Last June, we learned of a study that found that 25% of Gen Z job applicants brought a parent along with them to a job interview.

See "So what if Gen Z applicants bring their parents to a job interview?" (L.A. Times).

This week, we learn that the Democratic Party nominee for President of the United States is bringing "America's Dad" to her first interview.

I took that screenshot at Axios.

If you're at all skeptical about whether Tim Walz has been presented to us as America's Dad or you just want to experience some good, old fashioned sad laughing watch this:

I don't know why people infantilize Gen Z. They're considerably younger than I am, but there are more than enough who can manage their businesses, join the military, and take back the country. I'm surprised the ones who made it through the pandemic haven't started slitting throats.

Then again, the establishment press loves articles for which the only response is "okay boomer."

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

@doctrev Thanks for inspiring me to boldface the point of this post!

Let's remind ourselves of what we've seen recently on this blog: KH's actual father:

“My dear departed grandmothers...as well as my deceased parents, must be turning in their grave right now to see their family’s name, reputation and proud Jamaican identity being connected, in any way, jokingly or not with the fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker and in the pursuit of identity politics,” he wrote. “Speaking for myself and my immediate Jamaican family, we wish to categorically dissociate ourselves from this travesty,” he added.
Notable word in the professor's essay: joy.

I wanted to watch video, but Facebook demands the ability to track everything else I do in order to watch it.
Why does the potential first female President need a bicycle, err man, to attend her first interview as a candidate for President in the general election? And yeah, Walz is portrayed as the patriarchal leader we all need. I thought these people destroyed classical liberalism, but now they mock feminism and progressivism.

tim maguire বলেছেন...

The 25% figure is hard to believe. I've also never met a Gen Z person who is afraid to order food in a restaurant. I'm sure these things happen sometimes and that they happen at all is astonishing, but still, 25%?

Gusty Winds বলেছেন...

Do you think Daddy "Stolen Valor" Walz will yank Kamala's hand real hard to make sure she sits in the correct chair?

Gusty Winds বলেছেন...

I get a real creepy vibe from Tim Walz. He's so fake over the top. Just like Kamala's cackle.

doctrev বলেছেন...

The normal way to respect the writer is to put their direct words in quotes, Professor. Is that a quote? But if a 59-year old woman needs a minder to keep her from humiliating herself on friendly TV, she has zero business in public office, and that has zero to do with much younger people.

BUMBLE BEE বলেছেন...

As seen in almost all commercials today, a woman of color needs a white man.

mccullough বলেছেন...

My interactions with younger people have been pleasant. I’m not seeing this snowflake stuff first hand. Sounds like it’s a small percentage of 16-29 year olds (or whatever the Gen Z age range is). I will say I know too many parents who hover and try to control outcomes for their kids, mostly moms.. But their kids are alright

mccullough বলেছেন...

This interview is going to be Jeeves & Wooster. Maybe Lewis & Martin. George & Gracie.

CNN should have a hotline call in during the interview so you can call in and tell Tampon Tim you saw your neighbor not wearing a mask.

Aggie বলেছেন...

I'm at a loss to even guess how this is going to come across, even given CNN's willingness to prostrate themselves and be completely humiliated on their own network. My guess is that anybody watching that's a diabetic, should probably have an insulin shot ready.

Not to mention, a bucket.

America's dads are universally depicted in pop culture as idiots.
I still can't quite believe this hasn't been pointed out in regards to the Walz PR.
Of course, the same people demeaning dads are supporting the Dem ticket.

doctrev বলেছেন...

A lot of Democrats are seriously pissed with CNN for driving Biden out of the race. A real tongue bath interview might salvage their reputation, but at the cost of real mockery.

We all knowed Kamala Harris has Daddy issues. Coach Walz is acting as her doula helping birth her presidency

Big Mike বলেছেন...

She could be the first female President of the United States, and she can’t even do a friendly interview without having a man around to support her. Is that what America’s feminists want for the first female President?

I see that Harris now supports building the rest of the border wall, after 3 1/2 years ignoring the border despite being the administration’s “point person’ for border issues. In 2019 she cosponsored the Zero-Emission Vehicles Act, mandating zero emission (meaning “electric”) vehicles. Today she s trying to claim that it’s a lie that she ever supported an EV mandate. She was opposed to fracking but now she’s for it. She now opposes taxing tips. Really, anymore plagiarizing Trump’s policy positions and his campaign will have to send her a MAGA hat

She’s dumb enough to wear it.

Walz and Harris were both born in 1964 (this is the first election I'm aware of where the majority of major party candidates are younger than I am)

By Strauss-Howe reckoning they are Gen X (as am I, born 1962), not Boomer and even by other standards they are the very last Boomer year.

Keep in mind that very little of Gen Z is actually near adulthood.

Gen X born 1960-1980
Gen Y aka Millennials born 1980-200
Gen Z born 2000-2020

I think father/daughter is the wrong paradigm. I'm thinking something more like Burns & Allen or Mary & Mr. Grant. Well, the latter might be tough to pull off. I don't think Kamala has Mary Tyler Moore's likability. Maybe a variant on the Lucy/Desi dynamic. Walz shouldn't affect a Cuban accent. That would be racist, but maybe he could use a kind of Fargo accent. Then when Kamala does something really daffy he could threaten to put her over his knee and spank her. He shouldn't actually do it though. That might cause some loss among the female voters, but just the threat would show that this is an adult, no nonsense administration.

Brian Keith - Family Affair
Michael Landon - Little House On The Prairie
Chuck Conner - The Rifleman
Just to name a few.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

If you're talking about putting "America's Dad" in quotes. Those are scare quotes. He's not literally our dad. It's an epithet that was bandied about for the last few weeks. Is epithet denialism extending to "America's Dad" now (as it did for "Border Czar")?

Breezy বলেছেন...

The plus is she’s starting the interview circuit. The minus is, given this particular scenario, we won’t really know if she can handle the job. As Van Jones said, “the Presidency is a speaking role.” She’s gotta be able to do it well, at a minimum. The crazy thing is we already know she can’t speak well, so what are we really watching for? See if she’s improved enough after all this time?

Her basic problem is a lack of understanding of how things in general actually work. She thinks she can just make up a policy position and it makes total sense. So without coherent policies, she’s really got nothing of value to say.

Kate বলেছেন...

People born in the early 1960s are Generation Jones. Our resentments are our strength. Not seeing much of that in Harris and Walz, though. The Boomers can have those two.

She goes into word salad, starts cackling, and/or proves to be mostly, if not completely, ignorant of the topic. Her zinger against Biden in the debates just tells you how predictable Biden is such that they could prepare her for that moment.

Walz is actually competent speaking to the public. He lies constantly, especially about his bio, but he understands how to answer questions like a politician. Occasionally his mean side slips though. He's not a nice person.

Kamala is the understudy who has been called up to play the President on TV, due to the previous actor's indisposition. I expect the interview will be some version of the skit they did already where Walz pretended he doesn't eat anything spicy because he's white. They'll sit around a table and just tease each other good naturedly and laugh and laugh. It'll have the vibe of an old married couple. I wouldn't be surprised if they were on a set designed to look like America's kitchen table.
Then Dana will ask a scary question about Trump and Walz will scowl and furrow his brow and warn her darkly about the danger we're all in and tell us what he learned about dictators during his time in the military. Dana will nod soberly all the while. Then Kamala will come out with a laugh line insult belittling Trump and they'll all laugh and laugh some more.

gilbar বলেছেন...

okay, i dug through the archives, and read the survey.
It's NOT %25 bring parents with to interviews..
It's %25 said they'd brought their parents to AN interview (in the last year)

I wonder how many meant: "my mom DROVE ME to an interview (because i don't drive).
No data (that i saw) on parent being AT the interview.. Just TO the interview..

On The Other Hand.. Back 18 years ago, when i was dating a professor (adjunct at that time, then asst, then asoc), she called me from San Marcos Texas (go Bobcats!) to tell me in STUNNED DISBELIEF; that one of her student's PARENT had called her to complain about the grade her daughter had received (on an assignment! not even a final grade).
