The cartoon editor of The New Yorker "invite[s] you to enjoy these delicious, butyraceous cartoons, which you all dug the most on Instagram in 2023."

I'm reading "Instagram’s Favorite New Yorker Cartoons in 2023/The gags that got the Internet laughing, and liking, the most in the past year."

Lots of cartoons at the link, apparently the ones Instagram users indicated they liked — or, as some people might say, "dug" (and "butyraceous" means like butter, by the way — but I'll just show you my favorite:

Made my day at 7:43 AM. Thanks!

It's interesting to me how many of the cartoons were drawn for women. That's different from the New Yorker my parents got in the 1960s.

I've always found NYer cartoons to be almost profoundly unfunny.

None of the ones I looked at were funny.

None of the ones I looked at were funny or even clever.

I didn't make it through all of them (I don't think) but the one characteristic they all had in common was "trying too hard".

Dig up Thurber's essay on the editing and selection of cartoons at the New Yorker. His accompanying cartoons are funnier than anything in the magazine today.

That was my favorite, too! I also liked the one with the aliens in a flying saucer passing over the heads of people walking, eyes glued to their phones. One alien says, to his concerned co-pilot, would you relax? They never look up.

My NYer sweet spot is a lot sicker than these bland millennial favorites.

Quoth the penguin, Hold my beer. No, seriously, hold it - my wings and my feet are more or less useless.

He did do the penguin next, in The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pymm, but I guess everybody knows that.

My all time favorite New Yorker cartoon is the "Dogs don't like the dog food" cartoon.

Harried advertising exec explains to his dog food manufacturer client why the ad campaign failed.

And the fact that those dogs in the voting population might just vote the Dims out of the White House next elections is because those dogs don't like the dog food that's Bidenomics.

We get the New Yorker in print every week. But I often scroll through their online page that shows all of the week's cartoons together. I am astonished at how many of the cartoons shown here are ones that I don't remember at all. I must have seen them but about half don't look familiar. I'm not sure if that's evidence of a problem with the cartoons, or with me.

“and ‘butyraceous’ means like butter, by the way…”

I misread that as ‘bootylicious’. But that would be more like jello, not butter.

What is a raven doing on a writing desk?

The Vault Dweller said...

Once upon a winter morning, in between the comments warring,
Over many a varied article of modern day lore,
While I pondered the positions coddling, suddenly there came a waddling,
As my mind an image modeling, modeling someone at the door.
“Tis a delivery man,” I muttered, “waddling at my door,
Only this and nothing more.”

I opened the door to a squawking, not from a delivery man hawking,
But to a penguin in dress galore.
Looking on the Penguin in spats, one of the Antarctic expats,
I feared my sense had flown like bats, bats out the barn door.
“Tell me, when would sense return to what is at my door?”
Quoth the Penguin, “Nevermore.”

For once I want to fully endorse Althouse's sense of humor in her "favorite" selection.

I laughed.

Best cartoon ever: Tarzan standing in a treehouse and holding a briefcase speaking to Jane; "It's a jungle out there."

Always makes me laugh but I haven't been able to find it again.

The dogs don't like Bidenomics? Dog owners will tell you that dogs will eat shit. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Biden and his economics, I'd say.

B Kliban. Bill Watterson. Gary Larsen. Charles Addams.

My adult daughter, visiting home, looked through a Kliban book she found on a bookshelf and said, "This explains so much of how I was raised by you."

I liked the one with the snake.

Let me rephrase that;

Why is a raven on a writing desk?

If you don't know, Google it. Just like that;

"Why is a raven on a writing desk?"

Without the quotes.
