"What do you stand for?"

Another photo from my trip to lower Manhattan, from which I returned 3 days ago. It's been cold, snowy, and overcast here in Madison, but I expect to get back to my sunrise routine soon.

The question is ambiguous.

It could mean what are your foundational principles — what values do you represent.

But could mean what are you putting up with.

Remember NPR? remember back when NPR Pretended to be non commercial?
I guess, those days are long gone.
https://www.ntd.com/npr-cuts-roughly-10-percent-of-workforce-amid-darkened-financial-outlook_903469.html

The National Public Radio (NPR) is cutting roughly 10 percent of its current workforce as the network’s financial outlook recently “darkened considerably” amid declining advertising revenue, NPR’s executive officer announced..

I actually Listened to NPR yesterday, on my way home from Shiloh, Tenn.
Here's what i heard them say: (as best as i can paraphrase)
"white people Aren't just terrified of Black rebellion.. white people are TERRIFIED of Black Success"

At that point i tuned it off and went back to WSM (650 AM). Just in time to hear Merle Haggard sing:
Turn me loose, set me free, somewhere in the middle of Montana.
And gimme all I got comin' to me, And keep your retirement and your so called social security.
Big City turn me loose and set me free.

I thought the contrast was interesting

So far about 42" of snow here a mile high in the San Bernardino mts. Still snowing heavy. Even down the mountain it's been snowing, in parts of LA and other places at about 1500'. Snow is in places it hasn't been for about a hundred years

The weather forecast for Snoqualmie is 4" of snow tonight plus another 5" over the next 3 days. Sunday and Monday are grocery days plus tire repair day at Costco and Tuesday I'm getting together with a friend who lives both here and on Maui. I bet he wishes he's back on Maui now.

I turned off the camera in my iphone-7 after it turned on in my pocket and ran the battery to zero. Since then the battery has been holding charge unusually well, in addition to not running down in my pocket. I use a sony pocket camera for camera work. It has an actual button so you can take pictures without seeing the screen, too.

I need the iphone to work with non-contact veterinarians. Also good for emergency hotspot when home DSL goes down.

I'm old. I prefer to remain seated....."Racism is an illness. Are you sick." This reminds of when they used to classify homosexuality as a mental illness....Everybody is a prejudiced. That's how our brains work. You tense up in the presence of The Other. MAGA hats, guys in heels and push up bras, different chokes for different folks.... Just now, a certain group of people is trying to define another group of people as mentally ill and/or evil if they look cross eyed at yet another group of people. My desperate plea for tolerance is that we should be accepting of those people who are intolerant but who, for the most part, live and let live provided you stay away from their children. Also, I'd give Scott Adams a break.

Let me tell you a little story. I do genealogical research about my family on Ancestry. The other day, I got a Find A Grave hint about one of my 4-great-grandfathers, Asa Houghton, who was born in Vermont and died in Ohio. Well, not only was there a picture of the grave site, but also a lengthy obituary and a reference to a genealogical history of the Houghton family going back to Lancaster, Massachusetts, where Ralph Houghton was one of the town's founders in 1653. He was born in Lancaster, Lancashire, England in 1623 and had come to Massachusetts sometime a few years before the founding of the namesake town. The town was destroyed by an Indian attack during King Philip's War in 1675, and the surviving colonists fled back to the Boston area, but in 1685, Ralph and his son James built the Ralph Houghton Garrison House in the town of Harvard, which was once part of Lancaster.

Now here's where the story gets weird. In 1981, after Army Basic Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, I went to Fort Devens, Massachusetts for Advanced Individual Training at the Intelligence School there. In 1985, I returned to Fort Devens for an add-on course on the way to West Berlin. Fort Devens is located just west of the town of Ayer. Ayer is just to the northeast of Harvard, where my ancestors had built the house three hundred years earlier, and I had no idea. I looked on my map app and poked in the address for the Fort Devens Museum, which is on the same quad where my old barracks was, and the house in Harvard. The route diverts around a nature preserve, with a total distance of 9.5 miles. As the crow flies, it probably less than five miles. That close.

Now I have to go back to New England, not just to see that house, but also to see various other ancestral places in the other New England states. It was certainly interesting to find and read the book online, which had been published in 1912 by John Wesley Houghton, a son of Asa by his second marriage. My ancestor George W. Houghton was the son of Asa by his first marriage. To hear J.W. Houghton tell it, pretty much all of his relatives were of sterling character, although I guess it might have been awkward to say of living relatives at the time that they weren't the salt of the earth.

According to our own CIA, Joe Biden has driven China to consider arming Russia. The west can’t sanction China in any way that doesn’t pale in the context of a war over Taiwan, which the US is pushing. We won’t give Ukraine ATACMS, probably because we can’t spare them in light of the war the neocons are planning with China.

After getting a look at what modern industrial war actually looks like, no country wants to deplete their own stockpiles to defend Kiev’s right to impose the Ukrainian language on Donbas and Crimea, or its revenge fantasies on Russia. The war is all over but the killing and dying, and it’s time to recognize this fact.

Remember that none of this had to happen. It’s a neocon wet dream, and Joe Biden is a tool of the neocons.

Jaq म्हणाले...

Both side’s nuclear arsenals have probably served to restrict the war to Ukrainian territory, BTW.

University of North Carolina moves to ban ‘diversity, equity and inclusion’ statements in anti-woke backlash

It's going to be interesting to see how that affects their incoming class. Will students decide that their own work may have a better chance at being graded on merit rather than adherence to D.E.I. principles, and thus decide in UNC's favor. Will such a decision sway 1L law students to select UNC rather than Notre Dame, UGA, Georgetown, or Univ. of Alabama? Or, will it sway them to decide against UNC rather than others. I'm going to check later this year and see how their incoming class ranks in regard to LSAT and GPA scores.

I suspect the backlash from faculty will be harsh since the faculty is already upset because the Chapel Hill Trustees have already voted to start a School of Civic Life and Leadership. A new academic unit featuring for-credit courses on history, literature, political science, and more. According to the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, the school will provide a space for UNC students to “explore American civic values with the full freedom of expression, intellectual diversity, and open inquiry that such studies require.” How dare they!!???

I think that war with China over Taiwan is a stupid idea, and yet...

https://www.yahoo.com/news/us-general-predicts-country-war-134622647.html

We have abandoned "strategic ambiguity" on Taiwan, and made it clear that we would fight to defend Taiwan in the case of any military threat by mainland China. Biden has said this out loud, even though the generals tried to walk it back, you know Biden is most likely just repeating what he hears in his briefings that he is supposed to shut up about. The major argument inside the Pentagon over Ukraine, per some observers who seem to me to make a lot of sense, is that we are depleting our arsenal and destroying the military credibility of any US defense of Taiwan.

In any event, China surely has a basis to believe that the US is planning a military operation against it, and China surely accepts, as do almost all countries outside the western propaganda bubble, that the US instigated this war in Ukraine, and that the US is just as likely to instigate a war over Taiwan, as it has instigated so many wars I the past, and the US likely wants to do so before China becomes so strong that winning will be impossible. It may be too late for that one. Especially after this pointless Ukrainian debacle.

Whether you believe China is right or not, Biden's big mouth and crappy diplomacy has driven China and Russia into each other's arms; that can't be denied. Throw in Iran, which can shut down the Straits of Hormuz, even if it takes punishing blows by the US, and it's quite a hornets' nest that Biden is leading us into.

"...China surely accepts, as do almost all countries outside the western propaganda bubble, that the US instigated this war in Ukraine..."

Un, no. This is not a war but a "special military operation" in which Russia assembled a 250K troops on Ukraine's Eastern border and then invaded. Almost all "countries" not named Vermont observed this, so the term "accepted" is not germane.

So Tim, now that Russia's little misadventure in Ukraine has turned into a tar baby for them, you are now segueing to supporting China in a confrontation with your own country? Are there nothing but Nazis in Tiawan, too? Or is it that the US is full of nothing but Nazis? Don't you think it's time you shelved your own propaganda campaign? Here's a hint: you are not convincing anyone.

n.n म्हणाले...

"...China surely accepts, as do almost all countries outside the western propaganda bubble, that the US instigated this war in Ukraine..."

A violent coup, essential services denied, services provided by a force already legally present, a vote for help from a neighbor, eight years of conflict, US aid for a progressive condition, another region another request, a military/para-military axis assault and torture of the people, an apartheid regime in Kiev, an American vice/president visits to cover up his trail of lust and abortion with "benefits"... a Slavic Spring in the World War Spring series and legacy.
