I'm >this close< to putting some plants in the ground that I really shouldn't. But some of my seedlings are looking awesome. But consigning them to the garden before Mothers' Day is, I've historically found, foolishness. Still, my potting arms are itchy itchy itchy. Yesterday I started my sunflower seeds -- only a dozen of them -- in pots in the basement. Once I repair some fencing -- i.e., make more of the yard rabbit-proof (ish) -- I'll plant the sweet pea seeds.

I see their older siblings dead on the ground already. The late WaPoo gardening writer Henry Allen said their transience is part of their charm, or words to that effect. Good that cherry also makes nice cabinetry, though it's fallen out of fashion because tastemakers are idiots.

Pretty in pink.

The cardinals who were nesting in the bushes in front of our front porch have flown--even, it seems, the one that we are sure hatched. There are two eggs left, but nobody around to deal with them.

The hatchling took a week or more of feeding before it was ready to fly. Or plunge to the ground, whatever.
