Read something the other day- may have been here, maybe elsewhere, I read a lot of sources. But anyhow, it was about sunflowers, and people who grow them are saying that this year for the first time in memory, sunflowers aren't following the sun around. I haven't seen any sunflower fields around this year- I'm sure they're out there but on different fields then the ones I drive past. But walking around today in the afternoon I noticed about a dozen of so widely separated sunflowers in the nearby brush- and not one of them was pointed west toward the setting sun... I have a few times grown a few, and they have followed the sun around. And I've seen it in the fields in the past. Odd goings ons in the plant world.

I've been taking 1000mg of garlic extract every day this year, and so far, not a single chigger or tick. Not one - and I walk through tall grass, woods, moist lowlands every day. I was skeptical at first, but not now. It's a small gel cap, like a vitamin E pill. No smell or taste or anything that I can notice. And: so far, no vampires either, so I've got that going for me too.

I watched the Trump/Tulsi “town hall” in La Crosse, WI. Oh man, I wonder if Tulsi was thinking “They aren’t paying me enough to do this”. The town hall ended abruptly almost as if Trumps handlers were anxious to get him off stage. It was a mishmash of jumping from one subject to another without answering the very few questions he was actually asked.
Socialist Trump comes out for government funded elective health care (IVF) and against a 6-week abortion ban on the same day. At this point, it feels like Trump is about 3 days away from endorsing universal basic income.
I watched it too (didn't see the very beginning). I didn't see anything resembling your report. The questions were from the audience and I assume they wanted a diversity of topics. Trumps answers were pertinent and I detected no distress from Tulsi.
I may have just learned something about the new comments format. I have found the "comment box" to be virtually unusable, especially if you're trying to cut and paste something. You know, Kamala has had a lot of criticism of her political persona, across the years - not just in the White House. Stories that she's unusually poorly-briefed on matters, and is short-tempered in meetings where this becomes apparent to others. That she tries to 'wing it' too much. And of course, her staff turnover rate is very high, compared to her peers. she is rumored to be hard on, and sharply critical of her staff. She is plagued by speculation that she's often drunk when interacting in her political role.
But... watching her tonight, is the first time I've actually focused on what she's doing, while she's speaking. She got a whole bevy of slow pitches tonight, from Bash. They were easy questions. Sometimes, Bash had to ask them 2 or 3 times, and I saw that this irritated Harris - you could see it in her expressions as the questions were being re-asked.
And these weren't hard-hitting questions, it was clearly a friendly interviewer.
But... seeing the way Harris was answering got me to thinking that something else might be going on here. It's not that she's being evasive. It's not that she's being disingenuous. It's more, that her answers don't actually relate very well to what she's being asked, and remember, these are friendly questions, where there is no need to be defensive.
All of these things taken together, I'm starting to think that Harris might have some kind of learning disability. The behavioral cues fit this, the emotional reactivity, as does the way she answered the interview questions. I wonder - ADHD maybe ? Something that her sense of ambition and drive has successfully masked, well successful to some degree anyway.

Inga, do you think that all politicians have handlers, just because Biden has handlers. Do you really believe that the man who stood up after an assassination attempt and said “Fight! Fight! Fight!” as the secret service agents were trying to get him off stage, would meekly comply with some flunky who told him to stop speaking. It’s not like there was an Easter Bunny on stage to drag him away.
The Simon family of Omaha owned Omaha Steaks. I got into it tonight with a lesser Simon who was pushed out decades ago by his relatives. The Simons are Jewish and ultra rich. He has full TDS. He backs the Dems even in light of how Biden-Harris has treated Israel post-October 7th. I concluded that these Jews are either self-loathing or maybe just exceedingly dumb. Alternatively, maybe they are super devoted to abortion or heavily invested in solar and wind.
Harris did get the trillion dollar number correct about the solar and wind investment. But she left out that it will cost taxpayers about $400b and that will add to the debt and fuel more inflation.
Inga, you couldn't give Donald Trump a fair hearing if your life depended upon it.

Or maybe, just maybe - and work with me here - she's as dumb as a stump and is a perfect walking, talking example of the Peter Principle who only got her start in politics because she was an attractive woman who got to know powerful people the old-fashioned way.
What nonsense!!! Do you understand how STUPID your observation is, that sunflowers no longer follow the sun, while the harvests of the Earth's grains---wheat, barley, oats and rice---are thriving all around the world? Can you explain that?
SNORT! You mean when Bash obliquely asked Harris about changes in her positions (without naming them) , and then offered possible reasons for why she changed them?
Those, of course, have absolutely zip diddly squat to do with sunflowers rotating around during the day to follow the sun. A quick search shows that as they mature they all face east permanently, not random directions as I observed today with a dozen plants. It is getting close to harvest time for them, and as I said- I read about observations from sunflower farmers about this years crop not behaving normally. Elsewise- I'd have never looked.
Collin Rugg @CollinRugg JUST IN: Kamala Harris blames Donald Trump for why she didn't take action on the southern border for over three years.
Lmao.
Question: Why did you wait three years to take any action on the border?
Answer: "A bill was crafted [three years after Kamala got into office] which we supported, which I supported. Donald Trump, got word of this bill that would have contributed to securing our border. and because he believes that it would not have helped him politically he told his folks in Congress, don‘t put it forward."

That is Kamala Harris’s entire campaign blaming Trump for everything plus stealing his policies and claiming that they are her own now
What we’ve learned from Biden’s tenure is that apparently it’s an option to just not have a president. We’d always imagined that the presidency is a rather essential job. I guess not. We can go 4 years without one. Maybe that should be an option on the ballot in future elections. 10:13 AM · Aug 29, 2024
I just don't understand why Democrats BLATANTLY lie to us, when there is video proof right before your eyes. Is this a mostly peaceful home invasion?? This is a mental illness. There is no other way to describe what is happening to them.
"But I broke out of this haze of naivety in 2020, when I became curious about the “good people on both sides” myth that I had heard repeatedly for years — and which remains on life support to this day, perpetuated by President Biden and by Never Trumper Ana Navarro at this year’s Democratic National Convention.
Both of them parroted the media spin that used a truncated clip to claim Trump praised neo-Nazis and white supremacists in his comments about a 2017 protest-turned-riot in Charlottesville, Va.
I still remember my shock the first time I watched the full dialogue in proper context — because in reality, Trump condemned the very white supremacists the media claimed he had praised.
Reporters had completely misrepresented his statement to further the Democratic Party’s agenda.
I felt racially manipulated, pushed to shun Trump as a racist through repetitious, unfounded accusations and hoaxed into believing that he’d said the tiki-torch-carrying white supremacists were good people."
Go read 1984 again. MSNBC “journalists” will sue Republicans for defamation because they never said what they are on video saying. An organized and armed gang of illegal immigrants from Venezuela did not take over a whole apartment building in Aurora, Colorado. In her economic ignorance Kamala Harris did not call for price controls on groceries.
As long as there are folks like Rich and Inga more willing to accept the lies lest they wind up supporting something Republicans, the lies will continue.
Aurora Colorado is just east of Denver. As mentioned above, a video shows a Venezuela gang (Tren de Aragua) strolling down the hall of an apartment building fully armed. The delusional governor, Greg Polis, says it’s imaginary.
Take a peek at Denver Post this morning. Any mention of it? Nope. Heck it’s national news and nothing in the city’s major paper. That’s how Commie-Pinkos cover the news ….With a pillow*. No wonder Polis says it’s imaginary.
Inga, You watched Bill Clinton tie NASA to Russia with the ISS. You watched Hillary Clinton reset relations with Putin after W. supposedly wrecked the good relations we had with Russia. There were books after Trump’s election that explained how Hillary planned to use the Steele Dossier her campaign purchased to delegitimize Trump’s presidency. Yet you still believed the Russian Hoax story. Your observation skills suck.
So I’ve concluded the roller in the Cyma is wrong. Impossible to find a new part but I found an almost same donor on flea bay that needs to come from China. I’m hoping the original roller is there. I’m finishing the IWC today. The movement is gorgeous and the new staff is working though my static poise slowed things down a bit. I can regulate it but the needle isn’t centered. I’m telling myself these things are eighty years old so perfect is the enemy of the great. I have a new roller from cousins for the Buren I might try out today to try and bring that one back from the dead…
Watching Tampon Tim Awalz last night respond to the Stolen Valor question was rather creative. He blamed it on bad grammar. Future prevaricators take note!!!
Instapundit gets one right, the Democrats tell you that this election is about joy for them, but in fact it is all about their hatred for anybody who stands in the way of whatever they want to do, especially if that opposition to their will comes from the people whose interests they are trampling in order to get what they want, maybe it's not just hatred that they feel, but guilt too, and they are being told that what they are feeling is "joy."
Just an airing of peeves... Dollar General is not a dollar store. Any time Dollar General is in the news, someone, who probably was never in either a Dollar General or a dollar store, calls Dollar General a dollar store. Dollar General is not a dollar store.
Harris made a very effective pitch for the center ground. No ban on fracking. Laws on the border will be enforced. Unequivocal support for Israel. And open to a cabinet position for a republican. And no gaffes. There is a lot there for traditional republicans to like. Meanwhile Vance gets booed and Thiel won't return his calls. Trump is now squeezed into the margins. Reduced to giving concessions to Democrat rejects for their support. Harris has solid democrat support, and the republican vote is up for grabs.
"Inga - you lie all the time. Why should any of us take your word for anything?"
Maybe you'll accept my word: The town hall was terrible and a complete misuse of the format and really disrespectful of Tulsi Gabbard. But maybe DJT meant to do that. Why did he keep talking about how he supposedly didn't know it was going to be a town hall and not a speech?
I thought Trump was rambling pretty nonsensically on the Shawn Ryan podcast recently. He couldn't answer a single question without going off on 100 different tangents. Who knows maybe he's tired and talked out. It's definitely not dementia he seems fine. Everything he says he says with great confidence.
"Robert Conquest wisely observed that Marxism captivates not in spite of its mass killings but because of them. That is why it attracted far more enthusiastic American followers during Stalin’s great terror than in the less brutal reigns of Khrushchev and Brezhnev, when admiration shifted to the even more murderous Mao. I wonder whether a similar fascination with brutality explains why, on October 7, 2023, and in the days that followed, some progressives cheered Hamas."
"Americans and Europeans, in short, are converging on a version of the Chinese model, which is why McMeekin refers to “the surprising non-death of Communism,” whose story “is far from over.” It probably never will be. There will always be naive young idealists, “along with ambitious older politicians who may or may not share in the idealism—but are tempted by the promise of an all-encompassing state granting them vast power over their subjects.” Because the commissars of today “often work in the private sector (or for companies aligned with state intelligence),” their forms of control are, though less obvious than those of the nkvd, more “insidious.” "
Yes, that is a common explanation. I'm not a behavioral expert, but I'm not in any hurry to jump on the bus carrying the conventional thinking of the retail political opposition either, because it's often used as a cheap shot. I try to use my perceptions to understand what is happening, so that I can better shape my own thinking.
I don't think she's a huge intellect, but I'm starting to think it's not all about stupidity - I think she's reacting to a lifetime of having to cover a deficiency. I invite you to look closer and tell us what you think upon reflection.
"Hundreds of drivers who depend on their licenses to work were suddenly notified that violations from decades ago disqualify them from holding a CDL in Massachusetts. That number includes school bus drivers and truck drivers.
Walter McCloskey has been driving trucks for 14 years. Last week he said he got a notice from the Registry of Motor Vehicles, telling him that his commercial driver's license was being revoked on August 29th for violations he got nearly 30 years ago, threatening a job he loves.
RMV used lifetime lookback McCloskey says he thought it was a mistake or a computer glitch, but after calling the RMV he was told it was not a mistake and the agency was using what it called a lifetime lookback.
"There's no statute of limitations, there's no due process," McCloskey said. "You know there's no hearing before, you just strip someone of their ability to pay for their mortgage, their kids' tuition, their health insurance. You just take it all away with one week's notice."
McCloskey isn't alone. The WBZ-TV I-Team learned that the same letter went to 482 truck drivers and school bus operators.
School bus drivers impacted Tom Hamilton is Executive Director of the School Transportation Association of Massachusetts. He says the notices came as a surprise to their members too, and the timing couldn't be worse.
"It's the worst possible week of the season of the year to do it, schools are starting this week," Hamilton said. "Not knowing how many were actual bus drivers... we're about 1,200 drivers short as it is. You're just going to devastate kids getting picked up at the bus stop."
Whoever it was at Massachusetts RMV who made this decision should be fired. What utter disrespect for essential workers!
Gospace said… “…A quick search shows that as they mature [sunflowers] all face east permanently, not random directions as I observed today with a dozen plants.”
That made me think of the album cover photos where the band members are all randomly standing around pointed in different directions.
Original Mike said… “I have found the ‘comment box’ to be virtually unusable, especially if you're trying to cut and paste something. The cursor is frequently ‘off screen’ and you can't see what you're entering and you can't scroll it to a position where you can use it.”
On my iPad, I type a character - usually a double quotes, but any should do - so that the box is visible. I paste my quote, then go back and remove my initial character.
If those things were true, then why hasn't the Biden - Harris Administration put changes into effect over the past 4 years to make it happen? Biden banned fracking on government leases on Day 1, with one of his dozens of Executive Orders. The border has been Swiss Cheese since Day 1, similarly - and Harris was in charge, called the 'Border Czar' by every single Legacy Media network, all of whom now deny it in spite of the taped evidence.
Support for Israel has been lukewarm at best, with forked-tongue policy statements being routinely issued by the White House. But: Hooray ! No gaffes. Yeah - that's a real achievement. No ideas, no plans either, but you can't have everything, pilgrim.
While I am sad that their lives are now upended by their old DUI or drug convictions, it seems likely at some point they were asked about priors and kept quiet.
I agree with our hostess. I have come around to voting for DJT, even though I hate DJT. Mickey Kaus in 2024 came up with Kerry Haters for Kerry. I am official member of DJT Haters for DJT. IMO, Ron D as Pres and Kim R as VP would win national popular vote by at least 5 points and the election. DJT could lose, and lose bigly. JD and all of us deserve better.
Scott Patton said… “Just an airing of peeves... Sir, Festivus does not start until Dec 23rd this year.
“Dollar General is not a dollar store. Any time Dollar General is in the news, someone, who probably was never in either a Dollar General or a dollar store, calls Dollar General a dollar store. Dollar General is not a dollar store.”
After the inflation of the last few years, I am amazed that there are any true dollar stores left.
One last reaction to our hostess's comment. If DJT does not prepare properly, he will get his ass chewed in debate/debates. Kamala will prepare. Asians prepare!!!
Arrogant G.I.L.B.A.R. wants to argue without naming his opponent, or pointing the reader to the previous part of the argument, or telling the truth. It is very easy to find out whether "we (the USA) BUILT the planes". We did not, though we did supply the design and some of the parts.
Here's the official Air Force 'fact sheet' on F-16s: link. Since G.I.L.B.A.R. never follows any of my links, I'll quote the pertinent part:
"The F-16 was built under an unusual agreement creating a consortium between the United States and four NATO countries: Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway. These countries jointly produced with the United States an initial 348 F-16s for their air forces. Final airframe assembly lines were located in Belgium and the Netherlands. The consortium's F-16s are assembled from components manufactured in all five countries. Belgium also provides final assembly of the F100 engine used in the European F-16s. Recently, Portugal joined the consortium. The long-term benefits of this program will be technology transfer among the nations producing the F-16, and a common-use aircraft for NATO nations. This program increases the supply and availability of repair parts in Europe and improves the F-16's combat readiness."
As usual when the subject is Ukraine, G.I.L.B.A.R. can't be bothered to spend a minute and a half Googling to see if his statements are correct before posting them.

It’s amazing how you seem to hear what you want and not what was actually said.
All of these things taken together, I'm starting to think that Harris might have some kind of learning disability.
Or maybe, just maybe - and work with me here - she's as dumb as a stump and is a perfect walking, talking example of the Peter Principle who only got her start in politics because she was an attractive woman who got to know powerful people the old-fashioned way.
It's just a theory.
HARD HITTING JOURNALISM!!!
Erm...he was talking about Florida's 6 week election ban.

JUST IN: Kamala Harris blames Donald Trump for why she didn't take action on the southern border for over three years.

What we’ve learned from Biden’s tenure is that apparently it’s an option to just not have a president. We’d always imagined that the presidency is a rather essential job. I guess not. We can go 4 years without one. Maybe that should be an option on the ballot in future elections.

* phrase stolen from Instapundit.
Inga,
You watched Bill Clinton tie NASA to Russia with the ISS.
I learned why original IWC dials are scarce- they lacquered them. The replacements are fine but I had to hunt for one with the original logo…
OMG, that is hilarious. I hope Althouse takes a look at it.
So you will then be voting for DJT, correct Comrade Rich.
It’s just more of their Opposite Land- they are telling you joy because it polls bette than announcing their hatred
The Ugly Truth...

Dollar General should merge with CVS and Walgreen so together they can have a chance against the Amazon behemoth.
Very clever!
Thx

“Killing counter-revolutionaries,” [Mao] explained, “is even more joyful than a good downpour.”
Excellent!
It is no longer a 1.00 thanks kamala
His poor grammar must be why the Chinese hired him to teach English.

She didnt explain why she opposed to fracking maybe that silly gasland film promoted by the uae same with other matters
Another situation where hard cases make bad law, in this case a state regulation:
Hundreds of truck, school bus drivers told their commercial driver's licenses being revoked in Massachusetts
RMV used lifetime lookback
McCloskey says he thought it was a mistake or a computer glitch, but after calling the RMV he was told it was not a mistake and the agency was using what it called a lifetime lookback.
School bus drivers impacted
Tom Hamilton is Executive Director of the School Transportation Association of Massachusetts.

That made me think of the album cover photos where the band members are all randomly standing around pointed in different directions.
Yes, I will take your word Althouse. As for Inga, not hardly. She threw her credibility away long ago.

On my iPad, I type a character - usually a double quotes, but any should do - so that the box is visible. I paste my quote, then go back and remove my initial character.
Trump needs to show some discipline. He's filibustering and pleasuring himself.
Mickey said that in 2004, of course.

After the inflation of the last few years, I am amazed that there are any true dollar stores left.
“Discipline” these days is as uncommon as “common sense”.
One last reaction to our hostess's comment. If DJT does not prepare properly, he will get his ass chewed in debate/debates. Kamala will prepare. Asians prepare!!!
I told you he was a moderate. Why do you have a problem with that? If the government is going to subsidize abortions why can't it subsidize IVF?
And, Jim, I suspect there is some serious alcohol enhancement going on.
Trump already holds the center ground which is why Harris aping Trumps policy points.
The local dollar store is now a $1.25 store.
When the Euro was introduced, all the Pound Shops became Two Euro Shops. It just didn't flow nicely...
In Ireland, I should have specified...

To be honest, I have no interest in looking any closer. Life's too short to observe/examine politicians who exist only to piss me off.
I'm old enough to remember The Five and Dime stores.
