"New York Rep. Elise Stefanik has accepted President-elect Donald Trump’s offerto be his enforcer as United Nations ambassador...."

The NY Post reports.

The 40-year-old upstate Republican, who helped force out two Ivy League presidents with her sharp questioning on campus antisemitism, will the lead Trump’s “America first” and pro-Israel message in Turtle Bay... Stefanik, the No. 4 House Republican, has been a close Trump ally, including serving on his ceremonial defense team in 2020 during his first impeachment trial for pressuring Ukraine to investigate alleged Biden family corruption.

If that was a demanding post, Nimrata Haley wouldn't have been able to do it. Still, good for Stefanik. It's a fine audition if she wants to be entrusted with more demanding roles.

She's been touted as a future Prez candidate for the Rs. This assignment is so she can pick up her foreign policy chops. I prefer her fighting in Washington but, good for her.

What happens to her house seat?

Clyde said...

As I said earlier in the open thread, the United Nations is really not going to like Elise Stefanik. An organization that runs on lies will hate a truth-teller.

RCOCEAN II said...

They're going to need her house seat. It'd be stupid if they lose the house because Trump gave her a UN job.

RCOCEAN II said...

The UN job is a nothing burger, so house seat aside, I'm she got it.

Dixcus said...

He should avoid this until the House question is settled. Just don't pick people yet ... line them up, but don't pick them.

can she keep her seat in the house?

Iman said...

She’s informed, eloquent and pugnacious. Whatever she chooses to do, she’ll do well.

For a chuckle, teh WaPoo editorial board castigates the Democrat Party for hiding Biden’s senility. Can’t make this scheisse up, lol.

Love Stefanik, but agree this is an unwise move right now. And even thinking downstream, her potential is much bigger than this role provides. This is one of those cases when it's good to disagree with our chosen leader and provide counsel for him to reconsider his options.

Leland said...

Trump, please hold off on picking House Representatives to work on your Administration.

When has any UN Ambassador been able to "enforce" anything?

Wince said...

I thought it'd be Tulsi Gabbard to the UN.

Is Stefanik's a "safe" NY House seat?

Dave Begley said...

I don't know or care is she is Jewish, but she will push back hard against all that anti-Semitic rhetoric. And the US should cut wayback on its UN "dues."

Mabye she's getting her foreign policy chops to be Vance's running mate - he could do a lot worse.

Yes.

NY 21 has been a reliably Trump district since 2016. It's rural and includes the Adirondacks. Pretty sure there's high confidence on Team Trump that a special election will yield another R there. Don't worry.

I'm reading she's in a +25R district. Very safe. I hope they get a safe majority in the House.

Stafanik is very impressive.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

She might be leading a very consequential four to 12-year span where the UN either shapes up or we blow it up. For sure we will be defunding UNWRA and any other terrorist aiding program.

"This is one of those cases when it's good to disagree with our chosen leader and provide counsel for him to reconsider his options."

Stephanik is perfectly capable and savvy enough to determine for herself what is good for her future in terms of immediate and near term moves.

Drago said...

"I hope they get a safe majority in the House."

No majority is safe in the House or Senate with the GOPe-ers running around at about 50% of the elected republicans in DC.

MadTownGuy said...

@ rehajm, why not Minot?

Limited blogger said...

Fantastic appointment. Special election in her district will install another reliable conservative vote.

Aggie said...

Maybe. The Democrats will produce a very conservative-sounding candidate that appeals to the demographic, and will spend millions to get them over the line. They'll say they've learned their lesson, and claim 'inside' powers of influence and persuasion will be brought to bear to curb those troublesome party members. Marc Elias will be as heavily involved as he is right now, manufacturing winning ballots in all the remaining undecided seats.

Aggie said...

Tulsi, Junior', Tucker, and to some extent, Rogan were all useful to make sure Trump's message was getting out to the people. That doesn't mean they are 'inner circle', necessarily. I predict Junior' will be the first to go sour. But Tulsi is a career politician who has recognized that Republicans are better aligned with her brand. She still has plenty of misaligned issues with the rock-ribbed, though - and so does Junior'.

Stefanik is a trusted political ally, and she might have asked for the job.

Yes, we agree on that, however the issue here is whether this is an unwise move to make while the House majority is still in question and her appointment might tip the balance, which would be a disastrous trade-off.

friscoda said...

Tulsi should head Veterans' Affairs because she is not in sync with most of the Republican policies and in another post will be a problem. She is perfect for the VA which needs to do a much, much better job for servicemen.

I find her none of those things.. neither informed, pugnacious or eloquent. I actually find her ignorant of basic information and more of a bull in a china shop than an elegant t representation of a representative of her district. I lump her in with AOC, Bobo, Marsha Blackburn, and Nancy Mace, say whatever gets you attention and nothing smart to back it up.

Kakistocracy said...

I doubt this seat will flip, given how that district has gone the last ten years, seems likely to be filled by another Republican. But the House will be down one Republican until a special election is called by the governor. And she can delay the election as long as possible.

The anti-neoconservative rhetoric among Trump's supporters is incoherent. Why is Elise Stefanik not neoconservative, and Mike Pompeo is? I think the driver of these appointments is the appointee's perceived loyalty to Trump. She is a good choice, though.

How about Alaska? Not boring to me, but would be for them. Also many other practical advantages: close to the other 2 superpowers, could put it so remote that terrorist attack is less of a problem, would create jobs for natives, etc.

Or you could get the ChiComs to build one of their unofficial islands in Kachemak Bay or the Bering Strait! That would be totally secure and keep the diplomats’ minds on task.

Niki was a very good UN ambassador. We can do better.

tastid212 said...

The post of UN Ambassador can be more high profile than substantive. Republican presidents have used it to great effect. Jeane Kirkpatrick was the Mama Bear of them all, and Nikki was quite good too. Dems see the post differently. Can anyone think of the name of Biden's UN Ambassador off the top of their head? Has she said or done anything memorable in the last 4 years? Stefanik will be an improvement and Trump trusts her.

MadisonMan said...

The Times calls the questioning of those Presidents "sharp"; I call it "revealing". It did reveal the truth, which was the problem for the Presidents.

James K said...

According to this, Stefanik doesn't have to resign from the House immediately, and a special election has to take place within about 90 days. I'm not sure if that's from when she actually steps down or from when she announces that she will step down.

She's a junior neocon, but I think that she is more loyal to Trump. Her district is one of those dumping grounds that have to be made in order to bleed the Republicans out of the surrounding districts when you are designing a map to maximize Democrat House seats. I drive over there a lot, and it's Trump territory, solidly Trump. Though I did see one "This white man is voting for Harris" sign there.

Just asking questions (Jaq) said...

Didn't Vicky believe the Russiagate stuff? Which a handwritten note from the head of the CIA showed that they knew it was made up by the Hillary campaign within a day of the story coming out?

Oh yeah, and a FOIA release shows that the FBI knew that it was all made up campaign dirt by Hillary, who, BTW, misrepresented the expense as a "legal expense" and then used the lies to try to steal an election. In New York State this is an imprisonable felony, unless of course the law is only selectively prosecuted against Republicans... Naaah!
