Goodbye to Gina Lollobrigida.

I loved the 1956 "Hunchback of Notre Dame":

Here's the NYT obituary:

Ms. Lollobrigida was often outspoken in interviews. In 1969 she suggested that women pretended to be stupid in front of men. She claimed to have no beauty secrets and to do no exercise other than dancing, and to have no objections to being seen as a sex object and being told that she had a beautiful body. “Why should I be offended?” she said in a 1995 interview with The New York Times. “It’s not an insult.”

Ms. Lollobrigida was 95.

Women are sex objects. Men are sex objects. It is Her choice. I agree with her, except for a need to maintain a pretense of stupid... look elsewhere. That said, intelligence, rationality, feminine beauty and envy. RIP

Sorry to hear of her passing. I am old enough to remember with pleasure her performances.

However, whenever I came across her name, I always remembed something which I believe was on Rocky and Bulwinkle. The scene is a canal boat in Venice, and there is one of those slightly curved pedestrian bridges over the canal. On the bridge was a sign which said "Danger Lollobrigida."

"It's not an insult."

Thank you. That says it all!!

Easy for her to say, huh?

Now we get to enjoy Amy Schumer and Lena Dunham.

Loved her in "Beat the Devil". Amazing that she was more or less the same age as marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly. Life isn't fair is it?

Reminds me of The Flintstones.

Summary: At Wilma's insistence, Fred hires an Italian maid, Gina Lolabrickida, to do the cooking and cleaning, but problems arise when she quits on the night Wilma has promised her to Betty, and Fred brings home Mr. Slate for an authentic Italian dinner.

To dismiss a compliment as an insidious anti-woman insult, you have to pretend to read minds.

Hopefully, when the AI comes, women won't have to pretend anymore.

Her name makes a dramatic entrance as it trips off the tongue. There's no puberty blockers that could suppress such a name. It's kind of a super power to look like that, but the moment is so damn fleeting. Anyway she found some useful and interesting things to do when she was no longer super gorgeous and she lived to 95. Rory above lists some other gorgeous women of her era who are still around. Perhaps being gorgeous is a marker for longevity if you avoid drugs and fast cars.

@Tregonsee

There was also a Lollabrickida spoof character in an episode of the Flintstones

Exactly sixty years ago, The Flintstones "Wilma the Maid" episode portrayed the Italian maid Lollobrickida as obese. [Original airdate January 11, 1963 (ABC)]

https://www.b98.tv/video/wilma-the-maid/

So, Wilma changes tactic by crying loudly enough for Fred to relent and agree to hire a maid, though finding the necessary money to pay her salary will be difficult without an increase in earnings from Slate at the rock quarry.

The maid is a lively Italian named Lollobrickida, who cooks a delectable menu. Unbeknown to Fred, Lollobrickida cannot abide bad singing, and after Fred's bombastic morning aria ("Oh, Lollobrickida, your food I diggeda!") in the bathroom shower, she broaches the topic of dish-shattering and ear-hurting song to Fred, but he forestalls her complaint with a promise to serenade her day and night in appreciation for her cooking, then swiftly departs home to go to his job.

Lollobrickida could not work for Fred under such torturous conditions and, while Wilma is visiting Betty, quits her Flintstone maid position. She leaves a chiseled note to this effect for Wilma to read, then walks off of the Flintstone premises... Upon learning of Lollobrickida's resignation, Wilma offers to substitute for her as food provider for the Rubbles and Vanderocks and at home prepares spaghetti and brontosaurus meatballs.

She appeared in a cameo on the Flintstones as Gina Lollobrickida.

Tregonsee, close - it’s was a Looney Tunes cartoon and the gag was

DUCK-A YOUR HEAD-A
LOLLABRIDGIDA

She was one of the first players picked for my Fantasy Sex League.

Wow! We know now the cause of the cathedral fire.

I’m sorry of her passing. She was more feminist than the feminists.

I remember the cartoon bits too. Cartoons and Christmas movies immortalize, don’t they…

rehajm বলেছেন...

I want to live in that movie. The outfits rock, plus smokin hot…

Lem Vibe Bandit বলেছেন...

On the other hand, when she said, “Why should I be offended?” she wasn't talking about women in general.

“I knew right away that Rock Hudson was gay, when he did not fall in love with me.”

Hot women have the best gaydar, no question.

Wince বলেছেন...

Evidently, Gina Lollobrigida did not do the cameo voice on The Flintstones unlike...

"Cary Granite" (Cary Grant), "Stony Curtis" (Tony Curtis), "Ed Sulleyrock/Sulleystone" (Ed Sullivan), "Rock Pile/Quarry/Hudstone" (Rock Hudson) and "Ann-Margrock" (Ann-Margret) all had cameos.

The Lollobrickida voice was done by Bea Benaderet, who also did Betty Rubble.

I wonder if she refused an offer to do the cameo, or whether it had anything to do with the Lollobrickida character being an obese stereotype?

gspencer বলেছেন...

Big tits on a reasonably trimmed body are always welcomed.

Iman বলেছেন...

She was known as Gina Lollohominahomina in our home, thank you.

Sebastian বলেছেন...

"when she said, “Why should I be offended?” she wasn't talking about women in general"

Correct. Theory: the compliment, and the awareness that the Ginas of the world get them, stirred envy in the female status order, which caused a demand for equality, i.e., to even out women's status hierarchy based on looks. The horror of the male gaze was not its maleness but its production of feminine distinction, as Pierre Bourdieu didn't say.

Favorite movie at our house: Come September with Rock Hudson, Sandra Dee, and Bobby Darrin. Great movie. She was wonderful. Never saw that version of Hunchback. Amazon put it as a rental on Prime Video so that will be tonight’s movie. Beat the Devil is free on Prime Video. Maybe we’ll watch both. Come September is unfortunately not available except as a dvd.

rcocean বলেছেন...

“I knew right away that Rock Hudson was gay, when he did not fall in love with me.”

Beat the Devil:

Jennifer Jones: Harry, we must beware of these men. They are desperate characters.
Harry Chelm: What makes you say that ?
Jones: Not one of them looked at my legs!

Temujin বলেছেন...

They don't make women like that anymore. If I can say that. I hope my wife is not reading Althouse these days.

We see the effects of moderation writ large, well, okay writ trivial on this thread.

Hey, she was in the Flintstones everybody!

Estoy_Listo বলেছেন...

Among everything else, she also hosted a TV ad for Maidenform bra: "And now for the moment of figure truth." (Or did I dream it?) To this day I announce my anticipated outcomes with those very words.

Quaestor বলেছেন...

GL as Esmeralda, the Romani girl, does not seem to impress those sex-obsessed Persians quite enough to drive Hugo's plot. I can hear the director chiding his extras, "No drooling!"

gpm বলেছেন...

Don't remember that version of Hunchback. Mostly the 39 version with Maureen O'Hara and Charles Laughton.

What I probably remember Gina most from is Come September. Fun but somewhat silly movie. Then maybe Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell. Ditto. Not Sophia, but absolutely gorgeous.

RIP

Too bad about Jane Fonda.

Boring dance.

michaele বলেছেন...

Since I was reading the posts from the top and scrolling down, I came across the one about the falling Chinese birth rate first. Upon seeing this dance scene expressing such a celebration of voluptuousness and implied youthful fertility, I couldn't help but think, "What man wouldn't want to procreate with that?" Which, then, of course, made me look up whether Gina Lollobrigida had had any children. Hmmm, just one...a son.

Lovely lady, sexy woman, no fear of her female sex nor contempt for her feminine gender. I pity... envy the fool who shared a life with her. That said, there are a lot, perhaps many, all, lovely ladies, sexy women, who harbor neither fear nor contempt, and equally reconciled men to share their lives. That said, a lovely lady, sexy woman, intelligent person, has passed. RIP
