"Biles wore her goat necklace as another GOAT, Tom Brady, was in attendance to support her."

From "Simone Biles falls off balance beam to cost herself Olympics medal" (NY Post).

Maybe humility will make a comeback.

I've been observing the Olympics from afar. I don't even know where to find them on the mishmash of TV services I'm subscribed to, but I see the headlines. From the headlines, it seems that there are several American women who keep winning the medals, and as for the men, there's one very handsome swimmer, a gymnast whose glasses make him interesting, and a pole vaulter whose penis hit the pole crossbar.

It is not as if Simone Biles hasn't won a few medals at this Olympic meet including gold ones, but she's not from New York, so New York sports media does what it does and shits on everyone not from New York.

jaydub বলেছেন...

...a pole vaulter whose penis hit the pole." I think he was either confused about which pole to vault with or was just showing off. Since even our hostess noticed I'm inclined to believe the later.

Noticed?!

It's everywhere.

I saw a funny TikTok where a young man was confessing to have watched it hundreds of times.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Other than the name Simone Biles, that penis is the most visible thing in the whole Olympics, including the triathletes swimming in shit.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

I remember when the most visible thing about the Olympics was the medal totals — the U.S. against every other country.

Political Junkie বলেছেন...

The penis story is funny.
Jeff Greenfield said on Twitter that the athlete was too excited.
I referenced the Pointer Sisters (!!) song Excited from 1983. One line from memory was "I am so excited, and I just can't hide it".

Sally327 বলেছেন...

At these Olympics, Simone Biles won a gold medal for the team all around and then a gold medal for individaul all around and a gold medal on the vault as well so seems churlish to focus on the one individual event where she isn't going to medal.

Altogether she has 10 Olympic medals (7 gold) across all the Olympics where she's competed. (Note she is 27 years old and it's incredible that she is still able to compete at this high level in this particular sport. GOAT indeed!).

Katie Ledecky is another female superstar. Her swimming is so dominant they
can't keep the runners up in the camera frame with her.

An unheralded U.S. woman surprised and won the bicycle road race. She took control with 10 miles to go and blew everyone away.

American Scottie Scheffler won gold in golf.

Lots of U.S.A. gold in track and field already. Noah Lyles won 100m. A gigantic American shot putter won gold for the third time. Much more gold will be won.

U.S.A men and women basketball are in a separate class than the other countries.

Only disappointment appears to be U.S. men swimmers. I think they have only 1 gold?

I only watch a few of the obscure sports, like archery or pingpong. The competitors are generally true amateurs. I did happen to tune in as the American woman emerged victorious in the road cycling event. Good for her!

"seems churlish to focus on the one individual event"

My focus is on the excessive focus on one person, when many are competing and on overdone GOATism.

jaydub বলেছেন...

"Noticed? It's everywhere." I think it's more accurate to say "it's everywhere that particular athlete goes."

BTW, I for one did not notice the faux pas. So, I've got that going for me. Which is nice.

She's photogenic, personable, been around for a long time, relatively speaking, so familiar to a lot of people who only follow sports casually. And Senator Vance said some not so kind things about her in re the Tokyo Olympics and her competing (or not) there. Plus I think Simone has made some politically connected comments of her own, maybe took a shot at Trump? I haven't really followed that part of it but anytime a well known celebrity can provide favorable media for the Democrats that person will get a lot of media lovin'. But she is still an incredible and accomplished athlete.

It has been fun watching Simone Biles achieve here redemption after her much criticized breakdown in Tokyo. She's human.

But...of course after her all-around gold, she had to go political on X and post "I love by black job."

OK. Take it easy sweetheart. The migrants flooding in to vote for Democrats aren't taking your gymnastics job. But they are taking up space in inner city community centers affecting the black community. But you haven't been there is years. Maybe never.

I remember when the most visible thing about the Olympics was the medal totals

Microsoft put it on the lockscreen for Windows. I also see it at Outkick.com, but then Outkick primarily covers sports. The US has the most medals, but not necessarily the most golds (it tied for first during the day yesterday).

I only know the Biles won gold, because I saw a headline that US Woman's Gymnastics won and that she won on vault. I don't know the third but found it verifying that she did win a gold this Olympics. I still feel as I do about New York sports media, and I don't think Biles feels the least bit of humility for stumbling in one event.

As for focusing on Biles, she's a spokesperson for McDonalds and they are a major sponsor of the Olympics. I'm not a fan of any of the sponsors, but I get why she's getting a great deal of focus. On the other hand, much of what I've seen of the Olympics this year is because what is shown in prime time at the local bar. It seems the biggest prime time event is Women's beach volleyball, and it doesn't really matter what country the teams are representing, because it is being shown. It also has a great venue location within Paris. They are sure to spread attention across many nations and athletes, but there seems a bit of focus on that particular sport. I saw a good deal of focus when one of the athletes would lean forward at the net while their partner served behind them. That view seemed to be provided often.

The rule of Lemnity বলেছেন...

Was it the women's or men's division?

No word yet on the pole's pronouns. Unofficially, the penis is a he/him.

Now, from the comments here, I the pole transitioned to a crossbar?!

I don't know. Don't quote me. I don't want to be accused of spreading misinformation.

Jersey Fled বলেছেন...

I don’t think i could.

Aggie বলেছেন...

Somebody once said, 'It ain't braggin' if you've done it'. Is she bragging, or has she done it? As for humility, I think bowing out of competition for mental health reasons is a demonstration of humility, in the face of pride - isn't it? I recall there was no fanfare involved, and I interpreted it as a message that society shouldn't shame people for the choice - although some did. I didn't agree with it at the time, but I didn't mentally shame her, either.

As for the self-promotion, this goes with the territory in modern professional sports, which is what the Olympics is, now. Can't call someone out for these imperfections when the industry is the kind of cesspit that it is. See: Women's boxing.

Sally327 বলেছেন...

Aggie বলেছেন...

By the way, I'm waiting for the arrival of the next phase of the gender wars, where body parts can declare their sexuality. The avant-garde will be having their penis declare its pronouns, and they'll be She/Her

Sebastian বলেছেন...

Pedantic, I know, but his penis did not hit the pole.

Other than that, lots of good stuff at Olympics, if you like sports. Scheffler, Faulkner, Crouser (of course), Fisher 10K, gymnastics teams, rowing, shooting/archery. Some of us enjoy seeing athletes from other countries do amazing things--Novak, Marchand, Bol comeback, guys on rings, who knew rugby 7s is a fun game.

If you have Peacock, the NBC streaming service, they have a lot of coverage. I watched women's beach and normal volleyball last night.

Kate বলেছেন...

We subscribe to Peacock, and the coverage has been amazing. The sailing in Marseilles has been on in the mornings; it's a peaceful screensaver. And if I want to watch a country besides USA, I can.

Gymnastics has had the most traditional, old school coverage. It feels rusty compared to the other events.

The rule of Lemnity বলেছেন...

When historians look back, that penis hitting the crossbar will be remembered as the beginning of what can be, unburdened by what has been, the first crossing of a rubik's cube, a true moment in the passage of time.

The mixed 4x400 was fantastic. The anchor woman for the Dutch runs the fastest 400 in world history (fastest in 39 years), almost as though she was able to dig deeper in order to win it for her team than she had ever been able to do before in an individual competittion. One of the great olympic moments.

So the world’s elite athletes should not sacrifice as much, nor train so hard, lest they win a medal and seem insufficiently humble in the eyes of some blogger in the lefty la-la land of Madison, Wisconsin.

What a fuss over nothing. You can barely notice it in the ticktok video. I cant get excited over the Olympics anymore given the endless barrage of female dominated sports or sports which I have no interest in watching like:

Sailing
table tennis
Female Boxing and wrestling
Women's basketball
Male Gymnastics
Horse back riding
Shooting
Tennis/Golf
Field Hockey

As for the track events after a while the sameness of the athletes gets dull. I assume another East African will win the Marathon. And a North African will win the 1500 meters. And a German lady will win the shot put.

Finally, who cares about medal totals anymore? It was fun during the cold war when we were fighting the evil empire, but now its just meh.

Quayle বলেছেন...

Not a trustworthy source - mostly muckraking - but the Daily Telegraph reporting about Biles claims she was "...criticizing the gymnastics fans in Paris." I would counsel more grace and graciousness, both in victory and in setback, if it were my lot to advise (which it isn't.) But these are not cut-n-dry things. Arsène Wenger once said of Christiano Ronaldo, something like (as I understood it): 'It is difficult to separate the ego from the greatness. The ego may be the source of the greatness.'

As I said, not easy things to comment on.

Anthony Ammirati may become as famous, in his own way, as Vinko Bogataj, the Slovenian ski jumper whose fall from the ramp was featured for many years representing the “agony of defeat” in ABC’s “Wide World of Sports.”

OTOH, I understand he has received tens of thousands of offers of marriage from Frenchwomen.

(Yeah, I made that up.)

Here’s what googles AI said about male versus female bone structure.

In summary, women’s bone structure is not as robust as men’s, with differences in peak bone mass, fracture risk, and disease susceptibility. While both sexes have unique adaptations to their respective biological roles, men generally have larger bones and higher peak bone mass, whereas women have stronger pelvises and are more vulnerable to certain bone diseases.

In other words, the IOC is putting women at higher risk of injury by putting them in the ring with biological men. Particularly for head injuries.

Biles is surely the greatest female gymnast (weird that it isn't "gymnist"- is there a rule?) based on overall performance results compiled during a long career in her sport- her longevity in it is almost unique now. However, it does diminish her a bit by wearing such jewelry. Even if one has "done it" braggarts leave a bad taste in the mouth.

I've been watching the cycling and the sailing since those are two sports I have participated in. The sailing could use more wind to make it more exciting, but maybe I'm biased since my sailing has mostly been on the SF Bay where it usually blows pretty hard.
