"Imagine you are about to have a political argument with a close friend or family member. You are on opposing sides of the left-right rift...."

"Doesn’t it sometimes feel that it would be simpler if you each just brought over a small TV and left it running in the kitchen, tuned to your respective network, while the two of you went into the yard and talked about something about which you possess some original knowledge? Once you’re out there, talking like that, won’t it be nice to feel your pre-formed 'political' carapaces drop away? And won’t it be discouraging and alarming when, as soon as one of you slips up and utters a triggering word or phrase ('immigrant' or 'Trump' or 'politically correct' or 'eating cats and dogs,' for example), you veer back into your canned 'political' jargon, like actors suddenly aware that the scripts you’ve been given must, at all costs, be honored?"

Writes George Saunders, in "Five Thought Experiments Concerning the Underlying Disease/Our civic wells are poisoned. Why?" (The New Yorker).

Saunders is a fine writer, but I'll be cruelly neutral and give him the "civility bullshit" tag he deserves. If Kamala Harris had won, would he be urging us to abandon political speech and get back to the little life of the backyard about which we possess "original knowledge"?

I don’t have political arguments with close friends or family members, because we tend to talk about many other things than politics. Perhaps the New Yorker should try doing it.

No publication did more to poison the political environment than The New Yorker did in pushing the Russia collusion hoax. All the villains who pushed the hoaxes, served as conduits for CIA propaganda on the Ukraine War and participated in the lawfare against Trump are now begging for mercy. “Please don’t do to us what we did to you!”

Big Mike म्हणाले...

A Trump supporter does not have an argument with a leftie Democrat. We are the recipient of harangues, laced with epithets buttressed by made-up “facts” that are patently untrue, bullshit, conjectures, and bullshit conjectures. I have no plans to start an argument, but I will not concede one God-damned inch of ground to these deluded assholes.

People don't possess original knowledge of their own political beliefs or why they hold them? (Which is a separate subject from whether various claims and counterclaims are factually true.) Sounds like projection to me.

I think our culture might need some role modeling on this front. We’re being told it’s ok to turn our backs on friends and relatives who have differing political opinions, without really understanding what the differences are or why others may have drawn other conclusions than we have. We’re afraid we might change our mind, maybe…. That would be intolerable(!), but it’s how we grow.

I am astounded at the viciousness and emotion of the Harris voters. They have been saying and doing the most hateful things. Among the most divisive is the concerted effort to damage otherwise healthy and warm relationships. My step daughter with whom I have developed a relatively close and cordial connection has asked her mom to instruct me to remain in another part of the house when she comes over, not to hug her, and only to say hello if passing by….because I voted for OrangeHitler. She and I never discuss politics so it is not part of the fabric of our conversations, but it is now apparently.

I’d like to think that it is not her intention, but it is clear to me that I am to be made to feel chastised and quarantined because of my vote for a political figure who won. My first inclination was to be gracious about it and give her space, but as the week has passed, I have become more pissed about it. It’s unlikely that without a word about it ever having passed between us, our relationship will ever be the same.

The oh so tolerant left.

I don't. It is NOT worth the trouble. If they don't share your politics there is not a damn thing you could say will dissuade them. Either they have already heard your arguments and don't agree OR they are too locked into their current positions and won't hear you/don't care. They are also your friends and family, just leave that crap outside.

Related, it seems that progressives CAN'T have conservative friends and will cut off friends/family over politics whereas most conservatives I know can maintain relationships with "everyone". They will just avoid politics when around "those people". There is more to life than politics unless politics is your life/religion.

@ Todd...agreed. My husband and I are "conservative" and voted for Trump. There is another couple that we often see at the local barista coffee shop who are very "liberal progressives". During the election, we all had an unspoken rule to not bring up politics. After the election, it was a spoken and agreed upon request.

Does the conversation sometimes veer into political? Yes, but we immediately change the subject...because we are intelligent adults with manners. We have great conversations with this couple on many other topics.. There are plenty of other things to discuss.

Otherwise...we just avoid being around people who are unable to be civil. Not worth the time or effort.

I said "Yeah, that's the one. Do you have that in paperback?"

About a year and a half back I was hanging out with the bass player in my band after a jam. Don't know how it started (I think it was me saying "All political violence is on the Left") but Trump came up. He's the only close friend I have who leans left but he's very common sense about immigration, strong supporter of Israel, and hates woke BS. Anyway, he was down on Trump and sure he was going to jail for the "crimes" he committed. I told Chris that Trump hadn't really committed any crimes that weren't at heart a difference of opinion about presidential powers and further predicted the cases would all eventually be dismissed or fall apart. Then I delicately picked apart the myths of J6, "fine people" and the Russia hoax. He was shocked that I believed so strongly in Trump's innocence. It made him curious but only after OCT 7th did he start turning on the leftwing media and admitting the street violence was absolutely leftwing. He came to visit just before the election, but we didn't talk about any of this. I have a hunch he changed a lot of what he used to think about Trump. He did laugh when I flipped off a bunch of people waving Harris-Walz signs when we were coming back from the beach, after honking and waving for the pro-Trump rally nearby.
