I asked copilot what bursts out in the following Mallarme passage

We know, captives of an absolute formula that, of course, there is nothing but what is. However, incontinentiy to put aside, under a pretext, tbe lure, would point up our inconsequence, denying the pleasure that we wish to take: for that beyond is its agent, and its motor might I say were I not loath to operate, in public, the impious dismantling of the fiction and consequently of the literary mechanism, so as to display the principal part or nothing. But, I venerate how, by some flimflam, we project, toward a height both forbidden and thunderous! the conscious lacks in us of what, above, bursts out.

It answered with freshman analysis of the real world and the ideal world that poetry brings to us, which it thought was expected of it.

I said I thought what bursts out is the very literary effect of something bursting out that Mallarme aimed to produce, and that it would be invisible to any AI since it was never referred to.

Copilot said that was a very astute analysis, which again is what would be expected of it.

Basically it's a yes-man packed with cliches.

Matt Taibbi has a post about how the U.S. Government paid internet influencers to put out the party line on the Ukraine war. How many commenters here are sponsored? By whom are they sponsored? How can you tell?

Taibbi writes:

Following just this one group of contractors reveals the United States spent hundreds of millions of dollars on “social media influence” all over the world. In Ukraine, much of the money went to European middlemen who created dummy Internet personalities to sell the war. They put this in writing! Zinc was obligated $1.23 million from the State Department’s Office of Acquisition Management for two contracts, each of which would “identify, train, and engage 25 to 40 social media influencers” who’d “produce and publish their own social media content in line with U.S. Foreign policy objectives.”

Your tax dollars, turned into dummy social media accounts.

I asked Grok to write some poems for me.
With spellcheck’s help I typed in Marxist Gras instead of Mardi Gras:
Grok gave me this poem:

Marxist Gras, a red parade,
Class and banners on display.
No kings or beads, just equal cheer,
Comrades march, the day is here!

Purple flags for workers’ might,
Green for fields reclaimed by right,
Gold for dreams of shared delight,
A revolution’s festive sight.

No masquerade of wealth to see,
Just chants for solidarity.
Marxist Gras, both bold and free,
A carnival of equity!

I told Grok I wasn’t a commie pinko, could Grok write me a negative poem for Marxist Gras
This is what Grok came up with:

Marxist Gras, a grim charade,
Dreary banners on parade.
No joy or beads, just forced despair,
Comrades trudge through heavy air.

Purple for control’s tight grip,
Green for fields where freedoms slip,
Gold a lie that’s lost its gleam,
A hollow, bleak, oppressive dream.

No revelry, just chains to see,
A mask of false equality.
Marxist Gras, a joyless spree,
A carnival of misery.

I love both poems.
Happy Mardi Gras!

Gratifyingly, my COVID sourdough starter, named Martha by or youngest (I choose to believe that although he probably doesn't really remember it, he got the name from the gospel story with which I identify so strongly) woke right up over the weekend and I have what should be a really nice loaf in the oven at the moment. Sourdough update: not as much oven spring as the loaf should have had, and would have, if I'd been more patient. (After 4 nights of Houston Rodeo bbq cook-off, I want to go to bed early!) And I brushed a finger across my 500° cocotte and will now be bothered by that all night. But the loaf is still lovely, deep golden brown, smells like heaven.

LLMs are supposed to just select the next word based on which one has higher probability considering the previous words, with a maximum number of words considered in the n sized phrase “window”selected. This probability is based on all the n sized phrases in the training data set, which is why you need so much processing power to train a model.

But there is also lots of manual stuff added to make it work, it is not just a pure calculation, there are lots of human made rules.

As was quoted in various forms earlier, the wonder is not that the bear dances well, but that he dances at all.

And some are using their rank and service to utter contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense- and others. Which is a clear Violation of UCMJ Article 88. They can say "I'm Mark Kelly and I think President Trump is a poopy head.", but they cannot say "I'm Captain Mark Kelly and I think President Trump is a poopy head." Or have his rank on the letterhead or use his title or anything similar. It's a violation of UCMJ Article 88. All retired personnel know there are some parts of the UCMJ that no longer apply- and other that do. Article 88 is one that applies. I wonder if SECNAV or SECDEF is going to call him on the carpet. Senator Mark Kelly can spout out all the nonsense and contemptuous words he wants. Captain Mark Kelly cannot. His X posts where he identifies as

In 2014, Senator Chris Murphy bragged about the United States successfully overthrowing Ukraine's government:

"I think it was our role, including sanctions and threats of sanctions, that forced, in part, Yanukovych from office."

"We have not sat on the sidelines. We have been very much involved. Members of the Senate have been there. Members of the State Department have been on the Square."

"The Obama administration passed sanctions. The Senate was prepared to pass its own set of sanctions, and as I've said, I think that the clear position of the United States has, in part, been what has helped lead to this change in regime."

"If, ultimately, this is a peaceful transition to a new government in Ukraine, it will be the U.S. on the streets of Ukraine who will be seen as a great friend in helping make that transition happen."

"There is a U.S. interest here. We are in the middle of negotiating a new trade agreement with Europe. To my state, it's enormously important. We do 40% of our trade in Connecticut with Europe."

"If Ukraine is part of the EU and thus is part of this new trade agreement with the United States, that could result in billions of dollars in new economic opportunities for the U.S."

"So, we do have an economic interest in Ukraine being a part of the EU, and we shouldn't be shy about making that interest clear."

We had a change under Blogger where your replies to somebody else's post would go under their post. That was nice, I thought, but Althouse didn't like it.

Among other problems, if you looked at a post individually, it wasn't sorted that way, it was time sorted by when it was published. And so it was confusing, who was responding to whom.

On the run-on italics and bold, my observation is that it's not correct to say the check for missing tags in comments was removed. I'm pretty sure it's still there however it looks to my old school programmer eyes that somehow the end tag check is not looking specifically for "/ letter" and will accept it with the slash *following* the letter. No browser will process that as an end tag, of course, so the formatting runs until the browser finds an appropriate ending tag. As to why now and not before, I suspect that in the nested comments code, end tags or some other kind of 'cancel formatting' tag is automatically inserted between comments. That might have been done in the old chronological format as well. The other explanation is that with the number of people commenting using various devices it's becoming more common to typo the ending tag than it was when using a real keyboard. Combine that with a mis-coded end tag check and you get more occurrences of run-on formatting. (This isn't the only blog with a run-on formatting problem in the comments. Whatever AofSHQ uses for comments has the same issue.)

I'm pretty sure I get a trashcan in Edge but I haven't seen a preview function in the comments here for a long time.

“Therefore, tonight I ask you, the Congress, to exercise your constitutional prerogative and declare war on the Russian Federation.

“If you do so, I will faithfully prosecute the war to victory. Ukraine and the other countries menaces by Russia will have no better friend than me.

“If you reject the motion to declare war, then I cannot violate my constitutional duty, and I will cease all activities that foreseeably lead to the death of Russian troops.

My list of really cool religious movies to watch during Lent.

A+

The Passion of Joan of Arc

Insanely great movie about a woman who hears the voice of God, and does what He tells her to do. Namely, drive all the English out of France. And the religious leaders are all, "girl, you're cracked, you can't even read." And she's all big eyes and innocent, and they're all ugly and demon-looking. And probably, she is delusional. I mean, she's got to be. Right? Right? This silent movie will blow your mind with its passion and intensity. One of the finest works of art I’ve ever seen.

I Know Where I'm Going

Michael Powell is unusual in that he gave Emeric Pressburger, his screenwriter, so much credit for his art. If you watch their films, you know why. Powell is a visual genius; Pressburger is the idea man. The two artists made at least three films about female passion: sexual passion, artistic passion, and religious passion. The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus are probably their most famous works. But I think this quiet film is the best of the trio.

Our hero is so willful, so human. She is determined to marry her fiancé, who is rich. That’s her plan, that’s what she wants her life to be. And she’s getting more and more upset because all her plans are not working out.

In The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus, passion is dangerous. In this movie, it’s denying your passion that is dangerous. You deny it and restrain it and control it and your damn passion is still there, still causing problems. She almost kills three people because she’s having a crazy battle trying to bottle up her emotions and keep them from ruining her plans.

This movie has a sneaky and wonderful bit of theology at its center. Provocative and fascinating, I think this is one of the greatest religious films ever made. And what’s amazing and wonderful is how quiet and subtle it is about God.

The Passion of the Christ

Powerful film about the Crucifixion of Jesus. I often watch it during Holy Week. It makes me cry every time. I wish Mel Gibson had shown a lot more of the happy and peaceful scenes after the Resurrection. To focus on Good Friday and cut Easter short is, I think, an artistic mistake. Also I think Gibson should have added a scene when Jesus talks about his upcoming execution. “The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life--only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.” In other words, Jesus wasn’t a helpless person who was murdered by the state. He was the Christ who sacrificed himself to save humanity. Christians understand this, and so they appreciate this movie.

After Death

Amazing doc. The filmmakers are trying to document what happens to us when we die. Lots of interviews with doctors, including a cardiologist and a neurologist. People who die describe their out-of-body experiences and all the things they saw or heard. A surprising number of people in the movie wrote books, most of them New York Times bestsellers.

None of the people seemed crazy at all. Just very honest and open about what happened to them and what they saw. Very thought-provoking film. Movie mentioned that Plato recounted a similar experience in Republic and Paul mentions a similar experience he had in Acts.

Lots of talk about heartbeats and brain activity. And everybody’s experience is unique, apparently, but there are also a lot of commonalities and shared experiences. The movie doesn’t prove there’s life after death, of course, but it does offer quite a bit of evidence for it.

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

A

Hacksaw Ridge

Exodus: Gods and Kings Brilliant movie about the wrath of God. And it’s a super-realistic epic, in the style of Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. The whole second half of the movie I’m going, wow, wow. I just love the parting of the Red Sea, how grounded in the world it is, how realistic. Scott took some liberties with Biblical text, which annoys a lot of people (very low rating at IMDB). But he’s captured the heart of the story. It made me weep.

The Name of the Rose

Cry, the Beloved Country This movie just blew me away. Made me cry. Completely awesome portrayal of South Africa in the 1940's. This is the best Richard Harris acting I've ever seen. He plays the racist father of a liberal son. His son is killed by a "native." When he hears the news, Harris' performance is on another world. He conveys his shock at his son's death, while at the same time conveying all the privilege of his status in a racist society. He has trouble getting his brain around the fact that his son is dead, and that a black man killed him. Later, Harris refuses to shake the hand of another black man who was paying his respects at the funeral. James Earl Jones' performance is almost as good, as a rural preacher searching for his lost son. It's a different, atypical performance for Jones--he plays a humble man who is prone to cry whenever a kindness is shown him. This is a seemingly tiny film about two men, but it serves as a much larger parable about race and racism, what it means to be a Christian, and fathers and sons. It is a thought-provoking, moving, and incredibly subtle movie. It's not so much a movie about race, as a movie about humanity. Brilliant.

Ordet Dreyer is famous for The Passion of Joan of Arc, the most inspired religious film ever made, and in my opinion the greatest film of the silent era. That film is astounding. In comparison, Ordet is rather ordinary. It resembles a Bergman black and white film, with very serious people and no humor whatsoever. Yet this movie is highly watchable in its own right. It’s a stark and somber movie about birth, death, and God.
