I'm on record not being able to detect sarcasm in Matt Yglesias, so I'll just give you this plain:

I detect more bitterness than sarcasm.

Give it a rest, JuiceBox Journolist.

He might just be on-the-level here. I'll take him at his word

I think it is an attempt at sarcasm, but he is wrong about the war on the phrase itself, and the holiday. What it basically amounts to is some sour grapes for Yglesias.

Iman - I'm stealing that.

Peace on Earth, goodwill to all. Especially the grumps.

How fittingly acerbic, good one.

Perhaps observing the spirit of the season, Yglesias allows himself one positive comment about the other side.

Maybe this is a forgotten tradition. And if it isn't forgotten, because it never existed, how about we start it.

I'll go first. Biden's increased deficit spending ensures the next economic depression arrives earlier than expected. Early arrival is always better than late arrival.

I am on record not being able to detect sentience in Matt Zglesias. But there may be a glimmer here.

Libs like the receiving gifts part.

it ends there

Liberal/leftist are quite clever (unlike conservatives) because they know what the market will bear. They know - right now - that the war on Christmas is unpopular, so they respond to anyone talking about it with snark and "Ho, ho, there is no war on Christmas".

However, once they get strong enough, they will change their tune and start overtly celebrating the war on Christmas. And if they ever get strong enough, they will get rid of the Christmas Holiday by calling it "unconstitutional".

Matt is just lying, but then he's a leftist, so I'm just repeating myself.

BTW, Matt is an out and out proud Jew, who called Micky Kaus a "Bad Jew" and a "Traitor" for opposing Amnesty and open borders. So, he's not against religion, just religions he doesn't like.

I agree with Yancey, it's not sarcasm. I don't agree, however, on the sour grapes aspect. I think it's genuine regret on Yglesias' part, but more about adopting a wasteful strategy than being remorseful for driving a political wedge between people.

lane ranger বলেছেন...

For the left, even Christmas provides an opportunity to try to dunk on your political opponents, sorry, I mean enemies. Even pointing that out seems unChristian, so I'll stop, and hope that Matt finds some joy in 2023 that is not limited to some kind of schadenfreude.

The war on climate continues. The climate is winning.

My experience: I have routinely wished people a Merry Christmas when the circumstance warranted. All creeds, colors, countries. Never had anyone react negatively to the least iota.

And once in a while I'll unthinkingly say Happy Holidays to people ... but that sounds OK too.

Rollo বলেছেন...

Of course he's being snarkastic.

"Which was definitely a real thing" only gets said snarkastically.

I think it's nice when people take a break from pressuring you not to say "Merry Christmas!" to spend a few moments denying that they ever pressured you too not say "Merry Christmas!"

It's really very thoughtful of them.

"Yglesias's father Rafael Yglesias is a screenwriter and novelist, and he has a brother named Nicolas. His paternal grandparents were novelists Jose Yglesias and Helen Yglesias (née Bassine). His paternal grandfather was of Cuban and Spanish Galician descent, and his three other grandparents were of Eastern European Jewish descent.[5]" Wikipedia

Why not come out of closet and be a loud and proud anti-semite?

It is odd how 45 managed to make himself one of the first associations that comes to mind for many when they hear Merry Christmas, just because he was so idiotic in thinking it was a real issue, let alone that he affected usage. Me, growing up abroad, it's the contrast with Happy Christmas that usually pops into my head. But here Happy New Year so often paired that Happy Christmas does not work.

It is odd how much Trump is in your head, Readering.
You and Yglesias.

"I note that at this point even the libs have surrendered in the War on Christmas, which was definitely a real thing."

It's meant to be sarcasm, but it's actually lying by telling the truth unconvincingly. If Matt had only left out the, "definitely" it would have been a simple, non-sarcastic, statement of the truth.

I did like Julio Iglesias, he always claimed to be Jewish from the waist up. Iglesias or Yglesias means churches in Spanish.

Odd how much readering is in you head boatbuilder.
