It's US bases in Greenland in return for taking up the Danish welfare state and free STD clinics.

The PM of Denmark stated in effect that Denmark would defer to whatever Greenland decides, i.e., it's their choice, not Denmark's.
So, not such folly after all? Isn't it interesting how he who envisions it, can sometimes initiate the movement toward its becoming a reality.
Europe should welcome the move. Otherwise it's China or Putin.

A thousand years from now Greenland will still be covered 80%+ of ice. It probably isn't worth anything at all but, if the Greenlanders are smart, they will declare independence and sell the island to the U.S. and then move Martha's Vineyard or the Hamptons- stay out of Pacific Palisades, however.
Someone suggested renaming it Orangeland after the acquisition. I like it. And not just to honor their liberator. Give everyone there a Hummer to change their climate back to what it used to be, and cultivate orange orchards everywhere. It will be like early California before the Democrats turned it into a hellscape.

Greenland is the island nation formerly billed as green in warmer times before climate change froze its assets.
Government of Greenland probably already realizes it's far more advantageous for native Greenland residents to be governed as a colony or state of USA than Denmark. Greenland is a frigid Puerto Rico, in regards to the governance costs associated with significant social problems of its residents, as noted by Hardin in 1st post here.
I sure do NOT want us to "own" Greenland. Heaven forbid the loose talk about adding states come to fruition. BUT.... if we get a commitment for strategic issues that are cost effective, leaving Greenland to the Greenlandies well and good.

The US already has bases they need in Greenland without paying anything (at lease publicly). And it's the Danish Govt. that is paying for the wlefare state for Greenlanders. So solely from a security point of view, the US currently has the best deal it can get in Greenland.
This is not about US security, but about the natural resources that Greenland may have.
Bingo. There is a deal to be made. I say make it a state and carve out eastern WA, OR, and CA as new Red states.
The PM of Denmark has no choice in the matter as Greenland is not Denmark's to sell. Greenland's colonial status ended in 1953 and in 1979 it got home rule.

When I was graduating from school in the early 70’s the big engineering companies were recruiting like crazy for engineering and construction people to sign up for two year assignments in Thule Greenland. They were paying 3X the going rates in the U.S.

It's recently come to light that the Danes subjected young Greenland girls, down to the age of 13, to involuntary birth control devices. I think this went on as late as the early 70's. This and other scandals have given added motivation to the Greenlanders wanting full independence. From what I've read in the papers here in Norway, it's a matter of when and not if Greenland will be independent.
Our country is a huge homogenization machine. Greenland wants to stay Greenland. Good for them. Things might have been different decades back, but those days are gone.

Tina, I think 30 or 40 thousand Greenlanders will be cheaper to accomodate than one Kardashian.
I think that's the idea. We get to build bases. They get protection, Medicare and pay no US taxes.
I find it helpful to imagine Trump as a 78 year old version of Eric Cartman. After that, it is much easier to not react to anything he says.
The US already has the bases in Greenland for free and no need to pay subsidies or get entangld in any domestic Greenland problems. Can't be more cost effective than that. But this isn't about US military security, this is about controlling Greenland's resources.
