will rise.

That early photo is by Meade, who took a headstart. I caught up with him at our usual vantage point and caught that stunningly bland sunrise image.

I like Late Spring/Summer civil and nautical twilight even more than sunrise.

Northern lights
Have you ever seen a Northern light?
Free as a breeze
But you’ll pay for the cheese

I do believe that second one is Nessie, that Scottish tart from Loch Ness.

Too many clouds down south to see any Northern lights.

Was curious to know if Ann Althouse or Meade was able to see any Northern Lights last night. I got all kind of updates about a big G4 storm and we'd be able to see them with the naked eye down here in Cincinnati. I was out there after 10pm and didn't see a thing. Figure you guys are farther North and maybe you did

In recent days, Mr. Trump has pardoned some white-collar criminals- people who have committed financial fraud. I'm not too unhappy about letting them out of prison before they've served their full term, but I'm livid that they may also avoid repaying fines and restitution. It's a terrible example!

I get insane pictures of sunrise at the Perdido key bridge. IYKYK.

Russian talk show on the bomber situation. I like the babe, who calls for a firing squad for the West and improved history instruction in the schools, and the guy who calls for an immediate nuclear strike on the West owing to the inability to retaliate after a first strike.

Imputing motives isn't a Russian skill. It's a leftist failing.

Do you think it would be proper to classify Nessie as a “watery tart”?

Both Mamet and Maher referenced Mamet’s latest movie, Henry Johnson. It was directed by David Mamet and is available for rent at
henryjohnsonmovie.com
A 7-day streaming license costs $10
When you rent it, for anther $90 you can get a movie poster signed by Mamet. The poster’s great and worth seeing. Buying is another matter.
It’s a “dialogue-driven prison drama following Henry Johnson (Evan Jonigkeit), a naive lawyer whose act of compassion leads to imprisonment. He navigates manipulation by authority figures, including his boss (Chris Bauer), cellmate Gene (Shia LaBeouf), and a prison guard (Dominic Hoffman).”
Reviews are pretty good.1

"Suffice to say, disaster response is no joke. If you don’t know what or when hurricane season is, you’re not qualified to run FEMA. Get someone knowledgeable in there.” Rep. Bennie Thompson

Yes, of the non sword throwing variety.

Mamet’s new book is out this week. I purchased my copy through Ann’s AMZN portal.

Just a reminder that Biden’s head of DHS claimed there was no funds for FEMA during the last hurricane season and left North Carolina without recovery efforts, lest they make it to the polls to vote the bums out. Maybe Democrats should shut their mouths about how to run FEMA, or any disaster relief (how’s the Palisades recovery)?

Now that the Federalist Society appears to be sidelined, I'm changing my prayers from "Please dear Lord, can you please call Judge Thomas home, to Dear God, please let Judge Thomas serve as the longest SCOTUS serving Justice in the galaxy, as he wants, and of course as always, thy will be done not mine nor Justice Thomas. Amen

There's a Reddit post claiming Truckers are being pulled over and quizzed to see if they speak English.
Depending of the Quiz, that could be abused. Take the King's English for example. My goodness gracious.

I take it you already know
Of tough and bough and cough and dough?
Others may stumble, but not you,
On hiccough, thorough, slough and through.

Beware of heard, a dreadful word,
That looks like beard but sounds like bird.

And dead: It’s said like bed, not bead --
For goodness’ sake, don’t call it deed!

Watch out for meat and great and threat…
They rhyme with suite and straight and debt.

A moth is not the moth in mother,
Nor both in bother, nor broth in brother.

And here is not a match for there,
Nor dear and fear for bear and pear,

And then there’s dose and rose and lose --
Just look them up -- and goose and choose.

And cork and work and card and ward,
And font and front and word and sword.

And do and go, then thwart and cart,
Come, come, I’ve hardly made a start!

A dreadful language? Why, sakes alive!
I’d learned to speak it when I was five.

And yet, to write it, the more I tried,
I hadn’t learned it at fifty-five.

I got through the Timothee Chalamet biopic on Bob Dylan. He sings sort of like Dylan, and he smokes a cigarette exactly like Dylan. I enjoyed the movie, but mostly for the music. I thought the movie went over the top on Dylan's move from folk music to electric guitar. Dylan's appearance at the Newport Folk Festival wasn't like Luther nailing his defiance to the Cathedral door.. From what I understand, there were a few scattered boos during his performance, but it wasn't such a big deal. ...The movie is not hagiographic, but I think they pulled their punches Dylan is something more and something less than this screen version.

There is a conspiracy theory abiding in La La Louisiana that chemtrails are evidence wherein the government or another secretive organization is using commercial or military aircraft to release chemicals or metals into the atmosphere, visible in the white lines aircraft leave behind in the sky. Agin' Cajuns claim these are used for a range of things from weather modification to mind control.

So Louisiana House Represntatives passed a bill wherein there will never ever be another white line in the sky nor will there ever be another hurricane passing through the state from the "Gulp of America."

I wasn't at the Newport Festival but the booing was a big deal very widely discussed in my university. Some said the booing was righteous and no one should ever listen to Dylan again because he had abandoned the purity of folk and was going for the big bucks and the cheap appeal of electric guitars to make corporate controlled music. As an English major, I could hear how Dylan was pulling various poetic forms into popular song and I just felt that that could not be some kind of evil, devious corporate plan. I thought they couldn't get any poetry beyond Rudyard Kipling up in those high corporate buildings - not that I didn't like Kipling myself but there were other poets and corporate guys would never get them so how could they plan to use them?

Of course these days songs based on those forms are used to sell cars:
"When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No, I won't be afraid
Oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me"

... cut to car speeding along a dark hilly road but this car will stand by you, not break and leave you stranded.

I cannot tell you how strange and ironic it was the first time I heard corporate using the revolution to sell the more expensive and fashionable products. But that was something done by another generation. In my own generation that music was anti-war, not pro-car. So I went on buying Dylan. That's how it was - the opposition was huge at the time, much bigger than just booing at the Festival, but social media didn't exist then so the only Wayback machine is in the memories of a passing generation. Or maybe in some of those underground papers which I think Althouse has stashed away?

wildswan বলেছেন...

PS I realize Ben King wrote Stand By Me; it's just that he was the first of that type I heard being used in a commercial a generation later. There's been a lot of that since then.

Finally able to get back to listening to the audiobook of The Instability of Truth - and now what I want to see is an academic study comparing kids from social science majors in especially the Ivies with Korean and Vietnam prisoners of war. Not just the experiences of self-criticism to break down the person's identity and indoctrination to establish a new one (of course, the students have not been subjected to starvation and other privation, but in our age of lengthy exploration of past trauma, it certainly seems possible to me that they've been primed for re-education), but also their behavior having been indoctrinated, are strikingly similar.

In particular, the concept of being triggered seems an awful lot like the outsized startle response that these prisoners had, as well as their tendency to interpret Rorschach blobs (in the case of the students, any image or story) in appallingly violent or otherwise negative terms. But depression, inability to settle to a job, low affect with signs of underlying anger and instability- sound familiar?

Ideally, to render such a study as reliable as possible, I would like to see these students take the same psychological tests that the returning prisoners of war were given, but I don't know if they are still in use or are deprecated.

I was startled some years ago to find a little snippet of Jethro Tull used in a car commercial. It may or may not have been the one where the little Spanish(?) boy says that he is told the automobile has powers magical . . .

That's a brilliant poem, Lem. It reminds me of Barzun's observation that English spellings illumine the history of the language.
