I doubt they have tokens or passes.

Probably going to just wing it...

They’re waiting, but they’re not happy. They know the driver will order them to the rear, with a peremptory Birds in the back! Sadly, we have yet to build a species-blind society. (A public service message on behalf of the Avian Liberation Council)

Here in Florida the sandhill cranes take a uber. Only lesser egrets would submit to riding a bus.

But a nice day so no need to share an umbrella.

No Response to meade's friendly banter.

Sandhill's have always been a little stuckup.

Cranes in my neighborhood have lately taken to hanging out under a shady oak tree near one of our nearly-depleted retention ponds. It's been so unrelentingly hot and dry here over the last couple of weeks, even the cranes are ducking out of the sun. Mercifully, we had a good dose of rain today. And it looks like this week will begin our regular (and much needed) summer rains. So, very soon the cranes will be out and about again- pecking at some of the cars left out on the driveways. (for some reason, one of them likes to go after pick-up trucks). Florida Crane is sometimes similar to Florida Man.

They're like Norman, waiting for the bus in Ghost World

How do you know they're not hookers?

In case Meade and the Mrs. are wondering what to have for dinner...

Might I suggest a nice Rhone varietal? Syrah would pair nicely, I think.

Guten Appetit!

Here in North Central Florida along the St Johns River the cranes, egrets, seagulls, eagles, osprey, geese, all shit everywhere possible every time they can. The geese are the worst. Mouse sized poops all over.

Hey Derve, lighten the eff up.

Awful quiet. Those things make a racket when transiting my area in SE TN. There's a refuge a few miles away. They can be heard inside with doors and windows closed. Replaced this year by Cicadas. They don't really land on my property. I suppose since the Sandhill rave is just down the road

In my neighborhood in West Central Florida we have a resident population on our cul-de-sac. They are very accustomed to people and will walk right up to you and stare you in the face. Some of the neighbors leave out cracked corn for them to eat. They are most entertaining during mating season when they dance for each other and will pick up a piece of Spanish Moss and toss it in the air as an offering to their partner.

"Just leave them alone if you want them to stay alive and not get used to humans affecting their lives."

Nonsense. It's better that they become further acclimated to human interaction when in a human-centered environment. That will make them more fit for survival than would not being adapted to human interaction.

"You're on their land." That's just nonsense. Birds don't own land, and they are most likely transiting the space where humans frequent. The cranes may have a territory that they perceive, but they don't have land in any way that reflects that it's "their land". It's unlikely they are currently even in their territory considering they're next to a bus stop.

RCOCEAN II म्हणाले...

The Sandhill cranes are not on "their land". They are near a bus stop. Must have missed the Sandhill crane contruction crew that built it. LOL. Nor do i think saying
"hey, hows it going Mr. Bird" - bothering them.

Seriously, is this satire?

BTW, if Canadian geese decide to drop in our local park or golf courses, they are strangers and guests. They are not on "their land".

And Althouse goes through absurd lengths to be nice to Turkeys. Even when these Tom turkeys are strutting around like they own the path. They should be happy they're not in a stew pot.

Rusty म्हणाले...

They are elegant looking aren't they. One day they're in the middle of a field clacking up a storm and the next they're under the locust tree in your front yard. So quiet if they didn't move you wouldn't know they were there.

Canada Goose is the proper name.
