White smoke!

New pope about to show his face.

ADDED: "The cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church elected Robert Francis Prevost as their 267th pontiff on Thursday, ending a two-day conclave in Rome with the election of the first pope from the United States" (NYT).

AND: Some background from the National Catholic Reporter, published  last week: here. Excerpt: "He is a polyglot who speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese and can read Latin and German, giving him abilities to communicate with his fellow cardinals in ways that others cannot. The language ability, his international travel experience as head of his religious order, and his work in identifying Latin-rite bishops around the world mean that he will be among the best-known candidates going into this conclave. While fluent in languages, he is not garrulous. When he speaks, he does so with caution and great deliberation. A private man with a reserved style, he will not score high on the charm offensive. But his steely determination and clarity might comfort those looking for a leader who knows where he wants to go and how to get there."

Is he trans? Cause on TV the new pope is trans. It's more important the new pope is trans even than that he's Catholic...on TV. It might be different in real life. I don't know. But hear me out, we've had countless Catholic popes and people are still going to hell in droves so maybe it's time we tried a trans pope. I say "we" but full disclosure, I'm not Catholic...or trans, so I'm pretty objective on this. Maybe a trans pope could turn in some better numbers. There's only one way to find out, right?

From what I understand, there are now more church-going Catholics in England than Anglicans. Ditto in Germany with Lutherans. The Pope has got the last laugh on Henry VIII and Luther.....There's something to be said for Catholicism and its stodginess. The priestly vestments were what well dressed estate owners wore in the the fourth century. We're temporal beings who live in a fluxed up world. It's a comfort to say prayers that have endured for centuries and to pretend there's a still point at the center of the whirligig.....I'm no longer a Catholic, but I wish him well and I hope the Church endures longer than Original Sin.

I'm moderately surprised. I see news articles which say he was a possibility, somehow he wasn't on my mental radar at all. One article says Pope Francis groomed Prevost to be his heir. Tina Trent ayon kay ...

I speak as a loyal Catholic. We may criticize the political and human aspects of our Pope, but not his spiritual stature. That is a bright line. Let's hope his Augustine background reigns him in. But he was one of the small number of Augustines who volunteered to go to South America during the Liberation Theology years. That bodes poorly. However, if the Cardinals think they have pulled something symbolic over Trump by clearly choosing this leftist Chicago native (I barely think of Chicago as part of America anymore, and definitely not their deeply corrupt Church), they have another thing coming.

The "least American of the Americans", that's how the Italian press have described Robert Cardinal Provost. He has chosen to be call Pope Leo XIV... not a very auspicious name in my opinion. Leo I is known as the pontiff who saved Rome from Attila. How he did that isn't known. The Catholic faithful are asked to believe the Hunnish leader was impressed with Leo courage or something more ridiculous. Those whose minds are less inclined to enjoy a story that ends with a god being lowered onstage via cables and pulleys think an epidemic in southern Italy dissuaded the Huns from sacking Rome, a city already pretty well sacked-up to go by Alaric and his Visigoths. At any rate, Leo didn't save the Po valley, Gaul, or Dacia from barbarian rapine, so his miracle was a minor one.

Another famous Leo was the Tenth of that Name, Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici, who was probably the second richest man in Italy and the third richest in Europe after Charles V. He's know for selling indulgences and burning anyone who pointed out the swindle.

The new Leo is not going to be friendly to Europe's growing anger against the Islamization of their homelands. nor to those who want to overturn Net Zero before Europe begins to literally starve. Provost is less of a Catholic than a Marxist in a cassock. The problem is the few Europeans who attend Catholic Mass are increasingly leaning to the political right, whereas the leftist are overwhelmingly unreligious if not downright satanic. We could see another schism with conservative Catholics rallying to a charismatic leader who opposes Leo's destructive politics and heretical theology.

A last week I joked about Trump for Anti-Pope! Now I'm not joking.

It should help with their fundraising.

Though here i cant help but think it implies a lack of imagination. But maybe thats not a bad thing

Quaestor ayon kay ...

"He wanted to draw their attention to the fact that a good Catholic would be in a major spiritual battle with the surrounding socio-political climate, specifically including the climate within the Church."

What's most sad is how traditional/historical Jesuit teaching taught rigorous critical thinking and logical thought....

....and then a Dumb Lefty Mark comes along and demonstrates conclusively how an idiot can slip right on through...on top of all the Jesuit Universities and many parochial schools that have gone totally woke.

Do we really need to name them?

Fortunately, not all have and my own children have benefitted from luckily finding a Jesuit school that has held the line quite strongly and explicitly, and I mean explicitly, and tells the Dumb Lefty Mark types their type of thinking is incompatible with true Jesuit education and teachings.

There was quite the doctrinal kerfuffle just a handful of years ago involving the wokies trying to push the trans BS and leftist political thought. They were "invited" to leave the school and find a more "compatible" educational environment.

So I was quite pleased to have such an institution available to my family.

Mark ayon kay ...

Drago, take your trolling and insults and shove them where the sun don't shine. Your very words make it clear you are not participating in a discussion, you are just flinging your poo.

Tina Trent ayon kay ...

Gadfly: that is meaningless. We don't know how he voted, only that he voted in GOP primaries. Abortion being the most important religious position, he likely voted Republican in the general elections too. But 1) he knew that vote was merely symbolic in Illinois, and 2) he has maintained a steady drumbeat of vituperous opposition to Trump and Vance on social media, demanding open borders while Vatican City has firmly shut walls. He is described as living mostly in Peru, but in fact he spent much more time in South Chicago. He was dispatched to the Vatican, as many Religious caught up in molestation scandal are, right around the time Pflager and another priest were accused of molestation under his watch. He delivered his blessings in Spanish and Italian but not English, despite having spent his entire childhood and much more of his time as a Priest and Bishop in South Chicago, and much less time in Peru than is being highlighted.

He is a political Trojan Horse, and he is an unusally political Cardinal, and his selection was unusual in other ways.. Worst, after scandals here and in Peru, he was placed in charge of the body of Cardinals that is supposed to investigate sexual misbehavior by Religious. But what do you know? You won't even use your name. We're done here. Keep cherrypicking headlines, pal.

Tina Trent ayon kay ...

What is most important is that he is being depicted as being mainly from Peru. This is entirely incorrect. He votes in all American elections, including 2024. He returned to Chicago regularly: Peru was a missionary position for him. Once I checked the dioces and timelines, he was in the states and in the middle of the Phleger mess and another sex scandal for which he was the Church arbiter. He hid the Priest near a dayschool.

He was chosen to divide and meddle in American politics; he is unusually political. I will have more on his ties to radicals and domestic terrorists in Chicago when I can research it. But he was in the right place at the right time. He needs to learn his political place. May God bless him with insight and to ask mercy from all the victims to whom he systematically denied justice and healing.

Dumb Lefty Mark wouldn't recognize a "meaningful" discussion if it bit him in the arse.

I wonder where it was that I "demanded" Dumb Lefty Mark write an essay?

The very idea that anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together would request Dumb Lefty Mark write a coherent or on point or relevant essay on any subject under the sun is laughable on its face.

Want my perspective? Of course you do. That's why you come here. The position of pope has always been a political office. It is merely an extension of the Roman empire. They elect from among themselves a new emperor to manage the wealth and people of the empire. The Catholic Church serves the same purpose as the temples of ancient rome which were used as banks. Do popes matter? If you're catholic I suppose they do. Are they gods messenger on earth? Nope.
