What a dress! Worn by Emma Brooks McAllister at the Emmys.

I don't know why this isn't done more often — this "drawing" of the underlying anatomy on the surface of a dress. I guess it's a lot like some horrible T-shirts....

For women:

Is the idea too inherently trashy? But I think there's something good about taking a very trashy idea and elevating it. So, I still like the Emmys dress, even after answering my question why designers don't often "draw" the underlying anatomy on the surface of a dress.

***

You might ask who is Emma Brooks McAllister. I think she's just a TikTok star. Here's her TikTok modeling the dress.

Makes her look blocky and masculine like a modern pick-up truck. I guess some are that into transgender.

The feminine operation is concealing that there's nothing to conceal. Suggesting is everything.

Muslims too like getting in on chic "drawing" art apparel,

Looks like she was spray painted with asymmetrical breasts and an arrow pointing down at her crotch.

Kate म्हणाले...

The dress' mistake is that it's only half-trashy. Where's the polyester representation of the good china?

rehajm म्हणाले...

Not appealing to me- the ensemble looks crudely home made which perhaps is appropriate and on point in a positive way for a TikTok celebrity?

Saint Croix म्हणाले...

I like it!

rehajm म्हणाले...

But I think there's something good about taking a very trashy idea and elevating

Up/down can be wonderfully appealing but within the ensemble- cheap dress/Harry Winston jewels, that sort of thing. Where’s the elevation here?

Tina Trent म्हणाले...

It looks like her nether region is smiling, covered with a bedsheet, and her breasts are the eyes, but otherwise it's lovely.

Like that old Saturday Night Live skit about the space aliens with their eyes on their breasts, so men are really interested in talking to them. I think I'm reminded of it every awards season.

Christopher म्हणाले...

It's rare though not really impossible for breasts to be that asymmetrical per se. But breasts take on asymmetric forms in motion, or when lying down to the left or right, or even when one arm is doing something different than the other etc. So the designer is showing us a static form that would make sense for a statue or painting but not for a body in motion.

Anyway the designer is bored with clothes, so tried something else.

TickTock म्हणाले...

Tina, you have a far more powerful imagination than I do, although I like the dress as well. Not certain of the bedsheet look, a little color might have been better so that it looked more like a sarong. But I am far from understanding how women dress. Like women themselves, who, after more than 7 decades have some basic features that I still fail to understand completely.

I like it. The illusion of a very risque dress, but actually completely modest.

One part of the anatomy. Other parts swathed in sewing room leftovers.

Good Lord that’s horrible, a Temu dress version of those horrible t-shirts you reference.

If you turn it upside down it looks like a dick and balls.

I don’t hate everything. This one I kind of hate…

tim maguire म्हणाले...

I especially like the arrow pointing to her vagina. It's like the outfit 7 of 9 wore in Star Trek Voyager--basically, she was nude.

…and certainly in the comments not everyone hates it. Why shouldn’t people be entitled to their reaction?

Anthony म्हणाले...

Meh.

Aggie म्हणाले...

I don't have a strong opinion on the dress, I think it looks fine but not remarkable, but I gotta say she doesn't look all that thrilled with it.

The semiotics of competitive women's apparel elude me. What is she communicating?

MadTownGuy म्हणाले...

Back in undergrad days, a rather large gal came walking through the Quad with a T-shirt that had a printed image of a bare chest. Of course, this was during the streaking craze, so I'm not sure she ever got a second look from anyone.

Howard म्हणाले...

It's not a drawing, it's shading.

Static Ping म्हणाले...

From my perspective, the dress is saying "I have breasts." I do not find this to be a particularly attractive or sexy way to do so. I suppose it is a look.

This is true. When I posted my comment all the responses were very negative. I do agree, of course, that everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I am no arbiter of good taste. It just feels at times like the instant knee-jerk reaction to damn near anything on the Internet is to loudly condemn and take offence. I suppose my comment was another example of this very thing...

Next up on Althouse: Sport's Illustrated's bodypaint swimsuit models.

What's up, Althouse? You hit your 20th anniversivary blogging, and suddenly its sweeps week? Or are you letting it all hang out now that the 20th year is completed? If you're going to post more T&A from TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, I won't complain. But does this post make Trump look good/bad, or help the Israelis/Gazans, or explain obscure word usage in good literature, or boost trans rights? Or is it just an odd fashion moment, a leotard with a wrap worn to an awards ceremony, akin to the swan dress of years ago?

Breezy म्हणाले...

My first thought was some sort of reptile breaking out of its shell.

Narr म्हणाले...

It's OK, and yes, she's quite pretty.

"but I gotta say -she- doesn't look all that thrilled with it."

Not looking thrilled about anything is the mode nowadays, especially for pretty young women.

n.n म्हणाले...

You can frame the feminine form, but it's not really necessary, and is often, in fact, counterproductive. Either way, your feminine female aesthetics will appeal to your audience. The question is who is intended?

Readering म्हणाले...

Dress is saying, I have the figure to carry something like this off. Which I think is how some young women become tiktok stars.

Mike of Snoqualmie म्हणाले...

That has to be custom to do it right. Costly for everyone but the wealthy-to-do.

Iman म्हणाले...

Meh… go BIG or go home.

Iman म्हणाले...

“Pretty girl, why?”

Tina Trent म्हणाले...

TicToc: I still don't understand how other women balance on high heels. Maybe I'm over-thinking it. I do wish Jordan Peterson would stop wearing that weird suit that's dark red on one side and blue on the other, with a shiny grey tie between the two lapels.

I GET the metaphor. But only British politicians can get away with male clothing that absurd.

It makes me worry about his mental state.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

At first glance the top for that dress looked like a layer of body paint. Some day, some woman will go the body pant route, but I guess not yet.

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

There were very few dresses at the Emmys this year that I didn’t like and this wasn’t one of them.

Rocco म्हणाले...

It reminds me a little bit of a DQ Blizzard with ground up oreo cookie wafers as a top.

That's not a dig; I think she pulls it off well.

The pattern around the front of the hips reminded me of the bottom from the first modern bikini: https://www.historyextra.com/period/20th-century/first-bikini-history-invented/

Joe Smith म्हणाले...

She doesn't need help with anatomy...

I have no idea who she is but looked her up...lots of yoga pants, swimsuits, workout gear, etc.

She is not unattractive and could pull off a burlap sack...

Whiskeybum म्हणाले...

I see a smiling sleepy face in the pattern. Also, it has an AI vibe to it… the neckline in particular looks Photoshopped.

Rusty म्हणाले...

Is it one of those garments where when you run your hand the other way you get a portrait of Nicholas Cage? That would be awesome!

Night Owl म्हणाले...

The graphics are awful. One of the "breasts" looks like a mastectomy scar.

That would be cool!

Now I’m imagining the dots moving around like the inkblots on Rorschach’s mask in the Watchmen.

It's the red carpet equivalent of the tuxedo tee shirt. As the Gen Z'ers would say, it's basic.

nbks म्हणाले...

What a beautiful face. Looks like what Elliot Page might have become in a sane world.

Saint Croix म्हणाले...

She's gorgeous. If this dress was on an ugly woman, my response might be quite different.

To me, "I like your dress" is a code word for "you look hot as shit, baby." And you can say "I like your dress" without getting called up to HR or making anybody mad.

Having said that, I like the damn dress. On her it looks great! And the leg wrap on her bottom half is a very nice contrast to the body art top half.

I didn't even see the big arrow pointing down to her nether regions. Nice!

I like that dress too much. I wouldn't be able to shut up about it. "Is that an arrow pointing down? Oh, I like that!" I would get reported to HR anyway. That dress would get me in trouble.

SteveWe म्हणाले...

Lovely shape from waist down. But, -- oh my! -- her thumbnails aren't symmetrical!

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

I’m assuming the dress was made by photographing her with a white top on, and then lighting her so the shadows fell to the designer’s liking. (Maybe even the shadows were created in photoshop or similar program.) Then deciding where the black and gray rhinestones (as well as some black sequins of various sizes) should be positioned. She has a white sleeveless body suit underneath. And either the body suit or the stretch sheer top material is also shaded underneath the embellishments.
I’ve seen her move in the dress and it looks just as good as when she’s standing still for photos.
Up close, the dress looks a bit like comic book graphics. It’s an incredible idea.
The designer is Do Long.
His bio: Before becoming a stylist, Do Long studied construction engineering following his family orientation. After graduating from the university for 3 years, he realized that working in the office was not his dream. Despite being a “layman” in fashion designing, with talented and creative mind, Do Long has defined his reputation in the Vietnamese fashion industry. Do Long has experienced many ups and downs on his way becoming a professional fashion designer so that by 2016, he achieved unexpected success with his own brand and has become one of the top selections by many beauties and A-list stars.
He has an instagram page at DOLONGOFFICIAL. Very interesting designs but none like this one.

Gospace म्हणाले...

Too be honest, I would have thought the appearance was due to the material, lighting direction, and her natural very feminine shape. If the secret behind its appearance wasn’t thoroughly discussed and explained here I’d have remained blissfully unaware that it was colored in.

That is, of course, if I had seen the dress at all. And appearing here, of course explanations would be forthcoming.

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

I just read my comment and it sounds as if I’ve seen her in person. No - only in videos.
