The California High-Speed rail project is widely recognized as a doomed tangle of conflicting progressive requirements which will never straighten out into rails. But taxpayer dollars ars still being awarded - $ 6,120,913,307.00 in grants according to datarepublicans data base. https://datarepublican.com/award_search/ (keyword: FJW5LSYDQLF3). It's pretty sobering to think that if this high-speed rail project were discontinued the six-billion-dollar savings would only be a day and half of the Doge Boys quota. That's what a trillion dollars means. But this project will be around for a long time, I expect. It seems to be like the Hotel California - you can start it "but you can never leave."
On Morning Schmoe today, they highlighted the strange case of Fr Calvin Robinson, a biracial English priest of the Anglican Catholic Church, associated with the Utrecht communion of Old Catholics and suchlike. He hangs out with Laurence Fox (DS Hathaway on Inspector Lewis) and decries the decline of British civilization. This brought him to the attention of an ACC parish in Grand Rapids MI, which hired him.
So Fr Calvin spoke at the March for Life (abortion is one of the issues that spawned the ACC’s breakaway from the mainstream Anglican communion), gave a rah-rah speech, and closed by jokingly giving the Musk salute. The audience got the joke and laughed uproariously. Well, Fr Calvin’s ACC bishop did not get the joke, and revoked his license to preach and do sacraments. His parish apparently will keep him - once you’re a breakaway, further breaks dont take much effort.
Why Schmoe and Mika wanted to highlight this, I have no idea. Probably a thousand people know who Fr Calvin is. Now all the Morning Toe viewers do, too. This guy definitely belongs to the school of no such thing as bad publicity.

A counter argument here is that Trump's tariffs on Mexico and Canada have been a complete fiasco that have generated a strong backlash from all corners of the US electorate and have served to focus the economic spotlight on the downsides of tariffs, from lost jobs and business to higher prices. They've also shown how interdependent the North American economy is, while also demonstrating that there is such a thing as retaliatory tariffs as well.
On the campaign trail, Trump presented tariffs as a tax that other countries would pay, rather than the reality of them being a tax that importers pay and pass on to consumers, causing inflation and often lost US jobs and growth as higher prices often lead to lower sales. There was no mention of retaliatory tariffs targeting American exports either.
Politically, Republicans know their states will be targeted and therefore suffer the most economically, which will make them unlikely to remain loyal to Trump on this issue, and perhaps others as well as his popularity takes a hit.
Overall, Trump's tariff fiasco and the immediate backlash may serve as a cautionary tale against repeating it. Trump himself seemed more than ready to use any excuse to pause the tariffs in talking with Mexican president Sheinbaum and will probably do the same with Trudeau when they talk. I'm sure the message to Trump from all corners of the political spectrum is to end the tariffs with some token gesture from Canada and Mexico, move on, and refrain from repetition of another tariff fiasco with allies in the future.

Let's see... oil prices up, US stock market down. Inflation up, employment down. Trump, once again, proves he's as incompetent at government as he was at business.
I'll give it til the first round of US inflation data that includes the impact of this. Doubt it will last a year.
I don't know anything about economics. But maybe somebody here can answer this for me. Why would... knowledgeable people compare the economy of the Great Depression with the economy of 2025, one hundred years later? Call me crazy, but maybe, just maybe, the fundamentals are a bit different?
A counter argument here is that Trump's tariffs on Mexico and Canada have been a complete fiasco that have generated a strong backlash from all corners of the US electorate and have served to focus the economic spotlight on the downsides of tariffs, from lost jobs and business to higher prices. They've also shown how interdependent the North American economy is, while also demonstrating that there is such a thing as retaliatory tariffs as well.
A counter to your counter-argument is that the speed with which our neighbors negotiated delays to the tariffs that were going to hurt them a whole lot more than they would hurt us has demonstrated to the American public that we have tools other than our military to use in order to further our interests.
And... retaliatory tariffs? I understand Canada's tariff on dairy coming from outside their country, for instance, has been something like 150-400% (depending on the source - I gather we were and are in the 200% range?) for some time now. So who was retaliating? We or Canada?
I mean just the culinary variety today compared to 100 years ago. You don't think if Mexico and Canada aren't around nobody else is going to step in?
And even then. If nobody was smart enough to figure how to make money, Mexican food and derivates are just one of a myriad of choices Americans have in abundance.
Six countries — Columbia, Denmark, Panama, China, Mexico, and Canada -/ have made noises about resisting Trump. Four of them capitulated within a day of being shown consequences. China will be next to capitulate, and I think he will get what he wants with regards to Greenland.
"When you sum up the Democrat party today, it screams narcissism. That is why Democrats do not change, but will always double down on their agenda. Narcissism is almost impossible to change or treat. We all who have known narcissists know this to be true.
Some of the traits of narcissism are widely published and accepted.
Example: A self-inflated sense of importance -- They refuse to debate issues. This is why they ignored the concerns of the American people and lost the 2024 election. They had their own agenda but the American people did not like it. The Democrat party did not care."
Opening up the payment system is kind of like when the Russians opened the Soviet archives. Wow. Obama Administration (Fauci) had sent $40 million dollars to Dr "Patient Zero" in Wuhan to whip up COVID in his CRISPR machine. Remember the news stories at the time about how snippets of the AIDS virus had been sewn into it? They don't sound so far fetched anymore.
I don't remember voting for "cheaper eggs" if the cost was the continued flow of fentanyl and cheap illegal labor (to fight the wage/price spiral —their words) and the shipment of more manufacturing overseas to avoid the economic inefficiency of paying US workers higher wages to do the work.
Remember., in 2020, how the FDA delayed approval of the COVID vaccine until after the election. They froze the samples that ultimately met the approval criteria and suspended testing until the day after the election. This is the deep state that the Democrats assembled over the years, and the RINOs went along with.

"I understand why many Americans are hesitant to accept what’s happening—acknowledging the reality of a coup in progress is frightening. But we must confront the facts before us with clear eyes: Donald Trump and Elon Musk are systematically seizing control of the federal government’s machinery through plainly illegal means. They violate civil service protections established by law, shuttering congressionally mandated agencies without authority, and subjecting career public servants to ideological purges."
"The government machinery—the actual systems and institutions through which public authority flows—is being captured by private interests operating outside constitutional constraints. This is precisely what the Civil Service Reform Act was designed to prevent. These aren’t abstract concerns about democratic norms—these are absolutely concrete violations of specific laws written to disallow this authoritarian capture of government functions." ~Mike Brock at Techdirt

We voted for this to happen. We need it to happen. It’s not a coup and it’s not illegal for the President to review government spending.
Four four years we had people whose names we did not know making decisions and placing papers under the hand of a senile old man who, at one point said that he had been lied to about the contents of one executive order that he had signed, the one cutting off sales of LNG to Europe, and our deep state propaganda bot assured us that the only decent thing to do was to vote the vegetable in for another four years.
China Hits Back at Trump With New U.S. Penalties ~ WSJ
As with Canada and Mexico -- this will fizzle into nothing. They are meeting in a week -- Trump will then announce he has negotiated an incredible deal with China -- the most beautiful incredible deal anyone has ever seen and tariff threats will be withdrawn. Another victory for Tariff Man.
With the exception of China, all of those countries have military strength equal to a good college football team. Combined. Spending decades in NATO and/or relying on the Pax Americana softened them. Some focused on social benefit programs and paying retirement benefits, plus allowing internal terrorism or the utopian entry of terroristic immigrants (i.e., Denmark and Canada -- but not nearly as bad as Sweden).
China's actions toward Taiwan and its internal Chinese-language politcal rhetoric is not soft or tender. They also went absolutely ballistic against the Uyghurs. China today is not unlike how Japan talked itself into imperialism in the early 20th century following an isolationary period that ended in 1868. They went to war with Russia, China, Korea, and then the US in 1941.
What convinced me it was a lab leak was that COVID included a DNA sequence in the spike protein that Moderna patented in 2016. This story claims a one-in-three-trillion chance it happened naturally. Then, Moderna made billions with state-mandated "vaccines" with side-effects and that were not actual vaccines. Hang together or hang separately, governments and drug companies said to themselves.
gadfly: We know you are indeed a gadfly and that you post inflammatory content. Still, did you forget all the evidence that the Obama-Biden clan was doing exactly what this accuses Trump and Musk of doing? Did you forget the Biden family blanket pardons of just 2 weeks ago? Trump wants the tariffs. Period. Trump tariffs are fiscal policy and not trade policy. He knows that prices for the American consumer will go up but they will flood the treasury with extra cash, which will give him the means to reduce income taxes. At the end, taxes for the average consumer hidden in increased consumer prices will go up and the taxes for the rich will go down. Historically, income taxes are a relatively new invention and government funded themselves with trade taxes. Tariffs are “beautiful” as a fiscal instrument hiding the tax from the average consumer who ultimately ends up paying the tax by increased consumer prices undeclared at the cash register.
As the global culture has shifted to smoke-and-mirrors "import" language, I don't think tariffs mean what people think they mean.
- In 2020 Italy had an early outbreak of COVID-19 when many Chinese workers returned to Italy from the Chinese New Year holiday. You see, they import Chinese WORKERS to allow "Made in Italy" badging on luxury clothes and leather goods.
- "Swiss Made" means 60% of the total value of an item comes from Switzerland. So, all those $$$$$$$ Rolex watches can have many parts from China/Taiwan. The fakes are so good that even vendors cannot confidently distinguish between fake and real. See $20K Panerai watches, as popularized by Sylvester Stallone.
- In the US there's a distinction between "Made in USA" and "Built in USA." Various companies have prominent "Built" labels on their products, such as Shinola Watches from Detroit, even as they import complete Chinese parts and merely screw them together in the US.
A rhetorical question, Mark. There's one coming up in 2026. In the meantime, there are things like polls, emails and calls to let said elected officials know how they feel about it.
Hahaha, the people that claimed Trump was a threat to Democracy are now claiming his is leading a coup over “The Administrative State”. The existence of an Administrative State that doesn’t have to answer to the voters is the antithesis of Democracy. The coup is being dismantled and power being restored to the American people.
For some reason Kak thinks the richest man in the world and the billionaire who hired him are as driven by "tax cuts for the rich," which is supposedly more evil than avoiding taxes altogether like the Biden Crime Family. Must be something in the water on Bainbridge Island.

Wahhhhh...."I was misinterpreted"claims the idiot who blatantly said he was going to house one in his garage attic, and "Good luck to the feds to come and get them???" Okay, it's time to put these law breakers behind bars....
I don't remember Kak coming out against sanctions on a major producer of oil and gas, and the major producer of fertilizer, which has all of the knock on effects of tariffs. It's all about whether you care about what is trying to be accomplished with them or not, I guess, and these arguments of his are used or ignored as convenient.

A dope will do dopey things,,, another wasteful photo op! The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers opened two dams on Friday in Central California and let roughly 2.2 billion gallons of water flow out of reservoirs, after President Donald Trump ordered the release with the misguided intent to send water to fire-ravaged Southern California. Trump celebrated the move in posts to Truth Social post on Friday and Sunday, declaring, “the water is flowing in California,” and adding the water was “heading to farmers throughout the State, and to Los Angeles.” There are two major problems, water experts said: The newly released water will not flow to Los Angeles, and it is being wasted by being released during the wet winter season. “They were holding extra water in those reservoirs because of the risk that it would be a dry summer,” Heather Cooley, director of research for California water policy organization the Pacific Institute. “This puts agriculture at risk of insufficient water during the summer months.” On Friday, Trump posted that 1.6 billion gallons was being released adding that “in 3 days, it will be 5.2 billion gallons.” About 2.2 billion gallons were released from Friday to Sunday, local water districts said in a statement released Monday. That water was discharged into the dry lakebed of Tulare Lake, according to a letter from Sen. Alex Padilla to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. “Downstream entities used these releases for limited irrigation demand and groundwater recharge,” the statement said. “This release is extremely concerning,” Cooley said. “It’s providing zero benefit and putting California farmers at risk of water supply constraints in the coming The orange guy is clueless!

Has the American public ever been given the opportunity to let their elected officials know how they feel about USAID funding?
Now they can do that. Perhaps the Democrats will get the message.

Yeah, good one. Totally not gibberish at all, STINKY. By the way it's 45 & 47 now, and who knows?
Let's see... oil prices up, US stock market down. Inflation up, employment down. Trump, once again, proves he's as incompetent at government as he was at business.
I'll give it til the first round of US inflation data that includes the impact of this. Doubt it will last a year.
I don't know anything about economics. But maybe somebody here can answer this for me. Why would... knowledgeable people compare the economy of the Great Depression with the economy of 2025, one hundred years later? Call me crazy, but maybe, just maybe, the fundamentals are a bit different?
Like I said. I really don't know.
Mexicans and Canadians know what they stand to lose better than our so-called experts.
because it is D talking point and pride that FDR saved USA!!
Omg. How did I miss the "conflu" pun? It's hilarious.
I'm just hearing about it now on this new Matt Orfalea video .
I'm still out of the loop, all these years later.
Stock market is doing fine, Bidenflation is down.
Might want to try some basic math and economics next time.
Oh that's right!
Your side thinks math is toxic masculinity or toxic colonial heteronormity.
Or something...
Example:
A self-inflated sense of importance -- They refuse to debate issues.

Scott is trying to reassure himself that being uploaded to a server is the same as having an immortal soul, and he won't miss his body. This is what psychedelic mushrooms can do to an intellect, stretch the boundaries on reality, sure, but maybe too far.
Elon looking at Dept of Education now…. This will be very interesting.
"in 2020, how the FDA delayed approval of the COVID vaccine"
No, that was Pfizer who delayed checking or announcing their test results.

I don't remember you complaining in 2020 when Mark Zuckerberg's people had read/write access to to Wisconsins official voter rolls, and a mandate to win the state for Biden.

Now he wants us to believe him on this matter.
"
Has the American public ever been given the opportunity to let their elected officials know how they feel about USAID funding?"
Yes, every Congressional election.
Announcement of a plan isn’t action. It is not even like spending $7.5 billion on EV charging stations. It is just an announcement.
The difference is now there is an incentive to get the work done.
The weak-minded we will always have with us, but we will not always have Kak the Weakest.

Are you suffering from an illness that limits your ability to comprehend language? Do you understand the notion of psychological projection? Denial?

When we get to 29% unemployment we can make that comparison. Tell that to your average Democrat or MSNBC commentator.
WTI crude was $78 bbl on Jan 15. It was $77.39 on Jan 20. It closed Monday at $73.16, and down over 2% just today.
You should be VERY WORRIED, DINKY. VERY, VERY WORRIED.
Um, Kak--you also said that Trump knows his tariffs will "fizzle into nothing." About an hour ago on this very thread.
Shrodinger's Trump.
For some reason Kak thinks the richest man in the world and the billionaire who hired him are as driven by "tax cuts for the rich," which is supposedly more evil than avoiding taxes altogether like the Biden Crime Family. Must be something in the water on Bainbridge Island.
Governor Murphy is crying now that his televised comments about harboring an illegal alien from Ice went viral, isn't he?? Wahhhhh...."I was misinterpreted"claims the idiot who blatantly said he was going to house one in his garage attic, and "Good luck to the feds to come and get them???" Okay, it's time to put these law breakers behind bars....
Put teh bottle of Jameson down, ya ruddy-faced leprechaun!
Instead of digging for a pony in a pile of manure, Rich is digging for manure in a pile of ponies.
@planetgeo, if the Dumbocrats do start something, I hope they start with my neighborhood. I retired to a development full of young, blue collar couples with small kids — and gun safes that are not empty. There are two houses without guns because the husbands are veterans with severe PTSD. We know who they are and we will look out for them.
Well, he IS a caprophile.
Trump celebrated the move in posts to Truth Social post on Friday and Sunday, declaring, “the water is flowing in California,” and adding the water was “heading to farmers throughout the State, and to Los Angeles.”
There are two major problems, water experts said: The newly released water will not flow to Los Angeles, and it is being wasted by being released during the wet winter season.
“They were holding extra water in those reservoirs because of the risk that it would be a dry summer,” Heather Cooley, director of research for California water policy organization the Pacific Institute. “This puts agriculture at risk of insufficient water during the summer months.”
On Friday, Trump posted that 1.6 billion gallons was being released adding that “in 3 days, it will be 5.2 billion gallons.”
About 2.2 billion gallons were released from Friday to Sunday, local water districts said in a statement released Monday.

Good. China is who we have to reshore our industries from.
LLR-democratical Rich has now staked out about 6 different "interpretations" on Trump's actions and he actually seems to believe thats a great strategy.
Some sinus issues periodically rob me of my sense of smell.
I like to cook, and let me tell you! When you can't taste what you've spent hours preparing, it's a real bummer.
Or take crackers, for example: if you can't taste them you might as well gnaw at a piece particleboard.

Maybe Scott is happy to dine on wood chips and fried sawdust.
Blinking — so much blinking. 🇺🇸 He’s not blinking when it comes to dismantling our democracy though.
LOL
Keep trying Abacus Boy!
