"I think these [social media] sites bring happiness to a lot of people. Some people even discover love there. I think it’s a wonderful thing."

Said Bob Dylan, making me imagine that Bob read that New York Times article about Meade and me.

He says: "These sites can bring pleasure and infinite joy to millions. It’s like opening a window that’s been shut forever, and letting the light in. It’s fantastic if you’re a sociable person; the communication lines are wide open. A lot of incredible things you can do on these forums. You can refashion anything, blot out memories and change history. It’s boundless. But they can divide and separate us, as well. Turn people against each other."

When I read the NYT article about you and Meade I thought that Nora Ephron would option it for a movie. But the arc was all wrong for a Hollywood movie. You would have needed to be a staunch conservator blogger, like an Ann Coulter, and Meade should have been a liberal who, through the power of love, would have shown you the error of your ways.

"... option it for a movie..."

There was some talk of that, but how do you option the NYT writer's article when it's based on posts that I wrote and it's about my life (and Meade's). I think if I'd been eager to have that happen and asked for *nothing*, it might have happened. There was a specific actress named. What a clusterfuck that would have been!

I should write a screenplay — in the style of "The Orchid Thief" — about those layers of storytelling and the clusterfuck of my own vanity around seeing [insert name of famous actress] playing me.

Writing a screenplay is much harder than it looks and selling it is 100x harder.

Margot Robbie will play Ann Althouse right after her smash performance as Margaret Frankenstein.

I mean if you want to go full vanity:

You had one eye in the mirror, as you watched (Cate Blanchett as) yourself gavotte

Don't be a tease. This is now ancient history and no one can be harmed be revealing the name. My money is on Meryl Streep.

Here's how Hollywood would tell your story:

She's a strong, sassy, law professor. He's a strong, silent maintenance man. They battle each other online, until they meet in person. And fall in love.

Can these two crazy kids stay together and find happiness?

Hollywood would move the story from Madison to LA, SF, or NYC. Meade will have a funny/likable black friend who warns him against getting involved with a High-falutin' law perfesser. Althouse will be surrounded by snooty elitiests who warn her against getting involved with a mere Maintenace man.

But she will confess her lonlieness to her best friend. Who will also be black. Or maybe Hispanic. Plus: Wacky gay neighbor!

your screenplay would probably be more of an art film. Too bad harvey weinstein isn't around to produce it. Seems he/s indisposed at the moment.

In the "Orchid Thief" format, the NYT writer becomes the main character…

Rcocean concocts a conventional narrative, but oddly enough the true story is closer to the reverse. And my OT style script would mix it up much more and contain multiple fantasies.

Ann:

If you're going to write a script (and I think you should) you need software. Final Draft is the standard but I used Celtex.

And read "Save the Cat" by the late Blake Snyder; Georgetown alum.

rcocean has some good ideas.

I'm thinking it would have been the ideal comeback vehicle for Meg Ryan, but it was not to be.....Most college professors have romances that are scripted by Bergman and sometime go the full Strindberg. Just the fact that yours is a romantic comedy puts you miles ahead of your peer group....I'm looking for a Marvel angle. Perhaps Meade could have some kind of superpower as the result of an explosion in a commercial plant fertilizer factory. That way there could be a part for both Billy Crystal and Liam Hemsworth. Some further details need to be ironed out.

I swear she's destined for the screen--
Closest thing to Michele Pfeiffer that I've ever seen
