That wasn't Russia. It was the Soviet Union, which had an interestingly strong Ukrainian elements throughout its leadership caste. Krushchev was raised in Ukraine.

In any case, if "horrible things" were the standard for US involvement in foreign wars, we'd be involved in conflicts all over the world. Levin also seems to accept the Domino theory -- if Ukraine falls, so will Poland, Romania, the Baltic States etc. This seems ridiculous, since they are NATO members, so an attack on any of them would result in a war with all of NATO. And Russia is having trouble with just Ukraine.
