What a joke the House Republicans are, the tyranny of the 8 leave them rudderless and with 40ish days to elect someone.

Who then immediately must go negotiate with the Democratic Senate and Democratic President to avoid having a shutdown be laid entirely at the feet of the GOP.

A lot of hopeful Democratic House challengers are waiting with bated breath.

Troy Nehls has nominated Trump for speaker. If God is kind this would happen just for the photo ops of his return to the chamber alone. Legit, if you ever saw the scene in Scanners where the dude's head blows up, you'd never get a more real life chance of seeing it happen, potentially more than once, and all on film.

I’m concerned about the chaos in the House, but right now I think Gaetz has the principled position. If your Speaker is selling you out, vote him out. Let’s see what happens from here!

I like it. Fuck the Washington Generals Republicans. Democrats are going to blame the GOP for all the problems Democrats create anyways so might as well try to find a bit of Republican backbone. I’m not optimistic but we’ll see…

JRoberts: "Who needs Jamaal Bowman to f-up House proceedings when you have Matt Gaetz and his “Gang of Seven”?"

There appears to be quite a few people who were pleased with the trajectory of the coming GOPe sellout to the dems on the inevitable "At-The-Last-Minute" "OMG-There-Is-No-Time-To-Actually-Read-The-Bill-Just-Vote-For-It-Already!" Omnibus Budget "deal"(actually a total Dem win and precisely what McCarthy promised would not happen) and are now upset that train has been either delayed or derailed.

Dont worry pal. As we speak the GOPe-ers are huddling with the dems to conjure a way to stick a knife in the back of the republican base voters and.

Again.

After which Team Uniparty (Dem-Globetrotters and GOPe-Generals) will celebrate another win.

Its guaranteed.

You're probably doing the right thing if Matt Gaetz is against you — the man is the worst of an impressively bad bunch.

In some ways this is an amazing outcome. The simple fact there is a vote to remove a Speaker is highly unusual. In other ways, this seems like the most obvious and likely outcome. GOP House Speakers have had a very difficult time preserving their jobs and sanity in the Tea Party era (see John Boehner and Paul Ryan). McCarthy's margins were even narrower than Boehner's and Ryan's and the GOP has shifted even further to the right in the Trump-era.

It looked like the GOP was staring into the abyss as a political formation in 2008 after getting creamed in two election cycles. Maybe the reckoning has finally arrived

Did my daughter's front brakes today. Showed her husband how to do it- let him do most of the work under instruction. About 3 hours from start to finish.

Did my wife's brakes last week- 2019 Hyundai Ioniq. Kudos to Hyundai for sticking with brake calipers that be pushed back in with a large C-Clamp rather then screwed back in with that stupid cube tool. That's impossible to hold flat the entire time you're trying to get the caliper back in. About 2 hours.

My brakes were done a week earlier by a local mechanic while the car was in his shop to replace a worn bearing. 115,000 miles, first brake replacement. The bill was $200 less then Monro wanted to charge 2 years ago for just a brake job.

All 5 of my children know how to do their own brakes- my daughter doesn't like to do them... Now that they're adults, their friends are actually surprised to find they do their own brakes. $150 for the good pads and rotors and 2-3 hours in the driveway vs. over $750 from a chain repair shop. For their low end pads and rotors.

Never done a drum brake. I understand they're more difficult.

The nice thing about doing the brakes yourself- you know they were done correctly.

Also cleaned out the boiler and replaced the oil nozzle in the last few weeks. Boiler is over 50 years old- cast iron sectional by Buderus. Says "Made in West Germany" on it- that's how old it is. Tunes to the same efficiency it did when I first did it 25 years ago. Always will. Someday I'll need a new burner assembly- but the boiler itself is good for another 50 or more years. High efficiency boilers don't last that long. And after the first few years they're no longer high efficiency- they tune to same efficiency as older non-high efficiency boilers. Everything needs to be in new condition to maintain high efficiency. Not like new- new. This is the real world, new condition doesn't last.

I don't know if what happened today was a good thing or a bad thing. And neither does anybody else.

However - having worked in legislative politics (for the Speaker in a state House more than 25 years ago) - I know who'd be my enemy after today's vote. It would be the people who voted to oust my boss.

But.

That vote never came up. And it wasn't like we had a unified caucus or didn't have to work with a D Senate and D governor ... because we did.

That vote never came up because he worked with all factions of the caucus. And he never, ever allowed anything to come to the floor without knowing if the votes were or weren't there. And if there was a threat from either the conservative or liberal flank, it was worked out in caucus.

Today was a failure of leadership.

This didn't happen overnight. One could trace it back to H.W. Bush. Or Bob Dole. Or W. Bush. Most definitely McCain and Romney.

At some point, the base got tired of being kicked in the teeth by the people who demanded we vote for the 'most electable' and not someone who'd actually represent our interests once in office. And then when one of 'ours' got into office, they not only didn't return the favor but actively worked against him.

We'll see how this turns out, but I guarantee you those eight Republicans weren't alone in their disdain for McCarthy. They were the only ones with enough guts to publicly say, "Enough."

Josephbleau म्हणाले...

If the Republicans gain the presidency and at least one chamber of congress, it may be good. I don’t think the current move advances that objective. But we all can be wrong. I will not vote democrat, but I may be less likely to vote r depending on how this egowar plays.

It would be kinda funny if they just said "fuck it" and didn't have a Speaker for a while.

Not sure if they have a dress code in the House

I'd definitely wear shorts until they settle this shit.

By the way, Althouse, sometimes we wear shorts because we might be on the way to a basketball game!

only took me 20 years to think up that excuse

Trump should be Speaker!

I would totally vote for Donald Trump for Speaker.

He would enjoy it so much.

Would the Republicans unite to back him?

Yes!

Would the Democrats be appalled?

Yes!

It would be glorious.

Trump indeed could be made Speaker of the House...the Speaker does not need to be a member of the House.

I came here to suggest either Thomas Sowell or Condoleezza Rice.

Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) announced late Tuesday he will file paperwork to nominate former President Trump to be the next Speaker of the House.

That won't work because the Former Guy wouldn't have time for watching Fox, drinking Diet Coke, attending political rallies, running fraudulent fundraisers, and sitting in three courtrooms where he is being tried to determine fraud damages, E. Jean Carroll's $10 million defamation II damages go to court this year, and RICO charges in Fulton County begin this month. The hammer will soon drop when Jack Smith schedules Federal charges in DC and Fort Pierce courts. Manhattan Prosecutor Alvin Bragg's hush money case has already been given a trial date next Spring.

Trump has never worked a full day in his life so long work days in the Capitol are out of the question. Of course, the GOP-run House has accomplished close-to-nothing so we can expect even less from Dummy Donald.

A Republican Conference rule precludes persons under indictment for serious felonies from being part of leadership. I suppose they could vote to change the rule, which seems kind of harsh.

You can spot the lie by the duping language, the exaggeration- not just felonies, ‘serious’ felonies….

…which is not to say the rule doesn’t permit certain felonies of a future Speaker- that certainly sounds like a rule a former House invented but given the source and the context I’m embracing the power of AND..

I don't suppose it's possible that the Republicans in the House could find someone who the the Freedom Caucus would support, who might also have the support of the "moderate" Republicans and even "moderate" Democrats? Perhaps someone who could agree on actual single item budget bills and keep that promise? Maybe make a deal?

Or does this just work one way--vote to spend more money or you are a traitor?

I'm old enough to remember the vitriol spilled against Joe Manchin for refusing to support the $3.5 Trillion "Build Back Better" bill. They eventually made a deal.

By the way, is it now the problem that they are running out of money from that one, and need more? When does it stop?

Good on you! Self sufficientcy is a good thing. Especially teaching your children.
" Never done a drum brake. I understand they're more difficult."
Not really. It's just more tedious. Another set of special tools etc. New parts go on in the reverse order you took off the old parts. Drums are more expensive than rotors and a lot of places don't resurface them now a days.
Just replaced the catlytic converter on my Element. 213000 miles.
