Dave Chappelle does the opening monologue on "Saturday Night Live."

Here it is, from last night, all 17 minutes:

Watching someone smoke on TV - actually, and live - takes me back to when I was young and it was an every night thing on Carson. Thanks Dave.

And wearing a suit and a tie. All old school. What year is this?

Robert Marshall বলেছেন...

"Have empathy for displaced people, whether they're in Palisades, or Palestine."

Well, okay, but are we allowed also to consider the extent to which they made their own bed?

Lem Vibe Bandit বলেছেন...

That was very good. Had me cracking up a few times.

Shouting Thomas বলেছেন...

I have zero interest in stand-up. That said, Chappelle is funny.

Off to play for the Methodists, who do know how to take a joke.

Breezy বলেছেন...

Hostages are displaced people. Is that what he meant by Palestine? No, I don’t think so.

Funny monologue though. The Diddy part was hilarious - :).

ron winkleheimer বলেছেন...

It was funny. However, the fact that the migrants in Springfield are there legally does not make it right. I'm sure the factory owners and landlords were thrilled to get 30,000 people to exploit, so they could keep wages down and increase their rent incomes, doesn't mean the current residents, who are actual US citizens, are automatically bigots and drug addicts because they don't want to work for a pittance.

The burning land in Mississippi joke exposes the part of the climate scam where the proof of more extreme weather is the higher value of insurance claims…

Eric the Fruit Bat বলেছেন...

The seriousness at the ending reminded me of Cliff Clavin doing standup but without the humor: "But seriously folks, on a serious note, I just want to say, . . . drinking and driving, . . . what's up with that?"

The man is genius.

Excellent monologue. Nice suit, but he should have unbuttoned the middle button of his jacket.

Spiros বলেছেন...

Is Chappelle saying no refuge, no rest for the Jew! Or is he saying that, in order to end the "apartheid," Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs must share a single state with full and equal rights, including the freedom of movement, equal access to government services and so on, for all the people living in Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip? Is there a difference between smashing Israel to pieces and a one state solution? How would Israeli Jews stop the much larger Muslim population from engaging in religious cleansing, a type of cultural genocide, against the Jews (and the Christians) if there are no walls between the two communities?

Howard বলেছেন...

All new material and he killed.

Aggie বলেছেন...

'Legally' is a funny way to describe applying a workaround whose intention has been ignored and which has been bent well past its breaking point. The government pretended that economic preferences are the same thing as political asylum.

Bob Boyd বলেছেন...

Have empathy for displaced people, unless they're poor whites in the rust belt.

Mazo Jeff বলেছেন...

I think the point of the Springfield Ohio episode is not "they're eating the pets" monolog. It was the "legally" influx of 20,000 people into a town of 50,000!
Can you imagine "legally" moving 20,000 Hispanic people into a town of 50,000 primarily African American! Do you think there might be some concern?

He’s funny. How tiring the swipes at Trump, though. He’s small and petty but we ignore the current vegetable and the vindictiveness of his handlers what actually run things. Trump is neither btw, it’s just your big brain is too occupied to figure that out. I don’t approve of incentivizing more terrorism, either…

rehajm বলেছেন...

…that one stuck with me, too, fsr…

AMDG বলেছেন...

It was a funny set but he is wrong about Carter. Carter was both a bad President and a worse former President.

Blair বলেছেন...

Brilliant stuff. I didn't agree with it all, but he was funny, which is the point of Dave Chappelle. He should give Stephen Colbert some pointers on that.

Iman বলেছেন...

Court jester.

Jaq বলেছেন...

When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai who had pursued them into the field and wilderness, and when every last one of them had fallen by the sword, all the Israelites returned to Ai and put it to the sword as well.

A total of twelve thousand men and women fell that day—all the people of Ai.

Joshua did not draw back the hand that held his battle lance until he had devoted to destruction all who lived in Ai.

Israel took for themselves only the cattle and plunder of that city, as the LORD had commanded Joshua.

Has Netanyahu repudiated the Book of Joshua? I think that Jesus did, which is where Jimmy Carter got his philosophy. The best thing about this cease fire is the story that has been going around the Israeli press that Netanyahu at first refused to meet with Trump's emissary because it was Shabbat, and Trump's emissary told him that he didn't give a shit about Shabbat, and to be there. And Netanyahu dutifully showed up to the meeting, and accepted the deal that had been negotiated months earlier. Of course with Biden being non compos mentis, there was no way that he could force Netanyahu to do anything, no matter what "Dr Jill" thought, because Bibi had people among Biden's puppet masters. Chappelle can't help that he doesn't get complete information from the news, but he really should give Trump credit for what he did.

For those of you who enjoy all of the killing and maiming, I am thinking that you are not going to like the Trump presidency that much.

He's great but this was not his greatest 17 minutes. I'll give it a 7.6

20,000 hatians were shipped in by Biden and plonked down in Springfield Ohio. Almost no one in Springfield wanted them in such numbers or at all. No one voted for it. Its not even clear if the legally required vetting was done.

BTW, the population of Springfield prior to the invasion was 58,000. Would Martha's Vinyard or Madison WI welcome 20,000 haitians? I doubt it.

I refuse to watch anymore of Millionarie Chappelle jokes when he states white people in Ohio were "refusing to work" and the Haitians are doing jobs "they ddint' want to do". All of this is a lie. Obviously if the Government plops 20,000 people in your community and pays for their rent and food, your landlords and store owners will become more prosperous. Further, there will a massive low-wage workforce willing to do any job at any wage.

None of this will help the massive numbers of Springfield residents who don't own apartment buildings or hotels or grocery stores. Or run factories requiring cheap low skill workers. They will see their standard of living decline. Suddenly, they will have thousands of Haitans in their schools, using their Governmental agencies and generally being a burden. Their house values will go down. Go back to Springfield in 5 years. You will find it almost entirely Haitian.

The didn't want to live Haiti Springfield but now they do.

Iman বলেছেন...

Twenty thousand Haitians couldn’t make me change my mind
If I had to make the choice between the Trump man and the horse’s behind

Iman বলেছেন...

The guy is able to find humor in just about anything, but he has a few blind spots.

wildswan বলেছেন...

I'm voting red because my city's got the blues.
That's the direction of the country. And Dave Chappell is pretty funny about those blues.
And he's funny because he's silent about how people in LA counted on Karen Bass. And they counted on the LAFD. But Karen and the LAFD hired fewer firefighters to stop fires and Karen Bass and the LAFD didn't maintain the firetrucks and Karen Bass and the LAFD encouraged the homeless to come to San Francisco and camp out in the uncut brushwood which meant more and more fires. And then Karen Bass and the LAFD hired firefighters who said, "If you need me, you're in the wrong place." That's the Dem motto; that's the refrain to "Dem City Blues." "If you need me, you're in the wrong place."

And also that's what Hamas tells the people of Gaza - another thing Dave Chappell did not mention. Hamas says: "Water, food, electricity - if you need Hamas for an real economy or a real government, you're in the wrong place. It's Israel that delivers those things to its citizens. We are Hamas and Hamas is Terror R Us and we declared war on Israel by a sneak attack in which we raped and murdered and kidnapped and burned alive. And then came hell for payback. And we of Hamas were shielded from the payback in underground tunnels and so we stuck it out for a long time while unshielded Gaza and the Gazans took the half the blows. Sadz but ... c'mon, man - reality. Palisades to Palestine - if you need us, you're in the wrong place."

dbp বলেছেন...

Chappelle thought Carter was great, because he was brave to venture into Palestinian lands. Carter was smart enough to know he was in no danger. The Palestinians cheered him and he knew that they'd cheer. They know he hated the Jews almost as much as they do.

Michael Fitzgerald বলেছেন...

"For those of you who enjoy all of the killing and maiming"- Surely you must be talking about yourself and the others here who are in support of the murder and rape of unarmed and innocent children, women, and men as long as they are Jews.

Kakistocracy বলেছেন...

If you can’t laugh at a well-told, deeply offensive joke aimed at you, you’ve misunderstood the cathartic, transformative power of comedy. Eventually, we’re all the butt of the joke.

That is a really nice suit. Just perfect fit and tailoring. I want to know where he shops.

Lazarus বলেছেন...

Saturday night, I was hate watching Saturday Night the movie about the first episode of Saturday Night Live. It actually turned out to be pretty good. I could do without the Lorne Michael's hero narrative and the caricatures of the network censor and executive, but it was great to see so many people I knew from television again, played by actors who are the same age that Gilda, John, Dan, Garrett, Laraine and the others were back then.

After it was over I tuned into SNL and caught the monologue. I was impressed. He was funny and relatively even handed. A joke directed at one side was balanced with a joke aimed at the other. On the whole he's an admirable guy. His parents were professors who were (understandably) involved in the agitations of the 1960s, but he's managed to remain relatively well grounded in reality.

Jonathan Burack বলেছেন...

Jaq, I look forward to the way Trump is likely to disappoint totally your hopes. In the meantime, what you think you know about that meeting with Bibi is likely near totally wrong. We'll see, I suppose. But I am betting Hegseth's comment about the need to kill ALL Hamas butchers is closer to what is in the works than anything you expect.

Lazarus বলেছেন...

Carter, of all people, isn't in favor of a one-state solution. He said later that his reference to "apartheid" referred not to Israel itself but the West Bank, which was divided between settlements, security zones, and Palestinian "Bantustans." I don't know if that was made clear in the book itself, but probably so.

Narayanan বলেছেন...

Former Illinois resident বলেছেন...

20,000 Haitians, their social services, medical care, and children's education paid by the taxpayers in Springfield -- all told, likely a one on one ratio between recently arrived quasi-legal migrant and homegrown taxpayer. Dreadful situation for those Springfield taxpayers compelled to financially-support so many suddenly arriving freeloaders.

Peachy বলেছেন...

"I have snitch energy"

omg - doubled over.

Narr বলেছেন...

Dark suit and cig--a throwback.

Pretty good overall, but it's always a mistake for comics to go serious at the close. And surely the script called for him to do the "Live from New York it's Saturday Night!"?

Peachy বলেছেন...

The eternal victim Palestinians have had numerous chances for an offical state. They decline every time. Too much fun being an eternal victim.

rehajm বলেছেন...

Also, opposition to spending billions to import ten million plus people illegally, pay for their foodclotheshousingmedical until they can be counted in this year’s census does not mean you’re unsympathetic to legal immigration in sustainable numbers…
