It’s too bad Twitter ceased to exist several weeks ago when those layoffs happened and everyone shifted to Mastodon; I used to like posting there.
— Matthew Yglesias (@mattyglesias) December 5, 2022
He's writing in a place he asserts doesn't exist.
He's also writing badly: "... everyone shifted to Mastodon; I used to like posting there." Don't write it like that unless "there" means Mastodon. You're writing one damned sentence and I have to do the editing work in my head.
You know, if he'd given a link, I'd have checked out his writing on Mastodon. I even tried googling his name and Mastodon, and I couldn't find it. I found the — a? — Mastodon site and searched for his name and got 4 links. I clicked on all 4 and found no content.
Somehow "everyone" is there, but I see no one.
UPDATE: Commenters are telling me it's sarcasm. I don't know why I wasn't more attuned to the kudzu of the internet.

The Mastodon has no clothes!
Snowflakes are having trouble coping with reality. He (Matthew Yglesias) lost his safe place.
Nobody has been laid off yet. A large group was advised in November that they will be laid off in February.
Until then they continue to be legally Twitter employees with full pay and benefits. They've been told to stay away til then. Some layoff.
Another group voluntarily resigned in return for a severance package.
Another group were never Twitter employees. They worked for contractors who were canceled. It is unclear how many were laid off by the contractor . None were laid off by Twitter.
You are posting fake news, Ann. Perhaps on good faith, which makes it misinformation.
Yglesias knows better. He is posting disinformation.
John Henry
Reminds me of John Cage's 4'33".
You are reading too much into his mockery / mimicry of the social media posts claiming that Mastodon was smashing Twitter as soon as Musk took over. That was also impossible, and also communicated poorly by the anti-Musk crowd. But "all the advertisers were leaving" and Twitter was going to declare bankruptcy or shut down very soon.
"Impossible."
Seems like sarcastic take on early, possibly overwrought, predictions of collapse of twitter, with migration to new platforms, post closing.
Nobody goes there. It's too crowded.
Is this not obvious sarcasm?
Somehow "everyone" is there, but I see no one.
Haha…The opposite of “No one goes there anymore, it’s too crowded.” Nobody goes to Mastodon yet, it’s not crowded.
i'm pretty sure, he means;
He used to like Mastodon; but it's SO CROWDED there, that he has to go to twiter to hear himself think.
Right? I mean, that guy WRITES for a living; he MUST BE (at least) barely literate..
Right?
"You are reading too much into his mockery / mimicry of the social media posts claiming that Mastodon was smashing Twitter as soon as Musk took over..."
Too much or too little?
At this point, I'm not sure what he means.
Is he praising Twitter and mocking the people who believed they could move en masse to Mastodon?
You're saying I had an interpretation that I didn't have until you seemed to accuse me of having it.
Sarcasm is the low-value currency of the internet.
It’s sarcasm
Jam tomorrow and jam yesterday, but never jam today.
Bleh. Sorry I wasted my/your time on sarcasm. He was being an asshole to people I don't pay much attention to. The flounce-offs after the flounce off.
*I* have ex-commenters like that. To me, when they're gone, they're gone. There will be others. Or not. Life goes on.
Maybe he meant the Twitter employees moved to Mastodon and they just haven't finished writing code yet in between trips to the red wine on tap. That's the way I read the first sentence in that the Twitter employees had moved to Mastodon. Clearly wrong, but again another example of poor writing. "I shot an elephant in my pajamas"
One more example of competent writers (in Yglesias' case I assume, in Taibbi's case I know) succumbing to the quick, toxic possibilities of twitter. It's so easy to misunderstand or mischaracterize a tweet.
Yeah the sarcasm interpretation at least makes sense. Too bad though because that headline was brilliant.
I think it’s sarcasm. People won’t leave Twitter for Mastadon for the same reason they didn’t leave it for Parler. The audience is on Twitter. I don’t think Musk will be able to change that so quickly.
I find that improper grammar and confused word flow adds to the sarcasm by snagging persnickety prose Nazis and supercilious ninnies. That's in Chapter 3 of my new book "How to Troll Trumpers for Fun and Profit" available exclusively on Amazon Prime. Act now with the password TRE45ON to get special deals on future products.
Ha. This guy thinks his words spread like kudzu. He's more like poison oak.
"Somehow 'everyone' is there, but I see no one."
Almost a Yogi-ism.
Yglesias often writes serious (to him) articles that could easily be interpreted by others as sarcasm, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that this was a serious post.
"Yeah the sarcasm interpretation at least makes sense. Too bad though because that headline was brilliant..."
Thanks. Too bad I wasted my brilliance on being stupid.
Ya know if David "Iowahawk" Burge had posted that folks would be chuckling and thinking "oh, another witty Iowahawk observation" but Matt's not really known for internet humor, except perhaps unintentionally.
Mattie… ever the Journolist.
Yeah, if you have a reputation for sincerity, you can't easily do the world's easiest form of humor — saying the opposite of what you really think.
Libtards should create a “watering hole” site where like-minded denizens could gather to bitch n’ moan. Call it “Donkeyshines”.
It's still badly written even for sarcasm.
Yglesias goes more for quantity than quality.
Somehow "everyone" is there, but I see no one.
It's too crowded. Nobody goes there any more.
These Juicebox Mafia writers have always been under the delusion they were funny. Sarcasm is not funny and not meant to be. Sarcasm is intended to wound. Example: “That dress looks (cough cough) great!” They are pretending to write satire by ironic juxtaposition but it is not funny. So at this point it gets labeled incorrectly as “sarcasm” as a last attempt to make sense for the reader. Sorry Matty, it’s just very poorly executed satire.
Iowahawk does not serve up lame takes. His wit is much more refined. Gotta disagree with Will here.
I recently saw Alyssa Milanos Tweet about her trading im her Tesla. Yes, she tweeted this.
Reminds me of people on facebook griping about big corporations. Had to leave FB.
It makes sense to me that I vote the opposite.
Alyssa now drives the peoples car. I wonder if she knows?
You’re not alone, Prof. Althouse. Sarcasm is often misunderstood on the internet.
The meat is in the pudding: ceased to exist.

They did but they call it Journa.host
I was accepted then booted without ever posting a toot. I complained and was asked to submit a resume with examples of bylined articles. I did and now I am in. I am officially one of the Kool Kidz!!
I can't talk about what goes on in the Sooper Sekrit clubhousebut I can say it is not much. And what there is isn't all that exciting.

He quite rightly mocking the Libtards that were (1) proclaiming Twitter was doomed and (2) leaving Twitter RIGHT NOW, because musk was a fascistnazi.
People should be assholes to these dumbshits. They are constantly saying "I'm leaving the USA, I can't stand TRump" or "I'm leaving Twitter, I hate Musk"
And then DONT LEAVE. And don't apologize for not leaving.
If you're playing that game, everything you say is meaningless Bullshit. Mr. Drama Queen.
I'm not certain what the purpose of replacing Twitter with Journa.host is.
It is supposed to be a replacement. I see journos encouraging other journos to get off of Twitter. But if they get off Twitter and join a system that is basically an echo chamber by design, how does that benefit journalism?
John Henry
I don't know why I wasn't more attuned to the kudzu of the internet.
Well, obviously you haven't been to mastodon.com, home of the Mastodon Forestry Mulchers!
A massive, elephant like mammal, having long, curved tusks and cusp-shaped teeth, well-suited for chewing trees and shrubs (and kudzu, too!).
This is like the mall that everyone goes to on one side of the highway and the "Dead Mall" where nothing is happening on the other side. Progressives want to make Twitter the Dead Mall, but so far Mastodon looks like the Dead Mall. It was like that with conservatives and Gab, Parler, Truth Social. Locals and Rumble are in the mix somewhere and didn't catch on either. The lesson from today's retail world is that all the real world malls may become dead malls soon enough. Twitter, Mastodon, and the rest: someday the bell will toll for thee.
The man was born a fucking leftist hack, is a leftist hack, and will die an ignominious death as a leftist fucking hack.
True no matter where it is posted...
I'm a little surprised that no one brought up the philosopher Yogi Berra, who said "Nobody goes there any more. It's too crowded."
I'm a little surprised that no one brought up philosopher Yogi Berra who said, "No one goes there anymore. It's too crowded."
I was surprised at this little bit of snark from Yglesias. Also people who proclaim they are leaving Twitter and then don't is a far more embarrassing version of saying you are moving to Canada if an election doesn't go the way you had hoped. Actually picking up and moving to a new country is a pretty big investment, but no longer using Twitter requires so little follow though.
"the world's easiest form of humor — saying the opposite of what you really think."
And here I thought I was special when somebody (on another network) said I was sardonic.
Of course, there is the snark of pretending to not notice sarcasm. So which is it, Althouse- a legitimate case of not figuring out, or pretending to not have?
I wonder if Lefty Mark skips right past this post.
With a name like Yglesias, I would have never guessed he's Kudzu. Maybe on mom's side.
Oh..more from the Kudzu:

The thing about Twitter’s suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story in fall 2020 is that it was covered on television and in newspapers and so I’m not really convinced that Twitter’s decision made a big difference.

Did you really miss the sarcasm? Or are you being sarcastic now?
"I'm a little surprised that no one brought up the philosopher Yogi Berra, who said "Nobody goes there any more. It's too crowded.""
7th comment.
Of course, despite the polls showing the story would have chhanged votes, the Kudzo may be right, what with Gadfly plugging a toilet so bad it disrupted "counting" in multiple swing states.
“ I'm a little surprised that no one brought up philosopher Yogi Berra who said, "No one goes there anymore. It's too crowded."”
Maybe because they remember the recent post that went into that saying in depth.
The audience is on Twitter. I don’t think Musk will be able to change that so quickly."
What would make you think Musk would want that?
Matthew Zglesias. What did you expect? Penetrating insight?
"He's also writing badly: "... everyone shifted to Mastodon; I used to like posting there." Don't write it like that unless "there" means Mastodon."
I don't know- I didn't find it confusing. Although Mastodon was mentioned, I thought it was clear "there" meant Twitter, which is the subject of the comment.
Yes, someway or other, it was ironic.
Checking out Journo.host (2.5k users) on Mastodon. It gives you a pretty clear look at what some people are thinking about politics, along with some cute animal, interesting science, and incomprehensible tech posts. There's also an activist current, that doesn't stop at doxxing. Many of the posters seem to be nobodies like us, so maybe the real new journo.list for the real journo.elite is somewhere else on the web.
Funny--folks here see underlying observation made that they agree with and they still insult the person making it. Tribes.

I never said if he wants that or not, so what are you talking about?
"so maybe the real new journo.list for the real journo.elite is somewhere else on the web."
If you're looking for them, you can save a few minutes and skip the New York Times and Washington Post websites.
What….no kudzu tag?
