"No one can stop candidates from entering this race, but candidates with no path to victory must have the discipline to get out."

"Anyone polling in the low single digits by this winter needs to have the courage to hang it up and head home. Too many other candidates who have entered this race are simply running to be Trump’s vice president. That’s not leadership; that’s weakness. Too many candidates are afraid to confront Trump, surrendering to his attacks. I will have more credibility speaking out against Trump as a non-candidate to help move the conversation toward the future I believe the Republican Party should embrace."

Writes the Governor of New Hampshire, Chris Sununu, in "I’m not running for president in 2024. Beating Trump is more important" (WaPo).

The future of the Republican Party, he believes, is to stress "limited government, individual responsibility and personal freedoms."

That the GOP only fights for one of the three is why Trump does so well, and he really only fights for 2 of the 3, but after the governmental abuse of Trump, he might just start really fighting for limited government.

I think Trump has already mentioned that Tim Scott might be his next veep.

(He would be an amazing veep).

I think it's a 2-man race, and regardless of what the polls say, Trump has already indicated that he's attacking the Florida governor.

That's what he did back in 2016, too!

I don't know if Rand Paul will ever run again.

But I think he would be an amazing Supreme Court Justice.

You don't need to be a lawyer to sit on the Supreme Court.

Just like you don't need to be a lawyer to sit in the Senate.

I think having only lawyers on the Court skews it. I'm an ex-lawyer, but I strongly support the idea of putting Rand Paul on the Court. Even if he's ignorant on a lot of things, and will depend on his clerks more than most, I think he's a remarkable Senator and would be a fantastic Supreme Court Justice.

So I hope Rand Paul does not run in 2024. But I hope our next Republican president would consider putting that brilliant mind in the unelected branch. He definitely deserves some kind of elevation from where he is. I would expect him to grow into a Republican version of Hugo Black.

(I remain embarrassed that I failed to back Rand Paul in the 2016 Republican primary -- pure ignorance on my part).

Fine. I agree. But it's not enough. Let's add: stand up to China, close the border, appoint the right judges, and fight the prog culture war. And let's be specific: limited government means eliminating climate change subsidies. Individual responsibility and personal freedom mean opposing climate change mandates.

So what has Chris Sununu done to advance those priorities in his home state? Butkus. If Gov. Sununu was a Republican worthy of the label he'd say beating the Democrats totally everywhere is more important than Donald Trump.

The GOP's heir apparent is Donald Trump. By mouthing off to the vile and mendacious Washington Post, Gov. Sununu has sawn through the limb he sits on like a Warner Bros. cartoon villain. Oh, well... it's perversely reassuring that nuts indeed do not fall far from the tree. I expect Gov. Sununu to remind us all of his inherited rapier-like political acumen by getting a haircut.

More virtuous than thou is the theme of the Republican race, except for Trump who is a humorist.

The deep state fears a humorist who gets in the news.

And Trump's numbers go up.

Hey Sununu, extend your right forearm. Make a fist, palm down. Extend your thumb. Extend your index finger. Raise the back of your hand to your forehead. Look in the mirror.
There you have it.

The GOP has failed to support any of those things over the past two decades. Their entire plan is simply to present themselves as somehow the "responsible" managers of the bureaucratic superstate every time the Dems overreach and hope that the suburban white voters fall for it. Well, it's not 2004, and that plan doesn't work.

Sounds good to me. Pretty basic liberal (libertarian) elevator pitch.

I've been hearing similar thing from REPOS since nixon 1960 campaign.

Have we had any president in the past 95 years who has acted as if they actually believe it?

Other than President Trump, I mean.

Sununu is just a liberal Democrat who likes tax cuts and business friendly policies. There's no reason anyone should listen to him. He's been Governor of tiny NH for 8 years, winning for the most part, modest victories. He's refused twice to run for Senate, because he'd lose.

The MSM ALWAYS finds these liberal/moderate Republicans to trash the conservative/MAGA ones. That's why this guy and Chris Christie and Hogan are always on TV or in the news. But they have ZERO following with the base, and couldn't get 5 percent if they ran for POTUS.

And Nikki Haley, Hutchinson, and CHristie are NOT running to be trump's VP. they doing it for publicity, or as a resume enhancer, or because Trump might get thrown in jail by Biden's Corrupt Leftwing AG Merrick Garland.

Then like Trump he must believe there's no need to reduce the entitlement spending (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid) that's been causing the deficits that have caused the national debt explosion.

Yes, the Republicans have passed over a lot of potential non-Trumps in the past, but what about the future?

Trump won in 2016 for A REASON. (Yes, part of the reason was that he was running against the most unappeallng candidate in history -- and he lost to a phantom in 2020).

In 2024 people are looking for a new President. Trump isn't NEW anymore. Thank you for your service.

Dave Begley said...

The future of the Republican Party is to totally crush the Dems so bad that they will know they are beaten and they'll stop pushing their insane ideas. With this trans business on kids, all reasonable people should be able to see that the Dems are insane. But why do they keep on winning?

But it will never happen. The Dems will hold federal power forever unless the GOP can win in 2024.

The Dems have rigged the elections and the GOP has been impotent in response. That's on Trump and the RNC. They should have known that was coming once covid hit in 2020. And then the Dems bragged to Molly Ball at Time how they rigged the election.

The lower spending and lower taxes issues are way too limited and way too old.

The thing of it is, after the 2024 election the Dems will have over 10m illegal aliens in this country and they will all illegally vote Dem. That was the end game for the Dems and Biden. Losing the 2020 election was critical.

We are totally fucked if we don't win in 2024. I'm not optimistic at all. Trump can't win the swing states.

I can't say that I know a lot about Governor Ununu, as I don't live in the Northeast. In the interviews of him which I have heard, he sounds like a sensible guy who might have had sonething to contribute to the 2024 GOP Presidential primary. I see a lot of comments about needing a GOP candidate who will "crush the Dems". So far, so good. If that is your goal, you need to have a candidate who can win. Since being elected in 2016 by drawing an inside flush, Trump hasn't won an election since then. The man's idea of good governance is to create chaos 24/7. Sure, that was fun to watch for a while, but that style wore thin, and he knows no other way. Making poor appointments (SCOTUS excepted), or running off quality cabinet members is no way to govern. Say what you will about Sununu, but the dude has won 4 gubernatorial elections (NH has 2-year terms). The GOP needs a candidate who can win. By my estimation, I think all of the announced GOP candidates could beat Biden. Trump commands a fanatical base of GOP voters who would vote for him no matter what he does or says. The independent vote went against him in 2020, and is not changing its mind. If a candidate cannot expand his/her vote beyond a hard-core base, he loses. Every time. Time to move on.

Yancey Ward said...

Sununu isn't wrong in one respect- the wider the field is, the harder it will be to defeat Trump in the primaries- every other candidate is anti-Trump vote. Also, the Republican primaries, at least in 2016 were largely winner take all, so it that is still the case, Trump is in a better position.

It would have been easy for "the GOP" to take out Trump....by truly representing the interests of the republican base voters.

But that's never going to happen, is it?

Thus, your GOPe team sucks up to the dems and establishment to "take out" the republican base and any politician that dares to truly represent them.

Not to worry. The 8 year corrupted Dem/GOPe lawfare effort to remove Trump prior to 2024 will probably be successful.

Are you kidding?

Half the elected republicans in DC and almost all of the DC republican leaders are actially aligned with the dems on policy.

Often they dont bother hiding it.

The idea that they would "fight" passionately against the dems is laughable.

The best they will offer is another Failure Theater event or two for fundraising purposes.

Substitute any democrat party member and they say the exact same thing. What a coincidence. As other commenters have noted, Sununu has done absolutely nothing as governor of his state to advance Limited Government, Personal Responsibility, or Individual Freedom. Just like his worthless father, this deceitful hog is going to spend decades in government getting rich, getting fat, and doing things that make Americans' lives worse.

Drago said...

Chris Sununu is the David French of Liz Cheneys.

Except worse.

He actually went on the View and agreed with that idiot Sonny Hostin that republicans should completely surrender on the culture battles.

I would be hard pressed to come up with a more perfect representation of the typical GOPe "leader".

He is clearly angling for a spot on Morning Joe or CNN.

Mason G said...

Drago said...

With Sununu dropping out of the race and the GOPe-ers panicking over the apparent failure of their "home state" strategy (getting candidates to declare from key early/home states to draw support away from Trump and allow another candidate, like DeSantis, to step in with a plurality), the GOPe and their dem allies have no other choice now but to move forward with the indictment strategy against Trump.

Sununu would have been blown completely out of the water in his own home state had he pushed ahead.

FYI, Haley's failure to catch fire (yes, I know, laughable) is why Tim Scott jumped into the race and DeSantis still trails Trump in Florida by double digits.

Joni Ernst is doing what she can for Team GOPe in Iowa but its not enough either and she is not dumb enough to declare herself, though I would bet some heavy donors spent time trying to convince her to toss her hat in the ring.

boatbuilder said...

New Hampshire has gone from being a very rural state in which the electorate consisted of farmers and mill workers, to a Boston exurb. Sununu has correctly sensed the political winds and tacked accordingly.

He would do the same in DC. Not that there was ever any danger of him getting elected.
