"Am I the only one in the city being lectured on dates about Burning Man?..."

"... I hadn’t even finished chewing my first mouthful of pasta before his 37-minute tale began. (Yes, I timed it.) He fiddled excitedly with a loose dreadlock as I once again fell victim to an eternity of spiritual mansplaining. The formula was all too familiar. A compulsory mention of the 10 'core principles' of Burning Man, which, in more obnoxious settings, have also been referred to as 'the truths.' 'Inclusion is the core of our culture' he said. 'It’s written in the charter.'... [A]ttending Burning Man often costs a minimum of $5,000. And what kind of person my age, early career, has nine days to spend frolicking in a desert?..."

Writes Cate Twining-Ward, in "Men, Please Stop Talking About Burning Man/Am I the only woman meeting Burning Mansplainers on dates?" (NYT)(free-access link).

"Not long ago, I agreed to meet a seemingly normal non-Burner stranger at an Upper West Side speakeasy.... Everything was going decently well until I noticed his feet — which were bare. Bare as in he was not wearing shoes or socks. It was February. His explanation? After attending Burning Man, he had committed to building a new routine based on the 'authentic actions' he had learned there, one aspect of which included running to work (at a hedge fund) barefoot..."... [He described his] decorated campground powered by propane so that music, air conditioning and light shows could run 24 hours a day. 'I’m curious to know your thoughts on unlimited generator use in respect to principal eight,' I said...."

Using the term "mansplainer" should be an indicator of the real root of your problems in this area.

Tina Trent म्हणाले...

I can’t imagine finding so many burning man aficionados in Manhattan unless she was actively looking for them to abuse them. And what is the carbon footprint of her pursuits?

rrsafety म्हणाले...

Men. Run, don’t walk, from women who use the word “mansplaining”.

Dave Begley म्हणाले...

Burning Man is a complete scam. $5k? And the Left has way too much money and time.

Mr Wibble म्हणाले...

Guys really into Burning Man probably also share a lot of other traits, ones which she values highly. She's basically self-selected into that dating pool.

many (MANY!) prog women are:
shaving their heads
claiming that they will "never" have sex with another man.. EVER!!
crying and wailing and moaning about some thing that happened earlier this month

This is GREAT NEWS!
the Prog left have become The Shakers
Their chix "claim" that they will NOT procreate..
*if* their chix DO (somehow) get knocked up; they will Murder their babies
*if* their babies are (somehow) born.. The Prog moms will drug and castrate them
win win!

In 30 years.. WHO will be a Prog? (besides 60 year old lesbians?)

Mary Beth म्हणाले...

I looked at her webpage and a social media profile for her. I 100% see why these men are telling her about Burning Man.

Sean Gleeson म्हणाले...

Sorry I just can't get over the writer saying "principal eight," and the NYT copy editor actually printing that.

Christopher B म्हणाले...

Yeah, she's kind of ignoring the one factor all those dates have in common ... she agreed to meet them.

Dixcus म्हणाले...

Also explains the testosterone-free men in her orbit.

Dixcus म्हणाले...

Of course, AFTER you get the hookup.

Bob Boyd म्हणाले...

She should inform on them. She should turn them all in.
According to my sources, Burning Man will be raided. Everyone there will be placed under arrest. They won't be taken away, however. On the contrary, they will remain there. A high, electric fence will be built around the site. And some goon towers with search lights. It will become a federal detention facility, the Burning Man Re-education Camp and Vocational Laboratory where, after a big, beautiful infrastructure build out, the inmates will learn to make the finest steak knives in the world. They will work hard, but there will be profit sharing.

This is one of those anthropological studies in which I have no interest. Like travel writing to put it in Althousian terms.

"Burners are, in my eyes, demonstrating just how deeply buried they are in an echo chamber of unrecognized privilege and empty consumption"

Cate Twining-Ward is approximately 30. She attended a $60,000 a year private high school in Brooklyn after spending her early childhood in Samoa. She is an environmental justice warrior who currently works for the military contractor Booz Allen Hamilton. Most importantly - she is a vegan. There are over 20 million men aged 25-35 in the USA, the less than 250,000 of them have attended burning man.

Upper West Side.
Burning Man.
Mansplaining.

All of this is too...on brand for me.

A friend of mine (former student worker) who is a judge in a western city told me that he has been to at least the last two Burnings(?), including the mud disaster.

Said he and his wife selected a spot to park this time that was a good walk from everyone else--even sent a picture.

I know little about Burning Man ($5k?, sheesh), but commented that he was getting away from the crowd among the getting away from the crowd crowd.

Probably yes.

I laughed at Burning Mansplainer.

RCOCEAN II म्हणाले...

mmm...this doesn't sound right to me. I think she was hooked up with this guy because she wanted to meet a burning man - and write an article. That's why she sat there for 37 minutes while he talked. Who does that, other than a reporter out for a story?

And girls, if you don't want to be "Mansplained" then speak up. Don't sit there listening for 37 minutes, and then complain. And who are these women anyway? Ive never met a single women in my entire life, who could sit still and listen to man for more than 5 minutes, without talking.

Joe Bar म्हणाले...

Ah, she's a "Climate Policy Consultant." That's why she's getting those matches. LOL. Appears to be quite young, also.

Joe Bar म्हणाले...

She's A "Climate Policy Consultant." That's why she matches with those guys. Probably has Manmade Climate Change in her profile.

Zach म्हणाले...

In my experience, people on dating sites who make Burning Man a big part of their personality tend to post pictures of themselves at Burning Man and mention it in their bio. If it matters that much to you, it's easily avoided.

For the 37 minute tale ... she's never learned how to change the subject on a date?

In dating, as in life, your experience will be better if you try to make the date successful rather than mining the disasters for clicks.

Lazarus म्हणाले...

Time for Cate Twining-Ward to go full on 4B.

Maybe she should take it up to 7B or even 11B.

Jupiter म्हणाले...

If I met someone who had been to Burning Man and wanted to talk about it, I think there might be some aspects I would find interesting. Entertaining, even. But most people aren't great story-tellers. To get to the good stuff, you have to ask the right questions.

What do you expect when you date the California soy boys? Also, I think that it's really rude and simplistic to refer to everything that a man says that annoys you as "mansplaining."

There two are totally made for each other. She just hasn't realized it.

loudogblog म्हणाले...

It's also really bad for the local environment. "Hey, let's go into the wilderness, generate a lot of pollution and set giant things on fire."

And the state of California actually tells us that we can't have outdoor BBQs or fires in our fireplaces for many days out of the year.

The only thing more worthless than a Burner is a climate policy consultant, especially after January 20th.

SteveSc म्हणाले...

This article is an excellent example of why the NYT has lost so much readership and relevance.

Tina Trent म्हणाले...

As a climate policy princess, I’m sure her carbon footprint for flying to just one conference at a chic resort far exceeds some guy using a generator in the desert for a couple of days.

I’m sure she flies many times a year. I seriously doubt she doesn’t get enough vacation time to go to Burning Man if she wanted to. It sounds uniquely awful, but nobody is forced to go.

How did harpysplaining replace journalism so darn fast? It seems as little as two years ago, it wasn’t every other article.

Tina Trent म्हणाले...

Why does the Times depict her as a woman of color when she is white? And yes, she has been flying around the world nonstop since she was a child and continues to do so. Her carbon footprint probably exceeds an entire year of Burning Man.

Linda Fox म्हणाले...

It reminds me of meeting up with my high school best friend, who got deeply into psychedelic culture for around 20 years, before finding her place in a trad church. Either way, I was listening to stories of how her life changed in radical ways, and how I ought to try it.
After she moved to a new place, she toned down the “How I found THE ANSWER stuff”.
Now, she is bitter and filled with complaints about how badly her life turned out, and how much better I have it, because I’m lucky to be married. Never asks how I’m doing, considers that my life had struggles too, and just goes on and on, until I make an excuse to end the call.

Greg The Class Traitor म्हणाले...

That's certainly problem #1

Greg The Class Traitor म्हणाले...

You don't have to do all 9 days of Burning Man.

So, apparently she desperately needs more mansplainers in her life

Greg The Class Traitor म्हणाले...

$5k is you rented a large RV or belong to a group with a huge footprint

$550 / person / day is quite the experience.

IOW, I think she's full of shit on this, too
