Good arm. More action needs to be taken against shoplifters and thief. Stop blaming the victim - I get sick and tired of people being chastised for leaving valuables in their car, parked in their driveway in their neighborhood. You are just tempting the thief like it is your fault they are miscreants. On social media, when people criticize the victim for doing this, I point out their shame is the same as criticizing a rape victim for wearing a short skirt. Some old fashioned frontier justice would go a long way to cutting the crime rate.

Honest people work hard so that:

-Biden family corruption via Ukrainian and Chinese money laundering for their personal fortunes all ignored by US media and given a pass by FBI and corrupt Merrick DOJ.

-Shoplifting is off the charts.

-Crime is off the charts. Car theft is off the charts. Inflation is off the charts.

-Millions of Illegal border crossings allowed by Biden's corrupt abuse of the asylum system - and we are all paying billions to fund illegal entrants. (media dutifully call "migrants")

Biden will easily win re-election even tho he is a old husk-puppet and walking dumpster fire.

The bottle-thrower is expressing the disapproval by society of the lawless behavior of the cart-pusher (thief).

Ordinarily, we expect society itself, through its law enforcement mechanisms, to express that disapproval for us. Everyone's happy to have someone else do it for them, because policing is a messy job. But if society refuses to carry out that role, individuals will step into it, with mixed results.

But we shouldn't blame the vigilantes. That's human nature, against which we establish societal institutions to make vigilantism unnecessary. Take away those institutions, and this is what you have left. One of the jobs of the police is to protect the criminals from the law-abiding, but to do that, they have to enforce the law against the criminals.

Context matters. Was the thief also voicing threats, as many do here in CA during their crime sprees, in order to intimidate witnesses? The two go hand in hand: organized crime and witness intimidation. The argument that insurance will reimburse the theft losses is bogus. Just think of how high the premiums will become if the store ssstains multiple losses. THAT could put a serious dent into the store's profitability. At some point it's not worth doing business in that neighborhood.

They come in, build a store with funds from overseas (funds no one else in the area has access to because America sucks) and then they just take shit out of the area without giving anything back. No jobs, no appreciation, no nothing.

"Their own kind!" Look, Crack, these are mostly family businesses. A Korean immigrant family generally does, yes, consist mainly of Korean-Americans. (Just as most carnecerias are owned by Hispanic immigrant families, our local Indian grocer in Salem is staffed entirely by Punjabis, &c.) And those "funds" from "overseas" must be really impressive, to enable them to set up dingy little hole-in-the-wall shops in South Central. But you say it's all take and no give, huh?

What do you want, Crack? Jobs? Well, I hear that South Central has an awful lot of Blacks in it. Perhaps some of them might start hiring "their own kind," yes? But then working long hours in a tiny grocery store isn't really glamorous enough for Thug Life anyway, is it? There are certainly opportunities for work, even in the "ghetto."

Appreciation? How about: I give you this food, you give me some cash for it. That is how retail generally works. I have been in Korean-owned grocery stores. The staff are generally friendly, though not loquacious; English is pretty limited. But the only reason they are in business at all is that someone wants to give them money for food. Only you would prefer to have both the food and the money. Lovely, innit?

Much of the theft is not insured by insurance companies. At least anymore. It’s often called “shrinkage” and is a cost of doing business. The sad reality is that too much theft, and the businesses shut down. Esp noticeable are the big chains, like Target, Walgreens, etc. They are shutting down their stores in the violent inner cities. The result is that these communities are turning into food and (legal) drug deserts. Worse, they tend to have a low incidence of private vehicles, and taxi companies, Uber, and Lyft are refusing to service those areas.

Currently living by the Strip in Las Vegas is interesting. On the west side, the closer you are to the Strip, the more is locked up. At one Walmart recently, they had Chap Sticks locked up. Go out west as far as Summerlin, and it’s almost normal in the stores. But we had lunch Sunday with my partner’s sister, who lives, with their 90+ year old mother, on the east side. That’s where all the homeless are camped (they aren’t tolerated by the big casinos near the Strip). Same house, for over 40 years, from when it was a nice neighborhood. Of course, we can still get most of what we want the next day through Amazon Prime. But we have really tight security (PDJT spent Sat night here last weekend - we were in the crowd watching him eat a late lunch in the DJT restaurant here, and she said he gave her a thumbs up for her logo jacket. Right).

So much to unpack here...those 'funds from overseas' are most likely from relatives. If you don't have relatives willing to loan you money you could go to a bank if you have a good business plan and good credit. And don't tell me, 'but banks, black people...' Any bank in the US that discriminates in loans would be crucified.

They don't 'give anything back'? How about they provide a way for you to buy Ding Dongs at midnight. Is that not providing a service? Don't shop at their stores if you don't like it. Open one of your own.

Survival and life are competitive sports. Make good decisions, provide a service people want, and you'll most likely do well in life.

And once more, if I could choose to be black or white in today's world I would choose black every time. The government, along with every single institution, is putting time and money into enabling the success of blacks and minorities. If you're a smart black person, you will be a superstar in business. These days, if you're a white guy, you're pretty much everyone's last choice. The white guys that do well today are exceptionally smart and/or start their own businesses.

Years ago when arresting shoplifters was part of my job, the law was that merchants could detain a shoplifter until the police arrived. It was one of a very few exceptions where an officer could arrest someone for a misdemeanor that he/she did not personally witness.

If the shoplifter resisted detention, and attempted to flee with merchandise, the charge became a felony, robbery, as it was theft by force, even if all they stole was a six pack.

Now of course the local police will likely arrest the store clerk and give the thief a ride back to his tent.

Bruce Hayden,

"Shrinkage" (or just "shrink") has been around at least for decades. It basically means expected return minus actual, and depending on the situation can be quite high. When I worked at Borders in Emeryville (that shows you how long ago this was), shrink in our store was very high. We attributed this to (1) three different exits from the building, one right into a food court with a movie theater at one end; and (2) the Amtrak station right across the railroad tracks, which brought in a lot of people eager to browse (and/or pilfer), but not to buy. The food court exit was near the CD end of the store -- yes, people still bought CDs in them thar days -- and people kept complaining that the pop and esp. rap CDs were "keepered" (i.e., enclosed in theft-deterring plastic devices that would set of the alarm if you tried to exit with it), and the classical stock was not. I wanted to say, well, there are two different populations looking at these two different sets of bins, and one of them is a helluva lot more likely to take the five-finger discount, if-you-know-what-I-mean-and-I-think-you-do. But that . . . wouldn't be prudent.

The Crack Emcee,

Oh, I think there are many Black entrepreneurs in South Central willing to hire people just to "stand on the street." Men and women alike, albeit in slightly different roles. Don't you?

If the Korean-Americans in South Central (and other places, of course) are drawing on "overseas" resources, it is strange that their places of business are so very small and pathetic-looking. Not too pathetic-looking to steal from, natch; that's what you call "giving back to the community," amirite? As for other immigrant groups, like people from Mexico and Central and South America, the money is all flowing the other way, of course. But that also is evil. Remissions to people "back home" are wrong, and so are "retro-remissions" from anonymous rich relatives overseas, who carefully give their American cousins just enough money to scrape by, at least when their stores aren't being firebombed. Apparently the only fair way to handle things is for LA to fence itself off from the outside world, so that no money enters or leaves. Hey, works for me.

Once a fast food place is established- and the equipment and loans paid off- it's minting money. Maintenance costs are small compared to paying off that initial investment.

A fast food company, with both franchise owners and company run stores, opened a few stores in black neighborhoods in the NY metropolitan area. Franchise stores. And set the owners up. Hand picked them for demonstrated ability to actually run a store by working as managers in company stores.

The areas were, of course, fast food deserts. No entrepreneur looking at risk/reward probabilities would risk their own money opening a franchise. The stores opened up, and were doing far better then predicted sales numbers. And the same thing happened with all of the stores. After showing these big numbers- corporate started getting phone calls from vendors. Store # whatever was overdue paying it's bills. "Oh, just a hiccup, I'll take care of it." when the fully finances owner was called. After a few months of escalating issues, down went the corporate troubleshooters to assist. After calling, of course, to set a visit up. And they went down to find a shuttered store. The owner missing. And investigation revealed missing with 3-4 months of receipts. With the withholding taxes for the employees not paid, and other questionable stuff. A few years down the road, training others, and these owners would have the loans all paid off, with people trained to run the place while they took long vacations with the money coming in. Instead, they all went for a short term gain and a criminal record when -or if- caught. A few months of receipts is a lot of money- but if you don't know how to manage it, it's not keep you going the rest of your life money.

So tell me Crack Emcee, why isn't Oprah funding small businesses in black neighborhoods? Or the Obamas? Or any other successful black? There's black money out there. But blacks with money aren't investing to open a black owned business in the black community. Why not?

Koreans are. And- as is usual for any FAMILY business, sticking with their own in hiring. Major companies can't do that. A small business can. Doesn't matter if it's Asian of any sort, Puerto Ricans, Italians, Russians, whatever. Growing up in suburban NJ the best local pizza came from a place where the cooks often spoke only Italian, and the rest of the employees Italian as either a first or second language. All either related or hired from a family friend's family.

What you really want to know, and what I really want to know, is why YOU don't know - and why I do know - what black people do? And then, why aren't white people as well known for doing such things? Why is your reputation mainly for being evil - by comparison? (While saying crazy shit like this?) Maybe, because we know we started with nothing - because of you - and we STILL DO IT. While you figure out new ways to arrogantly position yourself as not a part of America, like an old Southern sheriff.

How hard white people can try to lean on a group of people that you know, and are watching, still emerging from slavery is amazing to me.
