"Hawaii’s governor announced on Friday that the list of people missing from the Lahaina fire had been whittled down to just 66 names..."
"... down from 385. The new number is a vast relief to officials who at one point feared that hundreds of people would never be accounted for.
In the first days after the fire, the missing list swelled to close to 3,000.... The official death toll remains at 115, a figure that hasn’t budged in more than two weeks...."

do they want to tell us where the missing were found? or just crossed off the list? as mistaken entry items?
Suspicious Cat enters the conversation.
Are the Hawaiians so incompetent that they can't tell the difference between 3,000 and a hundred or so?
Oh, wait...
They are lying as usual.
"Just 66 names..."
385 would have been a "burden".
What I want to know is where are the radio calls from the police officers ordered to block people from leaving so that they were burned alive informing the government functionaries of the increasing danger? Or did the police just remain quiet as it became apparent that the people they were stopping were going to die and the "danger" out of sight down the road wasn't apparent?
According to this list - there are almost 400 people still missing

It is almost as if it might take time for people to find out they are considered unaccounted for, and those people might take some more time to inform those officials keeping such records that they are indeed still alive. Perhaps there was something more important these missing people were busy with, such as reorganizing their daily lives to overcome the difficulties imposed by the disaster? Could the NY Times ask any of them about it, or is that too much reporting to expect these days?
Just 66?
That’s good news?
If the guy who didn’t blow the siren and the guy who delayed the water release aren’t charged with criminal negligence, then something is seriously wrong.
That math doesn't work out.
Future Hawai'i population will be chipped upon birth or other arrival in the islands, to enable an accurate and geolocated tally at any time.
I’m curious is there are any police or fire that died in the line of duty?
Brush fires can be mitigated and extinguished. We know how to do that. But that would take an honest and competent government. So Dem ruled places where all money is used for stealing ( like high speed trains and climate control) and the high paying bureaucratic jobs are political rewards are for sure going to burn.
Obviously, there are missing people. It does take time, however, to figure out how few you can get away with missing without making it clear to everyone (even Democrats, possibly) that you're full of shit and are just making things up.
So it looks like 115 confirmed dead and 66 missing and presumed dead. That’s a lower number than I expected from looking at the photos of the burned out cars.
How would we know if the authorities are lying? I hope there's a simple, sensible answer to this question. Obviously, we can't simply take their word for it, not anymore. And the press isn't going to be any help.
I hate what has been done to our formerly high-trust society. Don't you?
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
~Amen~
Was there ever any official explanation for why police blocked people from leaving the burning area? What possible (valid) reason could there be for such an action?
"No longer missing" could mean "confirmed dead."
I trust nothing the Democratic Party of Hawaii tells us, at this point.
The Times article is behind a paywall, but there are plenty of other news sources reporting the same thing. However when I try to discover why they were able to clear a net of 319 names* off the list I see a lot of what looks like “trust us.” Well, the people who trusted the authorities as the fire raced towards Lahaina died. So that’s gotta be a nonstarter.
_________
* I write “net” because one article implied that 322 names were removed but 3 new ones added.
Only 115 dead. Well, no biggie then. None of them were named George Floyd.
Also barely more than the death toll from the Great Biden Kitchen Fire.
Time to move on.

Sadly, that was my first thought.
"How would we know if the authorities are lying?"
To cover their asses? The safe bet is that they're lying.
Suppose people on the missing list were lost in the fire, but nobody is asking about them. Will the authorities include them in the "presumed dead" count or just forget about them?
