Chuck Todd now emerges to inform us that it wasn't ackshually the Progressive Legacy MSM that fell down, it was their sources that failed to do the right thing. ""At the end of the day, no journalist is as good as their sources. At the end of the day the Democratic party lied to the American people.." says Todd.

Well, Chuck, what can we say? They were all 'anonymous, weren't they? Because that's what you continually told us ... but - we know who you are, don't we?

Jaq કહ્યું...

Wow, Lindsey Graham is all in on WW3. He wants Europe to self impose a "bone crushing" energy embargo; well, he says that OPEC is going to sell out a fellow energy producer state because reasons, and they won't worry at all that they are next, so it won't be that bad.

All of the Russian oil that India buys? They just refine it and Europe laps it up, because they have no choice. Russia produces 10% of the word's oil supply, and in practical terms, it's not replaceable. China understands that if they should help defeat Russia, China is next.

Graham said that Russia is a gas station with an army, but it's a gas station with 6,000 nukes and hypersonic missiles for which we have no counter, despite this "Golden Dome" rhetoric out of Trump, who says that Russia stole the design from us. Maybe, but it works and they have demonstrated it in anger. Lindsey Graham also said that Ukraine will destroy themselves because their hatred of Russia is so strong, well, not in those exact words, he said "fight to the last Ukrainian." The Ukraine Constitution says that their government must protect the Ukrainian gene pool, well... Ukrainian men are just "chow" to the neocons.

This "endless war" looked so good on paper.

Except Madison and Milwaukee.

Wife & I watched comedian Mike Birbiglia last night on Netflix.I had not heard of him. Enjoyed the show, about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Like Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Gaffigan, he works "clean". His set was entitled the Good Life. Watch it all.Worth it.

Cheers all.

Thinking further about the, what i call 'agency' that could, maybe be at risk by an overly reliance on Artificial Intelligence, I remembered something David Foster Wallace said during his commencement speech to the graduating class 2005 at Kenyon College.

But if you really learn how to pay attention, then you will know there are other options. It will actually be within your power to experience a crowded, hot, slow, consumer-hell type situation as not only meaningful, but sacred, on fire with the same force that made the stars: love, fellowship, the mystical oneness of all things deep down.
Not that that mystical stuff is necessarily true. The only thing that’s capital-T True is that you get to decide how you’re gonna try to see it.
This, I submit, is the freedom of a real education, of learning how to be well-adjusted. You get to consciously decide what has meaning and what doesn’t. You get to decide what to worship.

Is that what Artificial Intelligence could put in jeopardy?

Jupiter કહ્યું...

The concrete pond I built 20 years ago is an ellipse, about 20 X 10, 4 feet deep at the deepest. I bought the goldfish from a pet store, which sells them as food for other, more interesting pets. But I dumped the little guys in the pond, and they have grown. Now the biggest one is about 5 inches long, and the other ones, 3 or 4 inches, follow him around.
They are restricted to a space which is quite small, by my standards. Yet I doubt that concerns them.
Back in the 70's, I read that the Soviet Union's ICBMs targeted at Eugene were programmed to detonate over Skinner's Butte, which is a few miles East of here. I expect that is still the targeting point, for both the Russian and the Chinese thermonuclear weapons. I doubt that the Iranians or the Norks have bothered to target Eugene, but who knows.
Should that plan eventuate, my house stands between the pond and the detonation, but my guess is that the house would evaporate, and so would the pond. Hydrogen bombs don't fuck around.
You might think that the fish would be concerned about this, and would be trying to do something about it. But they are not concerned, because they don't know. And if they were concerned, what might they do? Try to signal me, with the waves they raise, when they all turn at once? Horton Hears A Who?
The fish are not wise, but their indifference is wise. As Voltaire said, tend your garden. I'm tending mine. It includes the pond. I've planted some cattails. They're doing well, and the fish seem to like them.

Jupiter કહ્યું...

Your "garden" is that particular thing, that you do know a great deal about, and that you can control. Unlike all those other, deeply worrisome things. Voltaire said that others must tend their gardens, and you must tend yours. I think. It's been a while since I read Candide. "Everything is for the best, in the best of all possible Worlds!".

"It will actually be within your power to experience a crowded, hot, slow, consumer-hell type situation as not only meaningful, but sacred, on fire with the same force that made the stars:"

Hmmm. At times, when the World is showing me its rough side -- I am sick, I am tired, my back aches. I have been walking uphill for too long. I hurt, and none of my plans are going well -- I ask myself; If you had the option, of living this moment -- this awful, agonizing moment, gasping for breath, with no hope of anything better -- forever, for all of eternity. Or of dying -- ceasing -- just calling it quits. If this were all life had to offer, would you take life?

I'm partial to Coyote Roadhouse on Kangaroo Lake in Baileys Harbor (Door County), not (sorry, guys) so much for its views, food, etc., but because my family's first US stop after Ireland was in Baileys Harbor and I have fond childhood memories of the little resort my family used to own on Kangaroo Lake. Cousins still have a great property on the southern shore.

In town, I like the Blue Ox.

If you go anywhere in BH and see a silver-hated, mustachioed man of medium stature and moderate rotundity, and he is holding forth about classic cars, veterans' affairs, building, or the Catholic Church there (Stella Maris, which actually encompasses a few churches in the peninsula towns), and accompanied by a lovely silver-haired, sloe-eyed, soft-spoken woman of gentle mien, say hi to my Uncle Terry and Aunt Aleda from Jamie.

But my roots (and much of my extended family) remain deep in the Dairy State, to my (SoCal) husband's bemusement, as we met in college in California.

TBF, he grew up in Red State California, even interned in Governor Deukmejian's administration (SO MANY stories about that), and refuses to accept that the California of his youth is now a cautionary tale.

Plenty of good restaurants in Cheese Heaven, but I would take a ride that passes through the Dells which means a stop at Del-Bar for out of this world steaks. Also, while in Lake Delton, a detour through Mirror Lake State Park leads you to the Ishnala Supper Club for wonderful food and views. Stay off the stupid WWII duck boats on the Wisconsin River because you will likely run into a mechanical malfunction leaving you and a boatload of wet people adrift. If you like wet, there are lots of water slides.

Popeye's on Lake Geneva is great for steaks and Greek fare.

Pity you're not going to Milwaukee. The SafeHouse is a spy-themed restaurant with good food and cheeky intrigue. Connected to it is the historic Milwaukee Press Club which, if it's open when you're there, is an amazing place.

If you are wondering about how the eschaton is going to be imminentized, it's going to be more of an enshitification by AI. Here is a video of a guy using Claude for "Authors" <<- those should be read as air quotes, where he asks the AI, Claude, what areas of Amazon are underserved, then when Claude makes several plausible suggestions, he chooses one, and Claude researches and writes his book for him in about a minute, complete with cover design Creates a web page to sell it, and creates a video "trailer" for it.

I know some people say that a world of complete automation will be a new era where every man can own some productive asset and live off of it. Well there's your example, a book writing machine, just like the ones in 1984, and what will be the result? A deluge of slop of a magnitude not seen since the days of Noah.

To attack Russian air bases, Ukrainian spies hid drones in wooden sheds (Reuters)

"KYIV, June 1 (Reuters) - Ukrainian secret services were able to attack strategic bomber aircraft at Russian air bases on Sunday by hiding explosive-laden drones inside the roofs of wooden sheds, according to a Ukrainian security official and images posted online.

Ukraine's domestic security agency, the SBU, acknowledged that it carried out the operation, codenamed "Spider's Web" and said it had caused considerable damage.

The sheds were loaded onto trucks that were driven to the perimeter of the air bases. The roof panels of the sheds were lifted off by a remotely-activated mechanism, allowing the drones to fly out and begin their attack, the official said.

The security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said strikes were conducted on Sunday on four air bases, and that 41 Russian warplanes were hit.
An SBU statement posted on the Telegram messaging app estimated the damage caused by the assaults at $7 billion.
"Thirty-four percent of strategic cruise missile carriers at the main airfields of the Russian Federation were hit," the SBU said on the Telegram messaging app.

[snip]

...video posted on Russian Telegram channels, which has not been verified by Reuters, appeared to show matching sheds on the back of a truck.
The roof panels can be seen lying on the ground next to the truck, and the video footage shows at least two drones rising out of the top of the sheds and flying off.
The Russian online media outlet that posted the video, Baza, said in a caption that it was filmed in the district near the Belaya air base.

The Irkutsk region air base hosts Tupolev Tu-22M supersonic long-range strategic bombers, a type of aircraft that has been used to launch missiles against targets in Ukraine.
The operation, according to the Ukrainian security official, was personally overseen by Zelenskiy and Vasyl Maliuk, head of the SBU domestic intelligence agency.

If confirmed, the strikes would be the most damaging Ukrainian drone attack of the war, and would be a significant setback for Moscow.

The source shared video footage shot from a drone, saying it showed one of the strikes. The images showed several large aircraft, some of which appeared to be Tu-95 strategic bombers, on fire."
