AND: After the debate, the commentators on CNN seem to all be on the same page proclaiming that Biden was dismal and that Democrats are panicking and planning to figure out how to replace Biden. I didn’t think Biden was that bad. I thought it was bad, but not that bad. So it seems to me that the commentators and the Democrats — these panicking Democrats — were ready to go with this attack. This seems completely phony and planned to me.

The pressure on Biden to withdraw will be enormous after tonight. I can imagine Shelob and Hair Gel Gruesome are starting to initiate their plans. Newsom should have run in the primaries- he would have defeated Biden easily- now it is going to be a mess getting Biden to step aside.
I don't disagree that this was a planned "hit job" but they're also bringing up how the Biden campaign's focus groups had Trump's numbers going down because of his tone, attitude, lies, etc. That was the most in control and having the least negative tone I think I've ever seen from Trump, especially in a debate context.

I decided to check out CNN as well - they admit Biden is a disaster but cannot bring themselves to say anything positive about Trump (except the Kentucky guy [Reynolds?} and some bald guy). Biden lied about Charlottesville (so much for Snopes giving him an in-kind contribution before the debate) but most of the panel talked non-stop about Trump's "lies" and now they are in super panic mode - convinced that swapping in a new candidate will solve the "Trump" problem. As in, Trump, currently at 47% approval rating.

Trump was not his worst, but a good, sharp debater could have come away with a clear win.
Biden refusal to step down will place him with Nader in the history books as people who handed Republicans the Presidency. Every candidate deserves to be seriously primaried not matter their age or party. Rule by the incumbent has benefits (can achieve something now they know how it works) but must be balanced.
If a major 2024 D candidate ran this spring and debated, we would be counting the days until the Trump loss instead of the (now) win. Biden cannot debate again, but almost has to after that confused turd he took.

It started off pretty good, had the usual out-of-context quote gags, pretty even handed with the remarks...then he just seems to check out and bring out the usual lefty canard that is taken as an article of faith by that side at the beginning of the Trump segment. Stating, without evidence, that everything out of Trump's mouth is a lie. *yawn*. He made a good point about the debate format sucking when the moderators changed the topic in the middle of the veterans discussions, and then missed the closure (IMHO) with a lame discussion on debate drugs (and a gratuitous dig on Ben Carson...at least bring up 5-5-5!).
If only he had had one of those Maher moments of sanity and chosen funny things to rag on Trump the way he did Biden (and he had plenty of material to choose from) it could have been a great 15 minutes. I rate it higher than Biden's performance but worse than Trump's tonight.

Denial is truly an astounding, psychic force. How Democrats of every stripe coerced themselves to not see what was obvious to everyone else is unbelievable. Therefore, I don’t believe it. This was a set up intended to take Biden down. My guess is that Obama’s minions, such as David Axelrod will lead the way in knocking down Biden.
Biden offered to debate Trump with onerous rules the Biden team thought he wouldn't accept. Trump called their bluff.
Now Trump should ask when the second debate will be held.
The next question the world should be asking is how can Biden continue as Commander-in-Chief?

I'll freely admit I may be wrong in thinking this but I suspect the panic is genuine. While I'm sure the Jurn-o-list still exists, the folks paid to spew DNC propaganda on CNN et al aren't the party movers and shakers and aren't involved in the deepest private conversations among the leading pols and donors. If this was a planned move to defenestrate Biden, they ain't privy to that fact. I think there was some genuine reasoning based on the SOTU and other appearances that Biden could fake it till the election. The Biden camp was banking on Trump turning in a performance akin to his first 2020 debate without realizing that the side-by-side press conference format they insisted on was going to help focus Trump and sharpen the distinction between the two men.
Narayanan brings up the elephant in the room. Biden could have bowed out anytime before last night and stayed in the White House til January 2025. At this point there's no credible way to say he must be replaced as the nominee without simultaneously admitting he should be 25th'ed or resign. I'm also applying a corollary to the famous Ben Stein quip (if something can not go on forever it will stop.) A thing that could happen but hasn't must have been stayed for a reason. The most obvious reason for Biden not being replaced earlier is not some conspiracy to do it now but there was and is no consensus on which potential replacement is both acceptable and capable of running better than Biden against Trump. As far as I can tell the Biden camp issued this challenge and picked the unusual dates themselves. This wasn't forced on them by anybody in or out of the Democrat Party.
Certainly the Dems may now decide that they have to try to get Biden off the ticket but the question is going to be how much it helps them. The optics of bypassing Harris, who would be the obvious choice if she was elevated by a resignation, and leaving the doddering husk in office are going to be ugly. A floor fight at the convention in mid-September is going to be similarly ugly, involve legal challenges to getting the nominee on ballots in unfriendly states, and leave the nominee with only about eight weeks to mount a campaign against a Republican party that is probably as solidly united behind a candidate as it has been since 1984.
They might be able to do it but I think it's a stretch to assume this was part of some grand plan.

It took the entirety of the automaton democraticals a mere 10 seconds to receive their talking points from The Central Committee and go from years of proclaiming Biden the most fit and on the ball he has ever been and "Democracy is on the line!" to calling for the immediate removal of Biden and discarding the dem primary results and tossing those millions of votes in the trash!
We are watching in real time as the democratical party Supreme Soviet and deep state henchmen preparing to "disappear" comrade biden.
It started off pretty good, had the usual out-of-context quote gags, pretty even handed with the remarks...then he just seems to check out and bring out the usual lefty canard that is taken as an article of faith by that side at the beginning of the Trump segment.
I can't tell you how many times I've started to watch a clip, fallen in love with it, gotten excited, posted a link on the Althouse board, and finished watching the video, only to see it turn to shit from the moment I left.
At least 20 times that's happened to me.
What made Jon Stewart's bit so funny was how he would set up the joke, and let Joe Biden tell the punchline. And not just Biden, his CNN mockery was too funny.
The Trump hostility was predictable and boring. But all the Biden stuff? Stewart wanted Biden to succeed so bad. And he would just sit there and say nothing after a Biden clip ran. And the libs in his audience were laughing so hard.
I treasure Stewart because he has comedian instincts and almost always goes for the laugh. He's at his funniest when he's ragging on his own side. I agree with you, though, the second half of that clip sucks beans.

I missed the first 15 to 20 minutes of the debate. So I missed the real horror show, apparently.
I think the drugs kicked in, because Biden didn't freeze up much in the bit I saw. He was incoherent and jumping around. Anyway, I thought his debate was bad, but I thought the moderators would spin it and say they were both bad.
I was surprised by the CNN panel. And really they were just reporting on their phones blowing up and how the Democrats were in a panic. I didn't expect them to be honest.

I had the opposite reaction. To me, the Democrats have been phony for months and months, pretending that nothing was wrong. I felt like I was finally getting some honest commentary on Biden's unfitness for the White House.
