"For some of the schools, the migrants coming here has been a godsend because we’ve lost so many other kids."

"Some schools were being threatened with whether we’re going to be able to keep the doors open. I push back on a lot of the kind of negative politics that people talk about with migrants. This is a city of immigrants. I mean, that’s the uniqueness of New York. We never make it easy for immigrants who are coming. But they find their way. And the same thing is going to happen here."

Said David C. Banks, quoted in "Migrants Have Been a ‘Godsend,’ New York Schools Chief Says/In an interview, Chancellor David C. Banks said migrants had helped schools that were bleeding students. He also promised a big new role for artificial intelligence" (NYT).

Why were they bleeding students? Pray tell.

My favorite part of the influx into my local school district is the pregnant middle schoolers, that’s a new one for me

Corporate greed pales in comparison to State greed.

Those kids will now be subjected to indoctrination, and may get some education in the process, but not enough to help them survive in real life, unless they seek it on their own.

Are the migrants really that rich? Or does this explain why the Mayor is begging for buses to be turned back to Texas?

The left is devouring itself. Too many special interests with too much to lose, even while the policies become as popular as poison ivy.

natatomic said...

The schools were bleeding students because they were shitty schools with shittier results. Thank God we now have a whole new cohort of kids we can dumb down and indoctrinate.

"Artificial intelligence" is exactly what schools have been producing in the last couple of generations' graduates.

Just export teachers to whatever sh*thole country they're coming from and teach them there.

That some schools are being topped-off in numbers and kept open by an illegal immigrant influx does not mitigate their drain on the entire school system.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Right. The ESL programs were hugely overtaxed BEFORE the invasion, and that was when most illegals spoke one common language, Spanish. And now it's a godsend to have to teach English as a Second Language course in Mandarin, Russian, Arabic, Portugese, Czech, French and Persian?

I'm not buying it.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

I'm getting the sneaky suspicion this mayor McCheese has no idea what the hell is going on his school district. He just wants all that Federal cash to keep on flowing. Graft and patronage are the mothers milk of Democrat politics.

The local school district has gone from 7% hispanic to 35% in the last six years. Unexpected benefit: our soccer program has gotten really good.

Migrants, what bullshit. They are illegal alien invaders. Who's paying for all of this public employee largess ? Are the illegals, he'll no. The taxpayers are, and the illegals are not taxpayers they are an enormous cost. You idiots drove students out of your failing, incompetently run schools. They should have been closed and employees terminated, saving money for those taxpayers. This isn't about anything except lining your pockets with taxpayer dollars. And aiding and abetting a criminal invasion by ever more welfare leeches. People who do not and will never be gainfully employed nor ever benefit society. Heh imagine that.

"Never made it easy" for immigrants? That may have been true in the past. But this administration is literally flying illegals into the U.S. to be housed and cared for at the expense of unconsenting taxpayers.

No one wants to buy the product he's selling. (No one in NY wants to produce consumers for the product he's selling, either.) Through the power of government, though, he can make us all pay for this product.

Fewer customers, fewer facilities, saving money: what a concept.

"But they find their way"

Usually, illegally or with phony asylum claims.

"Migrants Have Been a ‘Godsend,’"

Even by prog standards, it's such obvious BS. Saving the system by forcing taxpayers to pay more for illegal aliens? But it counts as a metagaffe: illegals serve prog interests as clientele and future voters, law and taxes be damned. In that sense, they are indeed a godsend.

Anyone who doesn't make a clear distinction between immigrant and illegal alien is a grifter and nothing they have to say on the subject is of any interest to me.

The teachers unions and the public schools need tax money coming in, or budgets would have to be cut, which would include payroll and jobs. The US birth rate is declining, so in order to keep their system alive, "migrants" have to fill the gap. It's not about the kids. It's about the money that flows into the education establishment. Always has been. WI Act 10 battle illustrated that clearly.

Gusty Winds said...

When my family moved to Elmhurst IL in 1977 I was starting the second grade and went to Washington School for 2nd and 3rd grade. Because of the diminished student population, four of the older grade schools were closed at the end of the 1979 school year, and students were consolidated. The older schools built in the 1920's were closed and torn down. They were once filled with Baby Boomers, but Gen X couldn't fill them.

Saving tax dollars is not in the greedy wheelhouse of the education establishment.

The current grift was based on the illusion of teaching students. The grift can now continue.

More reason for Gov. Abbott to keep bussing the immigrants to New York. In Texas, the schools are overrun, and we can't build them fast enough for the influx of new students. Texas should charge transportation fees to New York to help fund our schools.

While I hope the NYC schools chancellor is well-intentioned (although overhauling ways to teach reading is wrong-headed), the above statement reminds me of The Wire and Cutty's short stint as a truant officer.
“School gets a certain amount of money for each kid that shows up one day in September and one day in October … after that they don’t lose the government money”

Bingo. So, for schools that were total crap, a new batch of kids they can monetize, who can't escape, are a "Godsend".

Because otherwise the schools might actually have to start educating. And THAT is just not acceptable

In 1980 our city was swamped by the Mariel boatlift and that is more people then ny has taken in entire and it was one common language

Migrants doing jobs the natives just won’t do.

Richard said...

What you have to understand is that the purpose of the school system is to provide jobs for teachers and administrators. If schools were to close due to low enrollment, then they would lose their jobs. We have to prevent that from happening at all cost (pun intended). The fact is that the parents of these illegal alien children pay no taxes and moreover are supported by money from the government. Thus the taxpayers are being hit by a double penalty – paying for unneeded school personnel and paying to support the illegal aliens.

He says the quiet part out loud: the public schools aren't maintained to educate the children, rather the population of children must be maintained to support the public schools and employ the union members.

300-500 billion at last estimate. We could afford to pay the interest on the debt with that.

Those pesky migrants. Doing jobs that Americans won't do--like sending their kids to the public school indoctrination centers. The public schools in most of the country are failing to actually educate the children--but they can teach them how to put a condom on a cucumber, so there is that.

So, Texas governor Abbot and Fla. Governor DeSantis are doing God's work in sending illegals to NYC? Spread the word! Make it rain illegals on every sanctuary city and state.

Interested Bystander said...

The problem is who's paying for them? Their parents are likely working for low wages and on EBT and other forms of welfare. So the New York taxpayers pick up the tab and not just the people of NYC.

This message is mostly about recent immigrants to this country, and for those native Americans that support them.
Like most commenters on this thread I'm descended from immigrants to America. My ancestors came here from England 1620 and later, and Ireland and Germany 1865 and a little later.
You are not a hero just because your ancestors came here as immigrants, nor are you a villain for that reason.
When my ancestors came to America there were no immigration laws; now there are. I think a good public policy argument can be made for less-restrictive immigration laws. But until and unless our Government adopts such laws, they ought to enforce the laws that they are sworn by oath to enforce.

Mason G said...

Democrats ignore laws they don't like. They only enforce the laws they support, along with what they think should be laws, but aren't.
