"Any pretense of seriousness evaporated last week with the New York Times's expose of the Alitos' breach of flag etiquette...."

"While Justice Alito has stated that he had nothing to do with this flag hoisting, the incident, we are told, somehow amounts to evidence that the Alitos supported Donald Trump's 'stop the steal' campaign. Where does that connection come from? A search of the Factiva news database turns up no articles containing the phrases 'stop the steal' and 'upside down flag' before the Times report on May 16. Rather than retreat in humiliation, the Times doubled down this week with a follow-up report of yet another flag... spotted at the Alitos' vacation home in New Jersey. The left tells us that the 1775 Pine Tree flag was spotted among Jan. 6 protesters! And moreover, that its catch phrase, 'an appeal to heaven,' derives from a radical character —John Locke. The Times somehow fails to let readers know that the flag is a longtime symbol of independence; that it was designed by George Washington's secretary; was flown on ships commissioned by Washington; has been honored, commemorated and flown over state capitols; and is the official maritime flag of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts...."

Writes Kimberley A. Strassel, in "A Flagging Campaign Against Justice Alito/The ‘ethics’ attack having failed, the left turns to flag etiquette" (Wall Street Journal).

Amazing. I followed the upside-down flag non-story, and I had seen the appeal to heaven story, but I had no idea the broad use and background of the appeal to heaven flag.

This truly makes clear that the Times has become an alternating case of decent journalism and absolute trash, both published in the same place under the same leadership, and therefore unreliable at best.

It might be a crazy pointless story, but it got His Holiness Alito to blame his wife for the desecration of Old Glory. So it's pretty cool we now have direct evidence he is willing to throw anybody under the bus to cover his ass. This is the typical response we expect from a low T soy boy.

you Probably don't think i'm being serious.. BUT, IT IS TRUE!

They didn't Just evade taxes.. they ATTACKED and TORTURED innocent tax collectors; with Tar (and Feathers!)
AND they didn't stop THERE. They STOLE GOVERNMENT WEAPONS of MASS DESTRUCTION from Ft Ticonderoga,
and used "cannons" to force THE GOVERNMENT to remove its forces from Boston MA.
AND they didn't stop THERE. They continued their insurrection against The Government for MANY years!
AND, THEY DID IT UNDER THAT "FLAG" THAT "JUSTICE" ALITO FLEW AT HIS HOUSE!!!

Unless YOU are the sort of person that would Approve of THAT.. YOU had BETTER vote BIDEN!!

Kim Strassel used to be a good columnist for the Journal. This is TrumpWing garbage.

"While Justice Alito has stated that he had nothing to do with this flag hoisting, the incident, we are told, somehow amounts to evidence that the Alitos supported Donald Trump’s “stop the steal” campaign. Where does that connection come from? A search of the Factiva news database turns up no articles containing the phrases “stop the steal” and “upside down flag” before the Times report on May 16."

What a stupid paragraph. Alito's blaming his wife has been a laughable excuse from the start. If there was nothing wrong with the flag gesture, Ms. Strassel, why was any excuse-making necessary? Why blame the wife? Why not aggressively and assertively defend Ms. Alito's speechifying? Do it on the merits? Say exactly why you did it and what it meant, and what your inspiration was?

And then what about the Pine Tree flag at the Alitos' Jersey shore vacation home? Was that Mrs. Alito too? Did the Alitos run into problems with libtard neighbors there too? (And when the hell did flying Tea Party/StopTheSteal flags become a really clever answer to a verbal dustup with neighbors?) Again, if it was a patriotic gesture, then just explain it. Forcefully. Clearly. Convincingly. But nobody is doing that. The Alitos weren't flying an upside down flag because their house was in distress. They weren't flying the Pine Tree flag as part of an Eighteenth Century nautical history display.

The bit about the Factiva word-search is equally laughable, if indeed it is even true. Memo to Ms. Strassel; a Google search of January 6 Capitol images shows a number of Pine Tree flags and upside down flags being brandished by the insurrectionists. We in the real world of information have been looking at those images for days now. You should too.

There is more:
"The left tells us that the 1775 Pine Tree flag was spotted among Jan. 6 protesters! And moreover, that its catch phrase, 'an appeal to heaven,' derives from a radical character—John Locke.
"The Times somehow fails to let readers know that the flag is a longtime symbol of independence; that it was designed by George Washington’s secretary; was flown on ships commissioned by Washington; has been honored, commemorated and flown over state capitols; and is the official maritime flag of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is currently displayed outside the office of the speaker of the House. Dozens of historic flags were toted to the Capitol on Jan. 6, as were copies of the Constitution and pictures of the American eagle. Are they all now symbols of 'insurrection'?"

That's not telling any of us anything new. Basically everybody was aware of those historical connections. I certainly knew of them. Just like I knew that the Gadsden flag (coiled snake on a background of yellow with the words, "Don't Tread On Me") has an acknowledged historical reference, but most importantly now, a new connection as a spiritual flag of the Tea Party movement. There were Gadsden flags at the January 6 insurrection riot as well, of course.

Look, Kimberley; it isn't helping your argument that the Speaker of the House also has his own Pine Tree flag. Speaker Johnson is going along with the insurrectionist Presidential candidate who proposes to pardon all of the January 6 rioters even as he is being sued by Capitol Police Officers who where injured that day.

These are all flags and symbols that have historical meanings. Meanings which, it is obvious to everyone but you, are being systematically converted by the TrumpWing to support insurrection and authoritarianism. It takes a lot of fucking nerve to wave around the Constitution while at the same time talking about oh just maybe suspending the parts that Trump doesn't find so useful.

Yancey Ward বলেছেন...

I think this is all battle-space prep- the Democrats are, of course, planning to go to court themselves if, by some miracle, Trump wins in November despite the avalanche of mail-in-"votes". If Trump wins, the Democrats will do all the exact same things Trump did November-January 2020-21, and probably at double or triple the intensity. The difference will be that the Democrats will get a far more favorable audience in the court system everywhere but for SCOTUS, so they are already attacking SCOTUS in preparation for that eventuality.

Wrong, Chuck. They've ALWAYS stood for insurrection, if that is the only way to preserve our liberty. "Defiance to tyranny is obedience to God". Our forefathers very much intended that their descendants should always be prepared and willing to engage in violent armed insurrection, mercilessly slaughtering any who dared oppress us, if there were no alternative to enslavement. This is an admirable and noble sentiment that should be cultivated widely among the people. That's the explicit purpose of the Second Amendment, and the Federalist Papers and other writings of the Founding Fathers make it crystal-clear to everyone except bootlicking Democrats who crave the lash of Big Nanny Government on their backs.

And they've never stood for authoritarianism, now or formerly. Again, that's the province of the Deep State Democrats. "Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen."

But I was deeply distuirbed by an active Supreme Court justice hanging the American flag upsidedown. 4 USC § 8 "The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property." His action was far too policitical for someone who is supposed to be a neutral purveyor of justice, and was disrespectful to the flag.

Alito's excuse – blaming his wife – was also pathetic. I judge you, sir, by who you chose to marry, and then throw under the bus!

Indeed. I and several others wanted Vivek or someone else, but Democrats cronies made sure Trump trials took up all the oxygen in the room, because “Trump” in a headline gets clicks. I think it was the left interfering with the GOP primary that made sure Trump would win it, because they thought there disqualification nonsense would work. It's amazing how upset the left is by patriots flying various historical US flags, whether it be the Gadsden or otherwise.

These are the same people who scream that it is ok to tear down the US Flag and fly a Palestinian flag in its place... the same people who demand that we accept a judge who donates to Biden be handpicked to be the judge for Biden's political opponent... and yet they have their panties in a wad over Alito flying the US Flag upside down as a sign of distress.

The Godfather বলেছেন...

Flying the American Flag upside down is a well-known signal of distress. On January 6 didn't both pro-Trumpists and pro-Bidenists regard the US as being in distress? The pro-Bidenists even called it an "Insurrection." The only reason I can see that this symbol would be more likely to be interpreted as Pro-Trump than Pro-Biden is if you think that the pro-Trump folks are more likely to honor the flag than the pro-Biden folks.

One of the things I observe and pay attention to while driving around is flags.

In Texas, if there are two or more flagpoles at a residence, one of them has a Texas flag on it.

In NY, where I live, only commercial establishments and government buildings display the state flag. I haven't really noticed the presence or lack thereof of state flags in other states. But since Texans view themselves as Texans first, Americans second, there's no surprise.

Around here in CNY if there's one or more flags displayed, and none of them are US flags it's almost 100% certain the occupants of that dwelling are liberals. And the flag(s) flying is a rainbow or BLM or Palestinian or other virtue signaling flag.

If one flagpole with one flag and it's a standard 50 star US flag, there's a possibility the occupants are Democrat, but I wouldn't bet on it one way or another. If there's one American flag and it's a historical US flag such as The Betsy Ross or Bennington 76 flag- it's a Republican house.

If there's a Gadsden flag on display with a US flag- a conservative Republican house. If there's a military branch flag flying with the US flag it tells you someone in the house served in that branch. With a 50 star flag tells you nothing about the politics in the residence. With a Bennington 76 flag...

I have 3 flagpoles, 6 flags. Replaced on a regular basis. It's windy on top of the hill we live on. The top 3 are always- Bennington 76, US Navy, and the generic Christian flag. Under the Navy flag it's either the Gadsden flag or the historic Navy Jack. Both display the same message. Currently under the Bennington 76 flag is the Gonzalez flag, under the Christian flag is the Bedford flag. Those two get changed up randomly with other historic flags. The Bunker Hill, Fort Moultrie, and Templar Knights flag have all had a turn.

Care to guess my political leanings?

While I likely have views in common with those who display the Thin Blue Line flag, that one will never be on display on my flagpoles. I'm not fond of any flag that's superimposed on an American flag. Want to send a message? Design your own flag from scratch,

So now we discover that the WAPO has been sitting on the Alito upside-down flag story for over three years after interviewing the Alitos in their yard. Kirk Parker বলেছেন...

Gospace,

Definitely do not fly the Thin Blue Line flag -- it's a great insult to the Anglo-American tradition of what the police should be.

Peel's seventh point illustrates the problem:

"To maintain at all times a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and that the public are the police, the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence."

The implication that the police are the only thing standing between us and chaos is much more appropriate for polities that have a gendarmerie, and we all know what that kind of a police force is descended from.
