Conviction were from another country. They entered, claimed asylum, fingerprints and whatever identifying information (maybe documents) were collected, a date to appear for a hearing on the asylum claim is provided, and they are released until their court date. An investigation then occurs on the information provided, they might have done one with the initial data but likely they lied, so it takes a few more weeks or months before the actual identity is verified as a criminal. That investigation will go against their asylum hearing, but they need to appear. Except we have sanctuary areas that when a foreigner is arrested, they are released before ICE can come pick them up. Indeed, some jurisdictions have flat out said they will not hold criminals for ICE. Note, those jurisdictions didn't just pick up the person on the street on some warrant by ICE. They were picked up for a crime committed within the jurisdiction, ICE finds out, and the jurisdiction still releases the person.
I wonder if anyone else noticed something strange about Kamala's immigration speech last night. She delivered it from a teleprompter--nothing wrong with that--standing in front of the red and white stripes of a large American flag. Nothing wrong with that. But her speech (presumably delivered from Douglas Arizona after her border visit) was interrupted at times by applause from the audience. My only problem--the camera never panned to the audience. I was left to wonder whether the campaign was "sweetening" the sound track. That's okay to "sweeten" things if you are or were producing a mindless 1980s tv comedy series. But "sweetening" things with a nonexistent or miniscule audience. I dare say that's just not cricket. Or since the speech was delivered in Cochise County--cattle country, I think by BS-Ometer just went off.

Too many critics here of the Biden-Harris record are also critics of what they call the GOPe. I fear that (if they bother to vote at all -- they may be too busy filing blog comments) they'll vote only for Trump and ignore the Congressional and Senate candidates. But under our system, there's just so much that a President can do if the Congress doesn't support him. If there are Democrats in power in the House and/or the Senate, do you think they will be more likely to give a new President Trump the support he needs than the "GOPe? VOTE STRAIGHT REPUBLICAN IN 2024! It may not work, but it's the best chance we've got.
Suffice to say the capture, detainment, prosecution, and conviction of these illegals will paralyze the United States for decades to come. Probably dwarfing the cost for the entire Apollo Program in dollars.

Every attempt I've made to find clear data on the numbers that have come in and the classifications (refugees, special admits of various types, asylum claimants, and "gotaways") of the immigrants been largely fruitless. It seems deliberately made difficult to dig out.
And, seriously, am I supposed to believe the "gotaway" number. It's the number they detected but didn't contact plus, I think, their guess of the number they simply never saw.

Exactly this. Who can believe anything this government reports? If they admit to 30,000 the true number might be ten times that. South and Central America relieved their overcrowded prisons by putting them on the train to America when Biden/Harris opened the border to anyone who could make the trip. Achilles, would that you were right. I am surrounded by white, liberal, college-educated women who will vote for her, and young couples with Harris posters in their yards. The only thing that has changed - and it is a welcome sign - is that the Trump supporters are now more visible.

Lots of Harris/Walz yard signs in our small Wisconsin city, probably mostly virtue-signaling "I'm a college educated white-collar AWFL". Have yet to meet a local guy who actually supports Harris/Walz ticket, seems mostly the wives. We're experiencing this summer a sudden steep jump in street crimes (car burglaries, bike and garage thefts, "known assailant" shootings and knifings, drug busts and overdoses). This crime spike is likely related to "recently-arriving migrants", a visible influx present downtown, as well as the "from Milwaukee" low-income (mostly on social welfare and/or unemployed) population which arrived during past decade. Published in weekly local newspapers' reports on criminal proceedings at county court; see the names and reach your own conclusions; our formerly bucolic small-town ambiance is getting a blast of urban reality.
Ignorance is bliss.
